hey just wondering what version this is? who is it played by? thanks for the great video
Who is the violinist in this wonderful song?
@@vardanvardan7186 romance del Tábano en que obra de Shostakovich esta incluido?
My eldest son used to play this on the violin - he was in a quartet. He died at 44 and it's taken me 15 years to be able to play it without falling apart. Absolutely beautiful.
May his soul rest
Peace upon him♥️
It’s crazy this comment is twelve years old. I wonder if this commenter is even alive anymore? Hopefully
@@MinecartProductz If you were to assume she had her son at 20, if you did the math, she'd be at least 92 now.
May he rest in peace and his memory never be forgotten
My husband died 2 days ago and he has requested this for his funeral. I will fall to bits when I hear it. Beautiful
A beautiful piece to depart to. I am sorry for your loss.
Sympathies & Condolences, Dear Lady!
what a piece he chose. I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️
I'm sorry for ur loss , may rest in peace 🙏
This was the music that was played as my wife's coffin was carried from the church to her grave. Four and a half years ago now.
My son is 6 months old. When he cries we play this song for him, he either settles and listens or falls asleep. Something about this song makes all of us calm and drift to our inner world. Thank you Shostakovich
Music like this makes me grateful to be alive.

I fully agree. It makes my heart ache. If you've ever watched the 12 part series, Reilly, Ace of Spies on Masterpiece Mystery on PBS, out in 1979 and on video and DVD, they play this in the opening of each episode with black and white background of scenes from Russian history, the Imperial family etc. Sidney Reilly, go to Amazon and read all about who he was. Fascinating !
The sadness in Dmitri's music was so profound
he was a sad besutyful person
Nothing can be compared to Mahler when it comes to incorporating personal sadness into music
Melancholy inspires a musical and gifted instrument
Brings a tear to my eyes. Beautiful.
Probably because of the depression
This piece is so unlike the general impression people generally have about Shostakovich: Serious. Dissonant. Modern. But this romance from the Gadfly is just about as timeless and unabashedly beautiful as it gets.
His Waltz No. 2 is also beautiful.
Чем тяжелее становилась жизнь этого композитора, тем сильнее и светлее делалась его музыка.
So beautiful. I consider Shostakovich the very best composer of the 20th century.
David Kennedy i agree

You have good taste indeed. David

One of the most beautiful melodies ever.
It lifts my heart, soul annd spirit each time I listen to this beautiful melody.
how lucky we are that Tovarish Shostakovich wrote such beautiful music. He is one of the reasons we can still find such beauty in todays often ugly world.. Spasibo Maestro.
So true Spasibo.

Playing this for my unborn daughter. I hope she is comforted by it after she is born

Wow I've realised how ignorant I was.
Great piece.
Being 15 I barely ever listen to classical.
What a eye opener.
Here we are, 14 years later. Hope you kept classical in your heart for all those years :)

He had good taste.
and I am sure you miss him dearly
If you like this piece, try more Shostakovich! Waltz #2 is a hauntingly beautiful opus. His symphonies and concerti are products of a tormented soul who experienced much suffering, but used it as an inspiration for truly divine works!

I see there's a few people here who know this piece only as a theme from the "Reilly Ace of Spies" TV series. Here's a bit of an interesting trivia: this piece was originally written by Shostakovich for a Soviet film based on the book by British writer Ethel Voynich (nee Boole - her father was George Boole of the boolean algebra, for all of you programmers out there :)) called The Gadfly. Voynich knew Sidney Reilly personally and used some of his autobiographical facts and stories for her title character. Reilly knew that and didn't object. The book became extraordinarily popular in the Soviet Union. So when they made the film in 1953, Shostakovich wrote an entire orchestral suite that became the soundtrack and has since taken on the life of its own. Thirty years later the Brits made the series about Reilly's life. In an interesting bit of coincidence, the piece they chose as the main theme was Romance from "The Gadfly".
Or maybe they knew the connection, and chose the piece deliberately?
The Gadfly is one of the single best books. It is available in print & as an ebook. It is beyond perfect.
Additional trivia re they've series, they knew the connection by all accounts & chose "Romance" from The Gadfly suite deliberately.
@@beccajames9341 OMG, yes. As a proud owner of the 1897 1st American edition, agree 💯
Thank you so much for sharing this information. Sending you a heart felt gratitude
"As he puts it, he had never met someone more shy and introvert in his life.."...he had a reason to be ..Stalin. Shostakovich was a brave man in a violent time.
Yes WWII was a violent time there.
This is stunningly beautiful ! I'm rediscovering Shostakovich and loving every second of it ! 🦚🙂
you will discover a musician in yourself.
Listen--Classical music means a lot to me. When I was small, my mom told me that I was going to become a great violinist. Despite my constant bullying at my music school and utter contempt from my teachers and professors, I marched on; I made sure to practiced every single day.
Now look where I am-
Still unable to play this piece :)
The very embodiment of how it feels to be in love in musical form. It's amazing how Shostakovich manages to imbue so much meaning into one single melody.
Pure genius! Pure Shostakovich! There is a magical, haunting quality to this piece! I agree: it could be heard over and over again.
That violin...oh, that violin...

