Wow, I am shocked we are talking about UK crowds here, if they don't stay 120% behind the band that plays they are gone when it rains. I have already seen the complete place empty as soon as it starts to rain. Only a handful of hardcore fans stayed. When Babymetal played, I was looking at the sea of people still there, I was mesmerized. It was not just raining, it was POURING down on them, and the crowd stayed. They didn't move an inch. I literally got goosebumps.
Here you know, just know that they are the real deal.

That was the famous "Drownload 2016 UK" appearance.
You can see from the reaction how they made converts at metal festivals.
With Rob Zombie, and members of Korn, Trivium, Slipknot, etc.
Which got them the opportunity to be the opening act for Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Judas Priest, Metallica, and so on.
They worked like Hell to get where they are.
Now they're the ones inviting groups like Sabaton, Bring Me The Horizon, Creeper, SKYND, etc. to open for them in Japan or on tour.

I love this version of this song. Quality not withstanding. I'm glad you pointed out Boh, that's one of the things that is always hilarious about this video. Especially after the crowd interaction break, you can see him jumping along with the girls. Always make me laugh. Also when Su-Metal hits that last long note and the video pans on her and it's just raining on her there is something magical about it. Maybe it's just me, but that is a great showing from them.

Nice reaction to Downpour. This is how Babymetal gets their due. Babymetal puts it all into their performances. They want to do the best they can for the fans. That is a big deal for them. Their promoter Koba has said that Babymetals stage presence has actually intimidated him. Because they are so focused, and their personalities are different than the humble ultra-polite ladies you see in interviews. This goes double for Su I think. She is laser focused and full of confidence on the stage. This is why folks say Su is over 10' tall on stage and when Moa and Yui are with her you can see them from space. The 3 little girls from Japan who became larger than life on stage. Someone has to make a movie about this inspiring story. Su reminds me of another fearless female lead singer. She also happens to be 5'2" off stage. Pat Benatar. Different kind of singers but that stage presence is the same. Although Pat doesn't have a death stare that I can recall seeing. I know I just compared Su to a legend in the music industry. With 10 years of Babymetal under their wings. Su and her crew of Moa and the Kami's will be too. Or as Moa called them team Babymetal. A team anyone One can join all you gotta do is "Don't Think, Feel"

I've played on a local festival in the rain and I can concur, it's not easy and can get uncomfortable too. I live in the tropics too so the rain also means higher humidity which also makes it feel a lot hotter than it is on stage. Sweat + falling water makes it harder to focus too.

Thanks again from Japan 有難う💛。As you noticed, it was raining very hard and floor was all over wet. Three girls could have aborted the performance and gone back to a comfortable hotel but they didn't because the huge crowd was waiting and no one left the venue. The girls never modified their choreo even on the slippery stage (You can actually see Su-Metal slipping lightly at 06:19 in your video. ). On the contrary, Yui and Moa threw themselves onto the wet floor and Kamis moved their bodies hard (BOH, bassist, jumped) with the girls to cheer up everyone there. Those scenes moves me to tears.
In an interview, Su said this Download 2016 was one of the most impressive festivals because of the bad weather. She felt very happy to see the crowd waiting for them in such drenched condition. In addition, she thought the heavy rain worked as some kind of stage effects to make their performance look dramatic to the audiences in a fever. I love such a positive mindset of Su to accept any situation.

Babymetal started at Summer Sonic 2012. At the 'side show messe', basically a stage which wasn't a real stage, just a stage they had comedians perform at the food court.
By 2017 they were on the Summer Sonic mainstage. Just before the headliner Foo Fighters. The same stage Babymetal had seen headliner Metallica perform live for the first time in 2013 after their own 2013 performance on a small stage.

England's rainy season? That is the entire year! How many summer holidays i have spent with six weeks of rain and cloudy weather. It is great you mentioned about the control the Festival organisers have over the bands. If I remember correctly, the bands playing during the day had about half an hour for their set. I believe the BabyMetal set was six songs. How can you hope to inspire a crowd in the torrential rain with such a short set? Watch BabyMetal and be amazed! It was brilliant the way the fans did their circle pits and some were shirtless, regardless of the weather. An inspiration to all Festival goers.

