  • I went down to the Logan River after the bit of rain we had, hoping that I would pickup a crab or three. Being a Saturday and beautiful weather I think half of Brisbane decided that they also want to catch some crabs.
I have never seen so many pots out in my limited time fishing in this river - there were boats everywhere. It was like a lottery, hoping that a crab would select your pot to crawl into and yes - you guessed it the crabs stayed away from my pots.
I do not enjoy fishing down the Logan River after a lot of rain.
It brings out all the vermin with catfish and stingrays a plenty. The problem with catching these is the anticipation while trying to land the unknown fish and it is the disappointment when you see the catfish or stingray when they surface.
Ok - you usually know if it is a stingray - when brought to the boat as they tend to just sit on the bottom with little movement but it is the hope that it is a large fish or large flathead that keeps you interested.
During this video the only keepers are bream - I have only shown on video catching 3 bream but I did talk about how I fish for bream using bread.
A brief explanation is as follows if my explanation on the video is confusing.
    1. I use a number 5 sinker with swivel and a leader of approximately 350 - 400mm long.
    2. I fish with 3 x number 1 long shank hooks. One tied off and the other two running free on the leader.
    3. The bread is the crust section cut into sections about 20 mm long
    4. The hook is threaded through the crust and back to secure the bait. I do this with the 3 hooks and they form a clump of bait.
    5. By using crust the bread stays on the hooks for 15 minutes plus
    6. Obviously you have to be aware of the bites but the bigger bream usually strike with force.
So - I suggest you give it a try and I am sure you will not be disappointed.

Hi Chris - 5” reel but the only markings on it is Estuary Champion. This used to be my father’s reel - it would have to be close to 60 years old.
