Not going to lie James I used to binge watch your ff7 remake vods, the original play through, the one after the original and I could swear there was another but I might be mental, I’d love to watch your rebirth vods and it’s easy for me to say “just ignore the people who dislike the vods” but it’s up to you

Man if people are gonna hate you for your takes on 7 rebirth, it is what it is. It’s my personal game of the year, but there are definitely issues w both the story and the game itself, and every opinion about it is just as valid as everyone else’s. @leone9482 yes, it's because they are so different and even if we can agree about overall quality we have very different reaction depending on what aspects we like the most, if we love the world exploration for instance we won't be able to like X and if we like a certain type of character arcs then X is much more interesting than IX. That's fine everyone get what they want out of the series.
I honestly think playing that many games from a same series in a row and in order is a very big mistake though. That's because you will inevitably get burned out and won't be able to give the right amount of attention to the last games and even worse you will tend to use the same criteria from the previous game to judge the next.

I loved Rebirth, but I've always been more interested in FF7's characters than the story. Reaching the end of Rebirth, I was pretty much at the same point as I was with Remake: bewildered. Confused. Slightly angry. But I think the games get everything else right that i can still look past it. It's a shame others can't.
And it's crazy when people say they don't like 10 because that game's story is far deeper than most give it credit for. It's probably the deepest and most interesting game story-wise post Sakaguchi.
It's an unfortunate situation all round but that's ok. I discovered you through your 7Remake and OG VII videos and absolutely loved your enthusiasm and joy. Your 7 Rebirth trailer reactions were some of the best and I kept coming back to watch them.
When rebirth came out and I caught your streams, I admit I was really disheartened and disappointed at your reception to it and just you not being able to like it.
7 Rebirth isn't a perfect game by far, but I think it does a lot well. I think what it doesn't do well unfortunately irked you more than others and that's ok. It irked me as well but I focused on the amazing gameplay, music and visuals.
I'm glad you can address the issue 7 months later and hope for part 3 you can visit it with open eyes.

I am right there with you. After Remake I could have been won over on the whispers and the ending, but that was dependent on what they did with it. Unfortunately, what we got was Rebirth. I agreed with your reactions to Rebirth and what you had to say at the end. OG FF7 was not just my first JRPG but the game that turned me from someone who played games on occasion to really getting into it. I still remember where I was and how I was introduced to FF7. You are right that they have been altering the story of FF7 for years with the compilation and this remake is just the latest. I think there is one very important element that is missing with these Remake games and with the compilation, Sakaguchi. He is famously against sequels and spin-offs. Unless I am mistaken, the compilation and spin off games from other main line entries did not happen until after Sakaguchi left the company. So when you have FF7 remake and rebirth doing all this nonsense, it is a because Sakaguchi is not there to reign in all these bad ideas.
I like FF16. It has become one of my favorite games in the franchise. Clive is one the best protagonists in Final Fantasy and I was invested in the people around him. The story was incredible and the combat was really fun. Overall, 16 was a really good game. I have been going back and watching your playthroughs of the older games.
If you and your streaming viewers are having a good discussion and "having fun" with a game and are "in on the joke", why do the VODs come off so negative? Maybe you thought you were joking and having fun, but it wasn't showing. It's perfectly fine to not like a game. But it sounds to me like maybe you have trouble, when doing live commentary, to show objectivity you probably show in your scripted videos? I've seen a lot of streamers do this: they don't like a game and suddenly they're rolling their eyes at every line of dialogue and criticizing everything in sight. It's not fun to watch, even when they're right - and the viewer base gets pretty toxic on that stuff.
The one thing I'll say about fan bases is this: the haters are just as toxic as the fans. If you just don't vibe with a game but have fun with it, your VOD will come off as you having fun and most people will shrug off that you didn't like the game. If you vibe with the haters in chat who can't separate "game I don't like" from "bad game" and who sound like they're having fun but are actually whining and hating, then your VOD will come off as negative, and the only people who bother commenting will be negative.
I wish you the best and enjoyed many of your videos. Stream what you love, not what you think you should, and you'll almost certainly make better content than streaming stuff you don't even like.
If I think something is a bad game, I’ll call it a bad game. Games don’t have feelings. If that bothers you then that’s really a you issue. You can like a thing I don’t like, neither one invalidates the other. I’m not going to come into the comments of someone who loved rebirth for example and berate them. I just allow them to express their love. I’ll express how I feel in my own space too.

