As someone who has experienced groinkicks more than once, im very interested in the reason to why this (referred) pain comes with such a delay. Same goes for kicks/punches in the liver. You have 'plenty' of time to realise that you're entering a world of pain, even though the impact has already happened.
Don't quote me on this, as I have no sources. But my hypothesis is a combination of a few things, first of which adrenaline released because of the intense shock your body received. Giving you those precious few seconds to try and make your escape. Second is the intense pain from these sensitive regions probably overwhelms your pain center for a little while because of the amount of signals going to it, making the pain not register for a little while.
I might cautiously point out that there is a certain neurological "speed limit" anyways... Then of course, there's going to be some degree of the body's natural defense mechanics at work... It would seem (at least in some manner) that to be reduced nye instantaneously to a blubbering ball of useless flesh by a single blow isn't exactly the most survivable of reactions. Maybe the nerve related defenses simply can't ever stack up to avoid it, but that's not going to stop the baser instinct (or whatever you call it) from trying. :o)
the pain is not the impact itself, it is more like the damage report after impact. as stated above and i can confirm that it happens not only with groin-kick-pain (i had an accident which resulted in a major cut on my forearm, yet i was not feeling any pain, not until i saw the blood leak on the floor and only then my nerves kicked me with the pain) there is also the adrenaline rush that gives you the extra seconds/minutes to fight/escape.

I used to work at a equestrian centre and they used to hold show jumping competitions. At one such event a horse was very polite and let his rider go first over the 6 foot jump. Out riding my 125cc bike in my early teens in the local forest i find my fav steep hill with a ramp at the bottom. Being the dumbarse i was a "watch this" moment came. I remember when my high school health teacher made and analogy between periods and being kicked in a groin. Basically he asked how often it happened to boys and then asked them to imagine that pain returning every month. The whole female section of the class slowly clapped for him. The reason it hurts so much is to teach us from as young as possible to protect the area. We have evolved for them to be in the optimum place to do the most optimum job as possible. I used to work at a equestrian centre and they used to hold show jumping competitions. At one such event a horse was very polite and let his rider go first over the 6 foot jump. The male rider landed astride the top pole and where he had landed on it squarely it didn't get knocked off the pole rests and stayed there. The whole arena went quiet as the poor rider fell off to one side holding onto the part of his anatomy which had cushioned his pelvis from the impact. I think it depends on what kind of phlegm it is. If you get phlegm from smoking then I might not be good to swallow it but if you're getting it from being sick then it might be good? Oh my god, I'm a female and because of falling at a weird angle a couple times when I was a kid, my groin actually got hit by playground equipment. (I was a weird kid, I was all over the place) and yeah... needless to say, it hurt a ton. That makes me even happier I'm not a guy, if I felt really bad pain from those falls and I'm a woman... Out riding my 125cc bike in my early teens in the local forest i find my fav steep hill with a ramp at the bottom. Being the dumbarse i was a "watch this" moment came. Motor like hell to the bottom, jump off the bike into the tree branches, catch the branch and watch the bike land in the bushes unscathed. Done it many times before, what could go wrong.
I set off like a slapped arse aiming for this ramp then hit a rock which throw me off the bike totally wrong which then, as revenge for being rough on her, kicks me square in the nuts with the back wheel. (I still cant work out how.)
It felt like i had just given birth. I end up laying on the floor in the bushes writhing in agony for what felt like hours while a friend looked on laughing. Its true, EVERYWHERE hurts. Not from the crash, that didn't hurt at all but the whack in the stones was life changing. Its amazing how far spreading that kind of pain is. But it takes a few seconds. Starts at the source and climbs up your spine then all hell breaks lose while all your internal organs feel like something is ripping them out.
So i go home and need a piss. Open my fly to see a puddle of blood on my shorts. Take a piss and its red. Like 50% blood. Yeah, can you imagine that as a teenager. I go to the hospital and after loads of poking and prodding, scans, x-rays and piss test's, About 9 different people had a fondle, the doc walks in and says "well you wont be pissing as high up the walls as you used to" Then goes on to explain that i hit my nuts with so much force that i ruptured one of the connecting tubes and that every thing will be fine, but as he said "give it a week then crack one out to make sure all is well"

I remember when my high school health teacher made and analogy between periods and being kicked in a groin. Basically he asked how often it happened to boys and then asked them to imagine that pain returning every month. The whole female section of the class slowly clapped for him.

The reason it hurts so much is to teach us from as young as possible to protect the area. We have evolved for them to be in the optimum place to do the most optimum job as possible. They are quite delicate and need to be treated as such, the "Pain" is a very useful thing mother nature has given us as a reminder to go easy on them.