What is this David? A Babymetal reaction under 40 minutes? Just kidding, great reaction and review as usual! I agree with you, that the sound mixing was a bit meh, but you have to use what you get at a festival and make the best of it, what Babymetal and the Kamis surely did. That moment when Su takes out her IM and tells the crowd “Let us hear your voice” always gives me goosebumps. Also, Yui and Moa laying down kn the ground despite the fact it is soaking wet, always impresses me and just shows how professional they are. Having the courage to go on that wet stage when it is pouring down so heavy is incredible. Props to the crowd tho, waiting in the rain (the start of the show was delayed due to the heavy rain) and enjoying the show just shows how popular Babymetal is in the UK (and everywhere else for that matter). Not to forget that they had Rammstein, Korn, Black Sabbath, Nigthwish, Iron Maden and many other great bands in the lineup 2016. See you in the next one!

Ah, Karate at Download 2016.... This is my goto vid to show my friends what Babymetal is all about. Other people might show Headbanger, Road of Resistance, or Rondo of Nightmare..... Those are great performances, don't get me wrong, but this here is basic Babymetal. Su's Vocals, the Kamiband rocking out, Yui and Moa leading the crowd, and the Crowd participation. In some of their Japan mega concerts you'd expect the Japanese crowd to go bonkers, but to see the look of surprise on my friends faces, when they witness a sea of non-Japanese metal heads, singing along with 3 little Japanese girls... That is priceless. And when she took off her ear piece and "let us hear your voice" Goosebumps. 🤘🦊🤘

You're absolutely right about rain making everything much more complicated, yet they still pulled off a great live performance.
You talk about how impressive it is that the girls performed the full choreography despite the slippery floor. I agree with you. It's possible to see them slipping on stage like at 6:19. Su loses control momentarily and even her face show worry, but she recovers so fast and pulls it off so professionally that you don't even notice it.
They slipped many times in this performance but they continued to fight. They're such a troopers.

This time, 'ears' was the key word, haha. Please take care of your ears. Su- was 18 at that time, what a stage presence! And she communicated with the crowd in a dignified manner, putting off her one ear moniter. She was moved by them who waited for BABBYMETAL in the heavy rain...
Since their early days, BM has been actively participating in domestic music festivals, and as you said, they have been competing there by singing, dancing, and playing (playing is after Kami Band appeared) only without any special stagings. So I could say they are the real deal. I guess this is the point they are definitely different from existing Japanese J-pop idols. They are not fazed at all if the programs are not going well or if there are some kind of troubles. Well, it can not help the sound quality is not so good, haha.Thank you from Japan!

Another great Babymetal review, enjoyed it as always. This concert really put BM on the world stage in terms of live shows, not being in Japan the girls were very nervous and worried how fans would react to them. The first couple songs fans were not real sure what to think(like most of us that first saw BM), but by the end of their set the fans chanted for more and loved them! I know BM had to feel on top of the world after that show, so proud of them for being so different and brave. It still impresses me so much how Su can command a crowd at that show, in that weather, being that nervous, and still being so young, blows me away. Oh and yes, BOH is so great, I really miss seeing him on stage with BM. Thanks again David as I continue to watch your BM video journey, enjoying it! 🦊🤘

Most commenters have already said what I wanted to say. Just a last thing about the rain. Can you imagine how nervouse Amuse would have been about the rain. These 3 girls and to lessser extent the Kami band are worth millions to Amuse and I do not think they would be amused at the risks involved, especially to the girls and in particular Sue. Not only the risk of being zapped, but also of slips and falls (although these girls are so good they could proberly dance on ice), but also catching a cold or worse, very risky for Sue. I do not know wether Amuse treats the girls as people or a product but either way they would want to protect them as much as they can.

