Yes, I learned several things that were new to me.
I see a parallel here to the American historical practice of having a separate gunbelt with attached holster whose movement is independent of the belt that holds your pants up. There is no comparable issue with extra weapons or avoiding injury in a fall of course, it is that a gunbelt can adjust for being seated in a saddle on a horse, walking, sitting in a chair or other postural changes.
Honestly, I had not thought about this before even though I instinctively knew it.

AMAZING HISTORY AND MARTIAL ARTS VIDEO!!! This made me think of the gun belts that developed in the mid 1800s in the American west. Originally, smaller guns were carried in holsters on the "pants belt" and LATER, the "gun belt" became its own item. It was worm BELOW the pants belt and the holster was often strung from the bottom edge of the wider gun belt (the Mexican loop or Buscadero style) which allowed easier drawing of longer and larger guns. They were made so that the gun could "ride" in the thigh close to the natural and relaxed position of the hand. This was also of benefit to riding on horses and just sitting down for a whiskey. The later addition of the "ammo feed" loops allowed for carrying of extra ammo. You could also hang a bowie knife from it as an extra weapon or tool.

I love these small details in Kobudo ryuahs - so many of them are lost in modern budo.

I like how you said there are no strict rules about tying it and how whatever works is best, this makes more sense for a battle situation to me as while regimented procedures work for sports and discipline, it can often hinder the individual combatant and thus serves little purpose on a battlefield where individual combat may occur.
So informative. It's nice to learn the historical reasons, which are usually very practical and not matters of style.

I have to compliment Seki Sensei's presentation/teaching style, it's very clear and easy to follow even for first-time viewers. There's no ambiguity in the motions or on the explanations.

Hello Shogo-San and Seki Sensei, Thanks so very much for this instruction on the Obi. I feel 100 times more confident to wear and practice drawing and sheathing my katana sword now. Seki Sensei reminds me a lot of my foil/saber fencing master. Which is to say it seems there's a lot that can be learned and plenty of fun to be had in so doing. He's similarly dignified but the enthusiasm just can't help but shine on through in the teaching of the art.

Same in viking re-enactment fighting. I use separate belts for pretty much all items I'm carrying. Makes tying everything snug much easier.

This makes sense actually. Today we wear a belt to hold up our pants, but then soldiers and those in the shooting/tactical community have a larger battle belt. Interestingly, I did experiments with mine and you can put a katana/tachi on it in such a way that resembles the way samurai held theirs.

I do have a question: Does Kobudo include strategies for battlefields or war too?
It pleases me to know there are still schools out there teaching combat forms instead of only kata or showy, wasteful movements.
"All used outer obi"... that is highly doubtful.
Maybe it is true for Asayama Ichden ryu" but there is enough documentation available saying it depends on the school and the time period.
@@jaketheasianguy3307 Musashi lived in the Edo era which was rather peaceful. Dress-codes were very different through out Japanese history (feel free researching other pictures as well). Different schools had different preferences and clothing. You could if you want take a look at drawings made during the Sengoku-jidai. There is loads of material out there.
"Samurai" rarely lived in the actual cities as the risk of trouble that came with it was way to high. Rules differed from domain to domain and had much to do with the rank of said samurai.
I feel like I would not be locked using the inner obi as I use large sayabiki quite often from the inner obi, but I can definitely see that this would be more free, and I wish we could use it in the ryuha that I train in.

I've been wondering about this since I saw Seki Sensei's first video. Also, I'm pretty skinny and boney so when I wear the katana under the inner obi, doing saya biki causes the saya to grind against my hip bone (ouch!) I really hope you can come to America to teach sometime, I would definitely be there especially since my sensei had to quit teaching due to a knee injury.

I am always impressed with how fluid Seki Sensei's movements are when drawing the katana. I was a bit surprised by it however using the second, outer belt does explain it somewhat.
Quick Question for Shogo: Is it common in iaido to hold the katana from an outer obi (as described in the video) or would most styles of iaido hold the katana from the inner obi?

How is the Katana, Hakama and sashi been wore, when the samurai are equipped with Do and Tare? I've did Kendo for some time and I always been wondering about that.

The Tanto are generally held just like the Wakizashi, or hidden inside the kimono!

I love seeing Seki Sensei do some awesome things with the katana, but the drawing technique and only using your left hand to sheathe and unsheathe the katana I feel like would be slower in a fight than the normal draw. It definitely looks better but is it practical for if someone is rushing at you

Great video as always. I have a question for Seki Sensei about other weapons they use in their style. I see a kama gets used a lot, but I was wondering if they ever use a Kusarigame or not?
In Asayama Ichiden Ryu we don’t have Kusari-gama, but Seki sensei himself is a master of it in a different ryuha!

How wide are you talking about? Kaku-obi can be used both for the inner obi, and for kimono!

In Aikido, traditionally, mudansha wear white obi and yudansha wear black. Apparently this is because Aikido adopted Judo's system before Judoka decided that each mudansha grade should have its own colour.
That‘s very interesting. I thought you carry the katana in the inner obi because it‘s more stable ro wear and it‘s also supported by the hakama sash, so I wonder how you keep the the sheath from falling out when it‘s in the outer obi.
There is a line(sageo) attached to the sheath(Saya) that is binded to the obi. The different Styles of binding influence how fast you can detach the Saya from the obi to also use the Saya as an second weapon.

@@jaketheasianguy3307 Oh they do! Thank you for telling me :) Once I also saw guys in kendo-like equipment, but heavier? At least heavier weapons, and they seemed to do more techniques. I wasn't Niten Institute nor police kendo thou, it was something else.
Asayama Ichiden Ryu trains Kata, sparring, mat cutting, etc., and all the Kata are done with two or more people to prove it’s effectiveness!

Whenever i try this and i draw the katana, the saya will fall through the outer obi? Almost as if the obi is not tight enough to hold the saya but trust me the obi is very tight around the waist? Please help :)

It's not locked, but it's not loose either so it'll fall out that easily!
So is a inner obi even necessary if you are not wearing a wakazaki?

So they can See what they are Doing More.
as well as their instructors.
Its harder to see what you are doing with a Black Belt
than it is See What your are doing with a White belt. ^ ^
that way if a Student is Making a Mistake
a More experienced Instructor Can Intervene faster
and Avoid More Potential accidents
