Joey, you are doing a nice job of chronicling the Wildwood happenings
My childhood summers were spent in Wildwood. Many happy memories. I got to Wildwood back then by Steam Train getting off at the old Andrews Ave station shlepping luggage and pots and pans, two steps ahead of grandma. (Yea, I’m old) We kept house back then, so money would stretch the whole summer. Most hotels/motels back then were owned by families, built with modest means and with the hope that someone else pays the rent while they too enjoy the shore and escape the heat. No air conditioning, refrigerators, or tv back then. We did have ice boxes. Held the squeaky, full-screen door open for the iceman as he carried blocks of ice to our kitchen, Also, there were guys shlepping the beach with white boxes hanging heavy over their shoulders full of dry ice selling Fudgy Wudgies. (I see they’re on wheels now) Glad to put the box down, open it to get a cold whiff of dry ice air, and sell ice cream. Tough days’ work if you ask me. The streets flooded with every heavy rain. (I hear you talking about that now even today) Get a few large cardboard boxes from Acme market and canoed down Pacific Ave for as long as the box lasted. Lots of fun. The rooming houses and motels were modest till the fifties when we saw the Art-Deco, neon hotel phase kick in. Every year I was excited to explore the streets to see what new neon sign or fancy motel was being built. And the first thing after I dropped my luggage on the rooming house steps, I ran to the Boardwalk to see what new rides or stores were added. I stopped going to Wildwood in the '70s, sporadically visiting in the '90s and again in the 2010s. I've seen the slow deterioration and maybe a little government mismanagement over the years. Wildwood made a few attempts at reverting to its old glory but always fell a little short. I mention a few of my personal anecdotes of past wildwood memories to let you know I have a soft spot in my heart for Wildwood. So I think I have a right to say: I'm concerned about the remake of Wildwood. There’s a different reason for the remaking of wildwood now. It’s being financed and built mostly by developers or real estate companies for profit. While I understand the need and motivation to build with an eye toward profit, I’m worried that the charm, good feel, and look the town once had will be lost. Right now, many of the newer buildings, condos, and multistory, multi-use buildings are starting to look like the back streets of Camden, Philadelphia, or Atlantic City. I know much of the fight to keep that special-place charm of Wildwood with progress and modernization in mind is a fight you are personally taking up. I hope the Town fathers appreciate what you are doing. It will never be the same as way-back-when but let’s keep enough of the history, look and feel, so all those who come and enjoy Wildwood now know it had a grand past and will have a grand future.
PS: Where are the bakeries? The best and I’m from NYC. Sadly, they are all gone, One, in particular, GANZERS on Pacific.
Also, now that I’m remembering: Hires Root Beer shack on the beach in The Crest. Freshly made root beer with crushed ice - on a hot day - Heaven. (5 cents)

In the early 60's my family rented a place on Glee wood Avenue maybe a block & a halve off the boardwalk. They had an old bowling Avenue on Glenwood Ave just off the boardwalk and a Mack's pizza right last it. Place did not have air conditioning or TV but a frig. Few years later we spent two separate weeks on first little hotel on 20th street right off the boardwalk. Think if was owned by a guy called Pete. This was great. We would only have to walk a hundred feet from the beach to eat a quick lunch then go back to the beach. When I had young kids we stayed across the street at the Beach Five or Beach Court hotel. Had a nice pool. Now we only go to Crest for a weekend and a few weeks down cleaner & quieter Ocean City Md. Restaurants down there so much better then too many Wildwood tourist traps.

Hi Joey. It's good to see the renovations and upgrades that are underway in Wildwood. Especially in the North Wildwood Bay area, the Crest, and Diamond Beach. However, in center Wildwood the construction resembles Section 8 Housing; ugly, cramped together, and difficult parking. Where's the pool? No way would I ever consider spending my hard earned vacation dollars on that eyesore. Joey, you mentioned several times the State made this possible with grants. It's making sense now.

Happy to hear about the Ocean Holiday. Staying at the Bristol and looking at a part teardown eyesore for 3 years has been sad since we stayed at the OH in its better days. Icona I hope scaled down their plans for this small lot to fit in better with the area. They now have the Mahalo Diamond Beach which is their typical facelift of a larger property and has the room to do things like a waterfall. They have a lot of structural work to do on the OH as it's rusted and sagging in sections. Any word on salvaging the sign?

It's probably like it is for us here in Pigeon Forge/Sevierville/Gatlinburg TN.
We get 14 million visitors a year but Jan thru mid May is pretty desolate. Tourist towns don't have much that the locals can utilize. All of the big areas are covered by tourist traps. Those little stores give us a break on things we need without fighting traffic to get across town to a Walmart or grocery store.

My brother and I were looking around there at the changes from the sidewalk into the parking lot. It's 100% oceanfront but most of the units have an intermediate view of the parking lot. A guy who was sitting there in front of one of the back units started yelling at us that we were trespassing and to get out of there before he called the police!. Not exactly a good advertisement for the condo as imagine you would be dealing with him as part of the Association!

That's what I was thinking when I watched it. I live in a crazy tourist region. Even the tackiest, smallest cabins are going upward of 500K. It's all about investors turning them into money producing Airbnb rentals. Airbnb is the end of home buying as we know it.
If locals can't live there and tourists are priced out, I don't know who's going to work those hospitality and service jobs. We're desperate for employees here because no one can afford the cost of living.
      They're ruining everything.
When I come back to WW this year, I'll be staying at a motel on the outskirts. I'm not supporting that greed.