    • @CHRISCONTEPSS
      @CHRISCONTEPSS 2 года назад +4

Exactly. . .Many people think they are treated poorly as disposable "idols" as this is apparently prevalent in Japan. I assure you this product is not disposable to the company. I have been told that amuse has a very good reputation as far as treatment of their artists. They have both been through multiple contracts now and most likely have their own representation. I read Su is estimated to be over 4mil usd a year and Moa in excess of 2mil usd. I don't know how reliable that is, but I would not be surprised if that is a low estimate.
I can't imagine they would still be doing this after so many years if they were being mistreated. I think amuse knows they could both just walk across the street and get multimillion dollar contracts for just modeling clothes and cosmetics . . . without singing or dancing at all . . lol . . .but in the end. . .OTFGK! 🤘🦊🤘

I totally agree, you gotta love BOH! He's awesome! There's a few points that always strike me when watching this performance, even though I have seen it countless times:
    I find it really touching when Su says "Let us hear your voice" and takes out her ear-piece. Especially since she uses singular, which makes it feel like she regards the crowd as one voice (even though I know that it's probably just because there is no concept of singular and plural in Japanese). Her "hashire" at the end also still gives me shivers. The adlib interlude in the middle contains two pretty rare moments for Su: a flat note and noticeable vibrato;
It's also worth noting that Moa and Yui don't hesitate to lie down on the soaked floor. The rain is of course even more of a factor when you are doing a dance choreography.

Thanks for sharing this David, I know you got a blocked on your first Karate MV reaction, that's why Idk which score you gave them and your review about them, but is all good, it seems you liked the song and you probably got all the info about it.
There's a funny picture of KobaMetal cleaning the stage before the performance, the rain was heavy 🧹
And there's no doubt this was a hard and risky performance on the stage with those conditions but our girls like it and feel this as a natural element or effect to add more epicness to the show. Also that SuMetal improvisation is something she does mainly during this song, and that crowd control certainly can put you in awe, the leadership is there, that's why we call her our queen. ❤️
KobaMetal said they have _"theatrical performance"_ with all stage production, pyro, lights, cryo and everything to backing up the show and make them more spectacular, and then have the _"strong performance"_ with nothing but their own talent on stage and the raw sound, just them and the crowd.
So it's all good with that score, don't worry about it, we know is really great score and what really is important is your vision about this. Of course shout-out to Kami Band and BOH almost stealing the show, I said this many times but he reminds of Flea from RHCP, whom went on tour with them btw you can find a fancam of BM and RHCP performing together a Judas Priest cover on a special day for SuMetal.
And btw, yesterday was YuiMetal birthday our tomato princess and angel of dance, next July 4 is MoaMetal birthday so we hope you can watch something special from her although I know you have a busy agenda.

Yeah while this performance take out all of their impressive stage productions and not their home crowd (if you saw a Japanese festival with their home crowd on day light like this... man it's nut, like 100% of the crowd participate in every single things of the performance, not just like half of them there), but this definitely show their true talent and professionalism and that they can do well and give out 100% even in harsh conditions.
They were not only jumping on that wet stage, they lay down on it, not miss a single choreo except Su stood up to hype up the crowd, I think one thing that can be take in account to make her words so inspirational to the crowd is they and the band both struggle through this rain, a bad time but they get through doing this together - the crowd waiting for them in the rain moved her and she send it back to the crowd - that's the touchy thing about this performance and make it so special for a lot of BM fans

Good reaction, review and analysis again. autohmae has already explained how the Download organiser had stated in 2014 that BABYMETAL were, in his eyes, a "Japanese novelty fad" and they would never play there ... then in 2015 DragonForce, who were going to be playing with BABYMETAL at an awards show in London not long after, smuggled them in and invited them on stage during their own set to play 'Gimme Chocolate' with them.
The crowd that gathered for that after word got out exceeded the boundaries of the stage they were playing.
Come 2016 and here were BABYMETAL, playing Download, their own set on the main stage.
The rain was described as "Biblical" that year. Their set was delayed by 40 minutes while the equipment was covered and water was swept off the stage (there is a photo of their producer out there with a broom), but the crowd stayed on and waited. The girls went out warning each other to be careful if they slipped on the wet stage - and they performed all the choreo for all the songs.

