I absolutely agree with you about this book. I read it as part of a book club and really wasn't a fan. The message at the end just seemed very harmful and reduces depression and suicide down to something trivial which can be fixed with a simple shift in perspective. Anyone who has dealt with depression knows that you need to take actionable steps to overcome it. What did Nora really do to deal with her situation? Strange that the author is apparently a big mental health advocate and has been open with his own struggles! Great review ☺️

Thank you so much. I thought I was missing something when I was reading it and listening to all of these glowing reviews. Then I realized that just because I'm privileged enough to have great mental health care that's not the norm. Also it's kind of American to buy into thr individuality of toxic positivity. I, like you, was surprised that someone who was supposedly well versed with the ins and outs of mental health would write that ending!

Thanks for talking about mental illness. So important. The older I get, the more I feel like we should all see therapists. Yeah, I haven't heard good things about this book. It probably won't end up on my tbr.

I just finished the book and I really did enjoy reading it. I didn’t read the book from a mental health , self -help perspective because I don’t believe it was meant for self help. I thought it was entertaining and really made me use my imagination and reflect on some things in my life. But I can see how it would be disappointing for someone who took the book more serious ; relating it to mental illness Listening to your review did shined some light on some things for me. ❤️.

Yeah facts I enjoyed it I just feel like it added some perspective on my own life. She lived out different lives just to come to the fact that what she thought she wanted but what she needed was to live out her current life and find happiness in it and don’t live off regrets or other people

It's horrible that therapy is still so unacceptable by certain religious groups. Glad you have been able to find support as an adult.
For me this book seemed very "self-help through positive thoughts" which is incredibly harmful for people struggling with their mental health who need more than just prayers & positive mantras. I see what the author was trying to do...but it was a bit of a miss

Yeah I have starting hearing people call it "toxic positivity" and that's a perfect name for the end of this book.

@@KatrinaReads7 Yes! Toxic positivity sums it up well

Why was Nora so upset subconsciously about turning that piano pupil into a criminal? It wasn’t her that did that, but that reality’s Nora. When Nora went back to the Library, that boy was still a criminal. Nora didn’t change that reality. Living without your brother may be bothersome. But not being able to live with the guilt of that reality’s Nora turning someone to a life of crime, whom you hardly know is clearly ridiculous and a plothole.

I read this a couple of months ago and didn’t like it for similar reasons ... it didn’t feel like she earned the ending. Wanting to live is the first step, not the solution. It also makes me worry that people may read this and think they just need to think more positively to get better. There were some good ideas but the execution lacked nuance and depth. Really disappointing.
