Clam AV is better than nothing. Microsoft Defender is also available, but obviously if you're trying to get away from Microsoft then giving root permissions to them in your system isn't the move. Personally I use Microsoft Defender for all my internet facing devices, and Clam AV on my personal use devices.
Linux malware is probably more prevalent than MacOS malware because Linux is so easy to make malware for, and some people download Linux just because it doesn't get malware, despite MacOS being used more often than Linux.
I conflated virus and malware a lot but I hope you get the point.

Good point! I've made a few pieces of Linux malware, same stuff that gets caught by most AV's on Windows, and it did nothing to prevent it.
