  • Niger: Junta PM Blames US For Broken Military Ties | Firstpost America
Niger's Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine has blamed the United States for a broken military pact between the two countries that allowed the US troops to stay and conduct counter-terrorism operations in West Africa. Zeine said that Washington tried to dictate how the Sahel country should conduct its affairs and also failed to justify the presence of its troops in Niger while "doing nothing" to end the jihadist insurgency in the region. Last year, a military coup ousted Niger's democratically elected president, a move which prompted the US to freeze security support to the nation. Following this, the ruling junta of Niger terminated the military pact and Washington directed its 1,000 troops to leave the country.