Interesting. As a huge fan of VII OG I was very put off by Remake - especially initially. I warmed a little more over time but I did my best to go into Rebirth with an open mind and had an amazing experience that I'll really treasure for a long time.
Just a thought, but you can put unlisted videos into a public playlist. Maybe that would be an idea for the Rebirth vods? I'm annoyed I missed them but I get not wanting to be flooded with negative comments. I enjoy the critical reactions and they're why I stuck around compared to the overly positive reactions on other channels that feel a bit fake. But then I've always hated FF8 and it was good to laugh at the memes. If humans had wings they'd be monsters!

My brother bought 12 when it first came out. He was so excited and told me I needed to play it. I did. For 30 minutes. Then I got up. Hit the eject button on the PS2. Pulled the disc out. Turned to my brother. Held it out. Said: "Get this out of my sight, or I will get it out of yours." Fun fact: it's been 22 years, I've never seen that disc again. I know he finished the game. But I never saw him playing it, he took me seriously. I still, even now, get snarly at the mention of 12.

I felt the same way you did with 10 about 8. Everyone online raves about how its their favorite in the series. I've played every final fantasy game since 1 on the NES. Even the Japanese ones. I absolutely DESPISED 8. I really sincerely don't mean to be negative with this comment, but a lot of people's feelings towards these games are significantly nostalgia based. It's a real shame that they can't just accept a differing opinion and move on. Why hate on someone just because they don't like a game that you like. It's lame. I know it's easy to say, "just do whatever you like and we'll watch", but I know it's not always that easy. Really just want you to enjoy what you are doing because it's the reason I like watching your content. Your love for games in general is contagious and it gets me excited to play games myself.

I think with all your criticisms of 10, it makes sense. I necessarily agree with your criticism, but I think back to playing the game, and how the story doesn't fully feel completely fleshed out UNTIL you're finishing up the Zanarkand portion... which then makes any subsequent playthrough feel MORE fulfilling, because you pick up on a ton of stuff. And who has time to create a "second reaction" to a game...
I encourage you to try 12 if you haven't. it's a more straightforward story, but you yourself said you like it when everyone has a clear-cut role to play in battle, and the Zodiac Age version lets you do that. I'd be interested to see your take on the battle system where you automate your characters to find the most effective combination.
As for 13, yes, it's a linear game, but the concepts around the story, the terminology used in the world, and the entire backstory aren't even explained in game, that's all left in logfiles you have to read to glean info about the world.
I remember hating ff10 when i started it but it did really grow on me as it went on...its probably one of my favourites
I love the FF franchise and honestly if you did post vids being negative on them I wouldn't attack you but I would definitely just ignore the content. If it makes you feel any better you did convince me to start a game club with my friends and go through the FF games. I actually platinumed all three FF13 games in June. You'd probably not like them lol!
When my brother Loves a game, I Hate it. His favorite Final Fantasies are 8 and 10. I Hate Both of Them. 8 made me cry tears of frustration and mantra "I'm not having fun. I'm not having fun. I'm not having fun." 10 made me nauseous with the camera changes and then the Blitzball instruction came on...my soul fled my body. That was 2 years ago now, I wonder where it went? I will never finish either of those games. It will not happen. 7...never captured my attention. Not once, I've been chipping away at it, an hour at a time. But I find it boring. I found it way more fun to watch others play 7 than to play it myself. It's not interesting to me. (Tifa has the same walking animation as Scarlett and makes me want to barf). 9 is awesome. 9 is my favorite. 9 is my life. 6 is my second favorite. I haven't done more than dabble in the first 5, I forsee myself hating 2 though.
Oh man james, i went back and watched your original FF7 vod and it was so sad to see your excitement knowing where it was heading with rebirth lol. But it’s interesting because (as someone who loved ff7 since 1998) i found the story changes in remake sooo offputting and i felt like i was going nuts cause everyone loved it. But i knew that they were going to butcher the themes and story with what they did with the bullshit “defeating fate” thing. So watching your entire experience was such a trip bc i knew you were gonna have that realisation too and it was like watching in slow motion.
also when you were streaming rebirith and got to the cave of the gi and suddenly sephiroth shows up and you just screamed OH FUCK OFF and put your head in your hands was so fucking funny lolll relatable tbh