Thanks for this reaction. Babymetal again showing what they can do with just them on stage. No big pyro, etc.
It's funny you said the pull with the festival people. Because Babymetal performed at this festival the year before in 2015, but as a guest of Dragonforce.
This was after the festival promoter on Twitter had said in 2014:
"There's a time & a place for Baby Metal. Each to their own but Download Festival is not it"
"Yep, it's a no from me…another Japanese novelty fad. It works in their homeland & I have big respect for that"
"For all the wrong reasons, like they did for PSY"
But in 2015 Dragonforce, who have pull with the festival, invited Babymetal on stage with them perform one of Babymetal's song during their own set.
Now some think it's a bit of a publicity stunt but these are the tweets from the festival promoter during that 2015 show:
"Just seen Baby Metal hanging around backstage at Download?? What is going on??"
    "Yes I did and I didn't"
The crowd grew larger at the Dragonforce gig and oddly enough... Babymetal was on the mainstage in 2016 ! After their second album release which charted even higher than their 2014 album. It was a record: highest-charting Japanese band in the UK ever.
BOH, also known at times among fans as 'bass and dance' :-)
When Babymetal was supposed to perform, a biblical amount of rain came down, the performance and others at the festival were all delayed.
Team Babymetal was on stage covering everything up and making sure everything was tied down, etc.
'Kobametal' was on stage with a mop to clear the stage from puddles, etc. for the girls so they could dance.
What is great is how the audience just waited in the rain, something which was greatly appreciated by team Babymetal.
Some fans see that as something special Kobametal mopping the stage, as he's usually more the behind the scenes directing things when needed.
But I see that as normal, let's all remember he was the one with the girls and one lady in the early days of Babymetal going to festivals, etc. to perform. Nobody else was with them. Even just a backing tape with the music.
Actually, even years later the girls called him 'dad', as in 'on-tour-dad', the lady was the 'on-tour-mom'. The tour mom was there for the make-up, etc.
Babymetal is a bit of an odd group, but they did come from humble beginnings. Not some corporate thing many think.

The things I thought you might comment on but didn't: how Su-metal was actually slipping at 6:20 - hard to notice, not surprised. Or how the girls just dropped down on the wet stage, like true professionals. The other thing which I've always noticed and is something I thought was never easy at 13:47 you can see the girls jump and sing at the same time. I've tried talking and jumping, it's not easy to have such a stable voice that way, but they do.

It often rains at Drownload and, even though they were clearing water from the stage before the performance, Moa and Yui didn't hesitate to lie down in the puddles when their choreography called for it. Their choreographer got the girls to watch some old martial arts movies to help inspire and form the dance moves. Love that Su often tells the audience "Let me hear your voice" and then removes her earpiece to actually hear the crowd's response. And, oddly considering the wet floor, Su usually helps Yui and Moa to their feet, not leaves them on the floor! 🦊🤘🤘🦊

While it does help that British festival-goers are used to the rain, it does put a downer on an audience. However, if you can put on a truly great performance the crowd will not only forget the rain, but experience it as something that enhances the show.

In an interview, the girls said that the best thing about their performances is that they give their energy to the crowd, but in return they get even more. I think this is the secret of crowd control. If you want to get something, you have to give something. Nobody will do something just like that. But if you give people your emotions and energy, people are happy to share them with you.

fun fact : the Kami's band member were told by Koba to play the music as hard and loud as they can and don't hold back because of the girls.
that's because mostly as backing band one of their job is to help the main artist shine on stage but with BABYMETAL it's different story , it's like Kami band and the girls is the two side of the same coin.