One of the most haunting melodies of all time!
I learned to play this piece in music school. Today I still perform it in my solo concerts.Melody written by Music Wizard.
This is absolutely beautiful. I don't know much about classical music, but he just conveys so much emotion. Very Beautiful.
The piano paints a serene background for the violin to begin a simple, yet sweet and emotional melody that builds triumphantly, all the while remaining modest. When the violin catches its second wind, the double chords hold nothing back and reveal the true emotion.
What an incredible piece.
So nice, the harmonic sounds in this melody are almost divine.
I believe the artists are Piers Lane (Piano) and Tasmin Little (Violin). Thanks you two for this gem!
My mum loved this piece RIP 2/7/14miss you so much xxxx

@Xrysh Argh Thanks so much
I have started watching Reilly Ace of Spies which has this music as its opening theme music. Someone wrote it was Gadfly so I came on RUclips to hear it all. My goodness I do not think I have ever heard such beautiful music, it brought me to tears.
I loved that series. Absolutely brilliant and what brought me to this rich, haunting, music. You are not alone!
is this just 1 violin + piano?
maybe the most beautiful piece of music I ever heard.
Yes, 1 violin.
I decided long ago that this was to be played at my funeral. Beautiful rendition
My Mum's choice for her funeral today. Love you forever Mum.
@@Ccclabla so very sorry for your loss.
My father did
always cringe at all the clowns planning their funeral music here
@Marcel_Audubon there are people in this thread speaking about the loss of a loved one and how they would and have honored them. The only takeaway from your comment is that you are either wholly unloved yourself and therefore incapable of common decency regarding someone else's loss, or just a moronic internet troll getting their jollies. Either way we can all see who the real clown is. Enjoy the rest of your day
Played with such feeling. Marvellous.
+Joshua Newton Yes, but by whom? We should be told.
That's true. They deserve a big round of applause!

I used to listen to this over ja over again. Once my Grand daughter 4yrs. heard when I listened to it on my iPhone. She rushed to me and asked what are You listening. Then she asked if she could have my phone, took it and went in to the woods to listen😃.

I Watched "Ace Of Spies" and I absolutely LOVED the series and had to watch it several time not only because the series was excellent but because I was so enthralled and in love with the music. So I Google it. Not knowing who wrote it or anything about it! I love it and listen to it at least 8 or 9 times a week. I just can't get enough of this beautiful haunting piece of glorious beauty!!
This is my most favourite piece of classical music , it' strides the scales so beautifully . It both sends you swirling back to the life you have lived or even into one you have not yet lived. All emotions are touched. Definitely one to send me on my last journey me thinks ! This man must have had a lovely soul!
Dmitri Shostakovich's music captures the widespread, subdued mood of the Russians in the fledgling Soviet Union!
I love the melancholic atmosphere of his music!
Unfortunately "the fledgling Soviet Union" was nowhere as beautiful as this piece of music and caused the deaths of millions of human beings.
Stephen Leo what do you know about the young Soviet Union? Nothing
@@alexxfilippov I know enough about Russian history to know you must be a communist asshole. The fledgling Soviet Union under "Uncle Joe" Stalin grew into the most proficient killing machine of his own people, Polish people and people in Soviet Bloc countries. The Soviet Union killed more human beings than Adolph Hitler. This of course takes nothing away from the beauty of Shostakovich's music, but to compare it with the "widespread, subdued mood of the fledgling Soviet Union" is ludicrous.
@@stephenleo5606 , omg) a brainwashed is detected) several the greatest composers of 20 century lived in Stalin times. In 1936 Prokofiev returned to USSR from the west. so he considered life in USSR better than life on the west.

Je découvre. Simplement sublime !
Russia has produced the greatest composers of simple glorious melodies that evoke the deepest emotions of the human spirit and soul.
Just imagine what a world we would live in if people could live together in such harmony,
It's possible if we could eradicate all politics from this fucked up planet.
This fucked up planet should be burned. And it will. The people like rats will eat each other. This fucking hole should be burned with cattle because they will not going to be changed.
Until "Ace Of Spies" I was so in love With "Tristess" by Chopin, I adored and couldn't get enough of "Tristess" I now have more beauty to add to my days!! I love these gloriously BEAUTIFUL MASTERPIECES!! They make my time each each day so worth while so beautiful!!
Absolutly beautiful, it makes me feel so melancholic
This is one of the best pieces of the 21 century. I can really feel shostakovich just having a moment in his life were he stopped thinking about the world around him. I can see him sitting by his piano and singing this beautiful romance
What a lovely lovely piece, with that intense yearning quality I love so much. There is a touch of the Neopolitan about it too.
I used to listen to alternative music, but now its all dissolved into classical. Classical music is beautiful and it relates to a lot of archetypes. It just floods you with emotions... memories. People these days don't have the attention span to listen to a 10 minute song. However, theres just not enough emotions compared to a classical piece. If you really tune into what the classical piece is telling you... then you will enjoy this genre.
Adoro a obra de Dmitri ShostaKovich, sempre toca no meu coração.
Shostakovich composed the Gadfly suite in accompaniment to a motion picture detailing the life of a young Italian boy who joins revolutionaries with the purpose of defeating tyranny and to establish a constitutional government. The movie “Ovod” (or The Gadfly) was based on a book. What you’re hearing is a story of a romantic tragic hero who begins his journey facing confusion then emotion; which manifests ultimately into anger. This anger pushes the boy into a state of contemplation wherein he finds acceptance. With his acceptance he experiences triumph even at the brink of death. It is only then that he becomes a symbol and a legend, The Gadfly.
I too was struck by the beauty of this piece when watching the "Reilly, Ace of Spies" series. A strange man to be so awesomely creative while under the thumb of a monster dictator.
Never heard
such a beautiful and sad music before. Yes, it brings tears to my eyes.
Оставьте свои западные бредни о Сталине. Он не был для нас советских граждан диктатором - запомните это. Шостакович получил несколько сталинских премий, к Вам на Запад уезжать не думал, занимал высокие административные должности!
