I see there's a few people here who know this piece only as a theme from the "Reilly Ace of Spies" TV series. Here's a bit of an interesting trivia: this piece was originally written by Shostakovich for a Soviet film based on the book by British writer Ethel Voynich (nee Boole - her father was George Boole of the boolean algebra, for all of you programmers out there :)) called The Gadfly. Voynich knew Sidney Reilly personally and used some of his autobiographical facts and stories for her title character. Reilly knew that and didn't object. The book became extraordinarily popular in the Soviet Union. So when they made the film in 1953, Shostakovich wrote an entire orchestral suite that became the soundtrack and has since taken on the life of its own. Thirty years later the Brits made the series about Reilly's life. In an interesting bit of coincidence, the piece they chose as the main theme was Romance from "The Gadfly".

I used to listen to alternative music, but now its all dissolved into classical. Classical music is beautiful and it relates to a lot of archetypes. It just floods you with emotions... memories. People these days don't have the attention span to listen to a 10 minute song. However, theres just not enough emotions compared to a classical piece. If you really tune into what the classical piece is telling you... then you will enjoy this genre.

Shostakovich composed the Gadfly suite in accompaniment to a motion picture detailing the life of a young Italian boy who joins revolutionaries with the purpose of defeating tyranny and to establish a constitutional government. The movie “Ovod” (or The Gadfly) was based on a book. What you’re hearing is a story of a romantic tragic hero who begins his journey facing confusion then emotion; which manifests ultimately into anger. This anger pushes the boy into a state of contemplation wherein he finds acceptance. With his acceptance he experiences triumph even at the brink of death. It is only then that he becomes a symbol and a legend, The Gadfly.

I too was struck by the beauty of this piece when watching the "Reilly, Ace of Spies" series. A strange man to be so awesomely creative while under the thumb of a monster dictator.

Оставьте свои западные бредни о Сталине. Он не был для нас советских граждан диктатором - запомните это. Шостакович получил несколько сталинских премий, к Вам на Запад уезжать не думал, занимал высокие административные должности!

I just turned 15 on the 4th of July. I got everything I wanted. A strand of Beethoven's hair, some busts of Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, and an original 1825 score of Don Givoanni used in an Austrian concert. I am very grateful that such music and inspiration can still be found. This is so beautiful and I thank you for posting it.