I think 8.2 is plenty fair, though I would bump it to 8.5 in honor of Koba’s contribution of helping to try to sweep the water off the stage (despite the rain being pretty relentless at DROWNload). Karate (Babymetal song)
"Karate" is a song by the Japanese heavy metal band Babymetal from their second studio album, Metal Resistance.
    "Karate"
    •Single by: Babymetal.
    •Album: Metal Resistance.
    •Language: Japanese.
    •Released: February 26, 2016.
    •Genre: J-pop, nu metal, metalcore.
    •Length: 4:23.
    •Label:RAL, Sony Music.
    •Songwriter: Yuyoyuppe.
    •Producer: Kobametal.
    •Yuyoyuppe: (arrangement)
    Babymetal singles chronology:-
    •"Gimme Chocolate!!" (2015).
    •"Karate"(2016).
    •"Distortion" (2018).
    Background and release:-
According to Suzuka Nakamoto, "Karate" is reminiscent of the song "Megitsune", which "is popular among international fans. [The song] has not only Babymetal vibes, but also has Japanese elements. Its lyrics portray a strong will to go on, no matter what happens in your life." The song is a nu metal song that contains elements of metalcore. Composed by Yuyoyuppe and arranged under the name Yuppemetal, "Karate" also features djent-like riffs, and a J-pop melody. Loudwire's Graham Hartmann described the song as "incredibly charming. Instrumentally, it’s also heavy as hell. The song’s main riff is way low on the sonic spectrum, chugging away in a no-nonsense djent fashion."
Kikuchi explained that the lyrics are about never giving up and always moving forward, no matter what difficulties need to be endured. Furthermore, Yui Mizuno described how the dance moves were made to help express the message of the song, as most of the lyrics were in Japanese.
    Reception:-
"Karate" received generally positive reviews from music critics. Lars Gotrich of NPR Music described the song as "catchy and grandiose" praising Nakamoto's vocal performance, comparing her to Evanescence lead vocalist Amy Lee. Jon Hadusek from Consequence of Sound called the song, as well as "From Dusk Till Dawn" essential tracks from the album. While reviewing Metal Resistance, Jordan Bassett of NME praised the song, describing it as "fast and furious until jangling, arpeggiated guitar alters the rhythm." Hartmann praised the song's chorus, calling it "one of the catchiest pieces [Babymetal] has crafted to date."
"Karate" peaked at number two on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart on the issue dated March 19, 2016, spending fourteen weeks on the chart. The song debuted at number 24 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100, for the week of March 12, 2016. After the release of the band's second album Metal Resistance, in the week of May 7, 2016, the song peaked at number 17, spending a total of twelve weeks on the chart.
    Live performances:-
"Karate" premiered at Yokohama Arena on December 12, 2015, during the final dates of the Babymetal World Tour 2015, and was added to the setlist of the Babymetal World Tour 2016, performed on the first tour date at Wembley Arena. The song had its first televised performance at TV Asahi's Music Station on April 22, 2016. The song's choreography contained interpolations of karate moves, as shown in the music video.
BABYMETAL WIN FIVE HONORS IN THE 6TH ANNUAL LOUDWIRE MUSIC AWARDS:-
Japanese pop-metal sensation Babymetal are one of the 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards’ biggest winners, as their fans voted them to victory in five separate categories.
The teen trio and their phenomenal backing musicians have rocketed to the top of the metal world, and in many ways, the worlMd of music. Babymetal’s rabid fanbase filled the Tokyo Dome two nights in a row, so it’s no surprise the band won the Most Devoted Fans award for the second year in a row, this time edging out fellow Japanese act X Japan.
Babymetal’s Metal Resistance album proved the group wouldn’t go out as a one hit wonder. It kicks in hard with “Road of Resistance” and keeps moving with anthemic cuts that are criminally catchy. Metal Resistance won Best Metal Album in our latest awards, while “Karate” took home the trophy for Best Metal Song.
2016 was Babymetal’s year for touring, playing Wembley early in the year, appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, taking over North America, playing the Tokyo Dome and finally supporting Red Hot Chili Peppers in the UK. For Babymetal’s accomplishments, they’ve been voted Best Live Act. Finally, frontwoman Su-metal claimed victory in our Rock Goddess of the Year category, beating out beloved singers like Amy Lee and Cristina Scabbia.

The music industry doesn't care if you're 8 or 80, all they care about is whether or not you can produce a top-notch product that will make them money. Just like The Warning, I hold these girls to the exact same standards as I would any adult band. To not hold them to that same standard would be an insult to the girls and all the blood, sweat, and tears they have put into their craft making them what they are today. I'm just as tough on Babymetal as I am on The Warning, and I'm just as tough on them as I am on Rammstein, LOVEBITES, Pearl Jam, Band-Maid, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Nightwish.
