Phillip, just NO! I would get fatigued just watching you go through the work yourself. You would need to have an entire crew with you to get anything done at all! Like I saw commented, if you want a big project to tackle, restore the missing half of your chateau. I've felt that you could just about see the missing part anyway!
As long as it doesn't become airborne, asbestos isn't a health risk. There are also several types of asbestos and only the rarer types are significantly hazardous to health.
I understand the desire to rescue a fine old building. I also understand that restoring one whose period interiors have vanished would allow you to install insulation, modern utilities, ducting etc, without having to destroy period finishes. BUT!! This looks like way too much. Just demolishing the hideous modern extensions would cost a fortune. My advice would be to find a smaller property that's similarly gutted but hasn't been engulfed in institutional extensions. Perhaps something like Dan's Chateau de Chaumont?
This! I think the only vague possibility of saving this place would be a business venture like Château du Theil, which was completely rebuilt to become a hotel and restaurant. Restoring it as a family home seems flat-out mental just because of the sheer size of it. Chaumont is enormous as a home (I once guesstimated about 500 m2 of living space, probably a bit less) but this looks to be much, much bigger.

It might be but not by one person and not as a home. Have a look at Château du Theil, it was at least as bad as this place and now the restaurant is up and running, the hotel should follow soon. That's a business with a chunky budget though and no pretense of putting back lost features, the inside looks like a completely new build.
There's always a way. If the right person finds it, it can be a great château again. Maybe someone who watches this video might see the potential you don't see.
Hi Phil, not going to say RUN! Just make a list of the Pros and Cons …… Cons in no particular order 1. Money Pit, 2. Removal of the add ons 3. Clean up after, approximately 3 or 4 years later 4. Have the building assessed for structural integrity, asbestos etc 5. spend a small fortune on getting the asbestos removed 6. Get the building re-assessed (damage may occur when asbestos is removed) 7. Each project has it ups and downs and for every project there is a person who will find their happiness in it. This is a massive project, but if you are a project manager and have enough work force behind you it is doable, there is great potential behind it, but you have to have the money and workforce to tackle it. Yes, it's interesting however you have too much to do at your place still. Fixing your machinery, completing your residence, moat, chapel, fencing, etc. Idgive yourself another 12 months first before looking at another project. Thanks for the tour though Phil. :)
Phil- wether you choose to buy it or not is your decision alone but maybe you need something to do from scratch that is yours, that you’re doing from the bottom up and not just doing running repairs. Whatever you choose to do will be amazing, as always

The previous owners/investors/financiers abandoned ship. Even IF one had the funds to completely renovate the structure(s), WHO would have the funds to maintain and/or live in it for any length of time? I respect and greatly appreciate the passion all of you have who are trying to save the ancient buildings, but I'd be inclined to salvage what architectural relics one could and demolish it.

Everything is fun to look at. Love the Mucky Mansion. You won't be warm for many years inside the 'hospital' chateau. Sadly, they destroyed all the things we love about a chateau. With the exception of staircases. Maybe, consider a 4 poster bed with the canopy blanket surround (the real reason they were used). Amazon has inexpensive Insulated cold weather Curtains that help keep cold out and warm inside.
If you're looking for a place to renovate I think you need to look at something a lot smaller. Like the cottage on your property. Even if it were brought back to it's original glory I wouldn't live there because it's on a very busy road.
The modern part could work as a place for exhibit and recovering of old cars, a school of recovering old cars, bicicles,even old airplanes. The land will hold much more than just the old chateau, but rather offer future to the people of France that love cars and old buildings. Good luck, buena suerte con la decisión.

I agree with Billy too RUN. It would be a life's work. Mind you look what Dan is doing to his complete wreck of a château which was all but destroyed by fire.
Phil it’s too insane for you. You started the bedroom months ago and never finished it. Stay where you can responsibly cope with the lot you have.
Phil.. that’s bonkers. Even if it was FREE, it wouldn’t be worth it. Sometimes, regrettably, some places are too far gone. That one is beyond that.
I am appalled by the amount of vandalism. What kind of anger makes someone do that kind of damage?

The previous owners/investors/financiers abandoned ship. Even IF one had the funds to completely renovate the structure(s), WHO would have the funds to maintain and/or live in it for any length of time? I respect and greatly appreciate the passion all of you have who are trying to save the ancient buildings, but I'd be inclined to salvage what architectural relics one could and demolish it.

Hey Phil, I understand you want and need to restore these beautiful old Chateau's, really think about this one, not only your time and money, but a lot of the money will go towards a lot of trash. Everything is fun to look at. Love the Mucky Mansion. You won't be warm for many years inside the 'hospital' chateau. Sadly, they destroyed all the things we love about a chateau. With the exception of staircases.
Maybe, consider a 4 poster bed with the canopy blanket surround (the real reason they were used). Amazon has inexpensive Insulated cold weather Curtains that help keep cold out and warm inside.

If you're looking for a place to renovate I think you need to look at something a lot smaller. Like the cottage on your property. Even if it were brought back to it's original glory I wouldn't live there because it's on a very busy road.
The modern part could work as a place for exhibit and recovering of old cars, a school of recovering old cars, bicicles,even old airplanes. The land will hold much more than just the old chateau, but rather offer future to the people of France that love cars and old buildings. Good luck, buena suerte con la decisión.
