Gretzky is great because he had longevity and skill.
Lemieux is magnificent because to my eye test, nobody has come close to his skill, but didn't have the longevity.
Size, wheels hands and smarts. What a beast. And he could do it alone with guys hanging off his back. Most talented player to ever lace em up in my opinion

Wayne Gretzky broke every single record known to man. Mario is my favorite player and that's why I'm here watching this video, but let the argument go. Gretzky absolutely rewrote history, and Mario didn't break a single one of his records. You cannot sit here and say that longevity is the main contributing factor when Gretzky not only holds all single-season records, he has a higher PPG average throughout his career than Mario. To say Gretzky didn't come close to the skill of Mario is blasphemy. It's hyperbole for talking heads on a radio show.

    • @patrice5976

@@PalpitoMcCray Gretzky recently told that Mario was better than him, according to him Mario would have better numbers with a team as good as Oilers was and for sure without all the injuries and his cancer. In my opinion Gretzky was better to run the game according to his plan, was better without the puck (I mean anticipation to be at the good spot), his hockey QI was better and he was playing switch on all the time. Mario was not playing switch on all the time, I guess his body condition was not allowing to push at max all the time. In my opinion Mario was better for puck control, this guy was able to move on even if one or two opponent were holding him back, he was a beast with crazy good hands, on this aspect of the play he was so better than Gretzky. It is almost impossible to do a direct comparison, they are two great players and we have to respect this.

It was the only time I saw him play live and was amazed that with all of the other very talented players on both sides, including many futur HOFs, he stood out as head and shoulders above the rest. Every shift he did things that made you shake your head. He can never be considered the greatest due to injury and illness that robbed him of too much of his career, but Mario at 100% is the peak performer in the history of the NHL for me.

4:48 - I was at that game. Mario had announced his (first) retirement and everyone knew the Pens were going to lose the series to the Flyers. So we all knew it was Mario's last home game. As time began to wind down, the crowd began chanting, "Mario, Mario, Mario." Then he picked up that puck and headed in alone. When he scored I thought the roof was going to blow off of the Igloo. Most exciting moment in sports I've ever witnessed.

The single greatest player I've ever seen. When he was in his prime, there was nothing he couldn't do. Speed, finesse, stickhandling, shot selection, he had everything. His ability to bait a goalie and able to hang on to the last microsecond and beat them where the were not. His accuracy was seond to none. On a breakaway, forget it, might as well just put it on the scoreboard.
I've never seen anyone as siky smooth as him. Thereve been some greats, Gretzky, Yzerman, Fedorov, Jarr, Hull, Howe, Sakic, Forsberg, Lindros, Selanne, Bure, and so many more but in their prime, he was better than all. Crazy thing is even in his prime, he wasn't healthy and played through severe back issues. How great could he have been without chronic pain?

To this day, there has never been a player that has matched Lemieux's pure talent. His skating was flawless/perpetually 'poetic' on the ice, his stride was unmatchable, his stick reach was one of a kind, his goals were a thing of pure beauty, his shot was perfect. To me, Lemieux is the best pure, naturally talented goal-scorer in NHL history. Others have & will score more (ie. Gretzky, Jagr, Ovi) But no one will ever do it as effortlessly, beautifully, and perfectly as Mario did. He made opposing defenders look silly & hung goalies 'out to dry' multiple times per game and basically every time he touched the puck.

When I was in 3rd grade my mom picked me up at school one day and said "Guess what? We're driving to Detroit tonight and tomorrow night we're going to the Red Wings game!" They were playing the Penguins and we were staying in the same hotel that they were. Before the game, the Penguins were heading from the hotel to their bus to go to the Joe and my mom let me stand over by the bus to get a peek at the players. I was really the only fan around waiting for them. I was a chubby little kid wearing my favorite Red Wings jacket and one by one they passed me by and filed into the bus. I was saying stuff like "good luck" and "have a good game" and other things my hockey coaches had taught me good sportsmen say. Some smiled or said "thanks kid," but most of them just kind of blew past me seeing as how I was obviously a fan of the team they were about to face. Lemieux was the last one to exit the hotel and before he got on the bus he took the time to kneel down and ask me if I was going to the game and if I was excited. It's one of my favorite childhood memories. The Wings won that game but I was rooting for Mario the whole game, too. The guy is a legend and a good dude, too.

Really nice video compilation. MARIO LEMIEUX, practically lights out on a breakaway. Some of the greatest hands hockey has ever seen. Also his ability to anticipate, and how he was always laser focused on the puck(especially when he's getting attacked by hopeless D Men!). Long strides gave him that deceptive speed. And his reach also gave him another tool in the arsenal. The shorthanded goal vs Boston in '92 highlighted just about everything he could do.

8:48 - Mario scores off the faceoff. If you watch it, as he's celebrating he looks up to the press box. The reason he did that is because he had a standing bet with Mark Madden, a Pittsburgh sports radio talk show host, that he would score off a faceoff. Madden paid up on the bet, giving $6,600 to the Mario Lemieux Foundation.

Gretzky was too much of a risk to go out of position and check because it would clear up more space for him, and defencemen of that time had a very hard time hitting him to begin with. I just found your channel and your videos are awesome. The only thing I could see that would make them better is putting some info on the screen about some of the highlights like Game 7 winners, milestones, etc.. Old people like me who grew up around this era know Mario's story but the casual fan or some of the younger people might not know about him getting sick, then having his jersey unretired. It would definitely add to the video to include some of that like you did with the announcers reading his achievements. Also, I don't anything about editing software and it might not be possible, but if you can adjust the contrast/brightness for the really old clips to take some of the white it would look even better even though it might be a little dark. I can't imagine how many hours go into one video, thanks for making them.