Same! It’s always paired with 7 as one of the best. I think it’s one of those games you need to just play off stream or you’ll miss all the subtle things. Wakkas character arc in particular

As someone who grew up on and loved FF 7, 8, and 9 (my favorite)...FFX killed my love for the series for a long time. Didn't click with that game when it came out, and haven't clicked with it on subsequent attempts to replay it. Not a big fan of 7 Remake either. Had a great time with XVI though.

Rebirth is extremely overrated and I wasn’t personally a fan, it felt like a chore tbh. FFVII is one of my favorites but the fan base is sooooo toxic, it’s hard to have legit conversations about what’s wrong with the game because you’ll get attacked. It’s the same with BG3 lol
I think you might be one of the only real people that didn't like Rebirth I've seen outside of like facebook group trolls and shit who give weird or shallow reasons. Its all good man. Its okay to have your own opinions about stuff. It sucks that the space we occupy in time is so terminally online that you feel wishy-washy about voicing your take. As much as I love FFX I would rather watch you play something you enjoy as I know working on a project you don't care for can feel very uninteresting to do. I've been watching for over 7 years now so I feel I have a good idea of what you like playing and what you don't and I can assure you there are so many amazing games out there that I know you'd really love.
It's frustrating being part of a large fandom. Because without exception, once they're big, they're obnoxious. Combine that with multiple fandoms that have off and on been battling each other since their respective games released and thus are innately primed to savage any poor soul that wanders too close unknowingly... yeah. You're not the first and sadly not the last to catch strays for having an opinion.
You liked the classic FF games, you should do Chrono Trigger and Xenogears. They are both excellent games that nail what made the classic FF games good. There are other snes jrpgs that are wonderful also, like Earthbound and the Lufia games. PS1 had tons of SE games that are great like Vagrant Story and FF Tactics. You're not gonna remember me but I said you weren't gonna like 10, but I think you have a good taste, or a similar taste to me, and basically there are a lot of good games from the earlier Square eras that don't fall into the pitfalls that later Square does. I think Final Fantasy 16 is a slow burn. I've seen an uptick in people posting their playthroughs recently. People are finally getting around to it... and seem to be enjoying the overall experience.
duuuude I would pay to watch your Rebirth VODs if you ever decide to drop them on Patreon. though I also don't mind waiting until part 3 haha anyway, it's totally fine that you dropped FFX cuz it doesn't click with you, no need to force playing it if your heart's already not in it. FFIX didn't click with me at all back then and years later I went back to it and I can appreciate it much better

I appreciated your commitment to the Final Fantasy franchise, and enjoyed watching your playthroughs of the older titles (4 is my personal favorite, though the FF fanbase prefers 6 over it). But yeah, it is quite a lot, and I'm sure you want to spend time with other games as well.
What about FF10 were you just not enjoying?
For awhile there, I felt 10 was the last big fan favorite for older FF players.
11 was online (didn't play it).
Some people, like myself, missed out on 12 due to how late it came out on the PS2, with then next gen systems releasing soon.
13 had its faults. Didn't play the 13 sequels.
14 was online (only recently starting playing it).
The long awaited rebranded 15 was ok; the initial release ending felt incomplete and made no sense to me.
16 went all action rpg, which divided the FF fanbase even more, and I see certain valid criticisms about it, but I really enjoyed 16. Solid gameplay and voice acting, mature gritty story, and 16 went back to a more medieval setting, which I missed having. I also wanted to support a new team helming a numbered Final Fantasy title.
Played FF7: Remake and still currently chipping away at FF7: Rebirth (having a bit of mini-game fatigue).
Sorry to hear about the comment section for Rebirth being so narrow minded. Really excited to see the persona 3 playthrough be uploaded at some point since i loved the P5R highlights!

I think a lot of people who have played the original don’t like remake/rebirth. Like you said it’s fun to see the triple a remake of a beloved game… but the storytelling of the remakes is weird and takes away from the power and strength of the original story - time will tell but I find it unlikely that the third one is going to end well

Yeah you were pretty miserable forcing yourself to play the FF games. I don't think any games are enjoyable if your going to force yourself to sit down and just go through the motions. Play what you feel like playing. It makes for better content.

Rebirth's poor storytelling mechanics and pacing really soured the experience for me and fans keep excusing it as intentional. Gameplay, visuals, characters and music were well done, but SE devolved too much into the crypticism they've become infamous for and are clearly banging their heads trying to differentiate it from og in a way that I feel sorely missed the mark. Even more annoying is the fact that SE marketed each game as self-contained standalones that can be enjoyed and understood by anyone when it shows like some weird FF7 fanatic conspiracy. I was one of those people begging for a remake and now I'm not even excited to see what they do with part 3. We shouldn't have to wait 10+ years and 3 games later for any sort of pay off. And knowing SE, it won't stick the landing.
I'm sorry that all the negative reactions just put you off the whole "let's replay all of FF" project to the point of even isolating yourself, dude. Nobody wants to hear that their baby sucked, but geez FF fandom, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all?
FFX was super special for me in the early '00's but i find i can hardly replay it these days because the voice acting and the uncanny valley of the characters just bothers the crap out of me. Honestly I'd rather play with sprites/weird blocky characters & text in that case. Mileage just varies between people, and so many people have rose-tinted glasses, that doesn't help.
I'm sorry you weren't as hype for Rebirth. Maybe you're one of these people who likes it when the whole series is done & we have all the answers, maybe not. But i'm looking forward to hearing your full thoughts either way, your big retrospective videos are always fantastic & insightful & nuanced.

Appreciate the kind words. It honestly wasn't really the negative response to my thoughts, it was more the fact I wasn't enjoying myself but felt like I'd sort of locked myself into continuing, felt a little lost with where to take things. Needed to take a step back to re-evaluate what I was doing, looking forward to pushing on with more variety and focussing on the stuff I want to make rather than what I think I "need" to make.

You should absolutely skip FF11 and FF14 since they are MMOs. But, maybe you should play FF16 and abandon the rest of the older FF games until Remake part 3 comes out. I look forward to your FF16 videos, though! And you are entitled to your opinions and criticisms of games. Plus, it is based on mindset. If you play a game one year, you might love or hate it, but you play it again five years later, and you might completely reverse your opinion because mindset is important. This is especially the case if you are grinding game after game after game.
Well honestly I've only watched your reactions to ff games and nothing else, don't really care about modern final fantasy stuff since I haven't played them and what I enjoy about the format is the condensed reaction to something I know with occasionnal deeper thoughts.
So probably not going to watch the rest of what you do but absolutely don't poison yourself trying to fit a niche you feel stuck in, if you don't enjoy the experience do something else!

This makes a lot of sense. I am one of those people that have been looking forward to your extremely negative reactions of the remake trilogy. Of course you'll always get people fighting with your opinion but FF7 rebirth was in the honeymoon phase where everyone would defend it. I think people will be more receptive now that a few months have passed. If your criticism hits the nail on the head, it'll age well imo
It's cool I didn't like Rebirth either outside the graphically upgraded member berries. There is absolutely 0 chance that the story will land on its feet in part 3.
It absolutely will not end in any satisfying way in part 3. The story has already gone too off the rails into nonsense. I am just waiting to see what sort of chaotic mess the ending to this thing is going to be.
