Back in the early PTX days, when money was tight and they were figuring out how to succeed in spite of being screwed over by the record company, Avi and Kevin shared an apartment in LA (where a lot of their earliest videos were shot on their couch). They learned a lot from each other during that time - Kevin taught Avi some beatboxing basics, and Avi gave Kevin singing lessons, to hone his vocal abilities, such as you heard here.
Charlotte I believe Avi could beatbox before he met Kevin going back to his Fermata Nowhere days that was part of the reason behind changing the ICCA category to rythmn section to award it to him.
I first heard PTX on the radio with this song and Little Drummer Boy and eventually realized they were a cappella. Have never found my way out of the rabbit hole. Of course I haven’t tried.
This is not an original, it is an old Christmas song. They way they did it is absolutely stunning. All of their Christmas albums are simply beautiful!!
@@MSKPELLEGRINO oops, I stand corrected. Lyrics in 1984, and music in 1991. Naw, just shows how old I am that I thought it was written much earlier. Thanks for that 🤣.
Written by Mark Lowry in 1984, he said it sat there for 7 years b/c he couldn't find the right music for what he wanted to convey. His version is stunning and one of the view I hold up as on par with PTX. It's definitely a different vibe and much slower, but still moving. There have been at least three reader polls that I know of (one by PBS) to name the favorite version of this song. PTX has won them all. Which, of course to us Pentaholics is not a surprise.
Pentatonix's versions of "Hallelujah" and "Sound of Silence" (my very first video of them that took me down this wonderful rabbit hole) are truly amazing. Talk about goosebumps. You are not doing them justice without watching either or both of these videos. They all are truly gifted singers, but Mitch is my favorite since he sings like an angel without any effort. At least in my opinion.
If you love Christmas music, you need to check out Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy (2nd Grammy win). It's from The Nutcracker Suite. An instrumental piece with no words done by a group with no instruments. It's short but fun. Also check Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Little Drummer Boy, Carol Of The Bells, The First Noel, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The Twelve Days Of Christmas and You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch. PTX makes them new again.
Mary did you know isn't an original by them, but it is a Christmas song. It's by a guy called Mark Lowry, a talent himself. If you're interested, he sang with Voctave and that rendition is stunning. Have fun!
Matt Lowry cowrote the song. A lot of their outdoor videos are located in and around the LA. area. This is in a cave that was used for the batman movie. It's located in Griffith Park, just southwest of the Hollywood sign. Listen to their o come all ye faithful and dance of the sugar plum fairy from the nutcracker . They put their own twist on both of them. Youll love watching Kevin on o come!! You'll love them both! Enjoy your reactions. Thanks
"Mary Did You Know" was first released by Michael English in 1991. There've been several cover versions that have also charted, including this one. I suggest you react to PTX's official music video version of "Hallelujah," and then also to their live concert version. That way you'll see that Scott can go very low and cover bass when Avi sings lead [it's clear on the live version that he's really doing it, it's not a multitrack]. And you'll see that they can pretty much reproduce their studio sound in a live environment. Also... Kevin Olusola is possibly the most talented member of the group. Classic overachiever. He appeared on a show about up-and-coming teenagers at Carnegie Hall, playing the saxophone, when he was 16 or so. That vid is still on YT somewhere. He speaks English, Spanish and Mandarin. Graduated from Berklee College of Music, and has a pre-Med degree from Yale. (He still hasn't gotten around to going to actual Med school. Maybe later.) While on some kind of goodwill assignment in China, he basically invented Celloboxing. And then PTX picked him up in 2011 because they needed at least five members in order to compete on the TV show The Sing-Off. He sometimes plays cello with PTX, such as on "Say Something." And you can see what he's really capable of as a soloist and arranger on his vids on his solo YT channel, such as this one: ruclips.net/video/IGjg193h4Ok/видео.html
Ir you want Christmas music from them check out God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen or Come All Ye Faithful. Also Can't hold us for something different and fun. Their cover of No is outstanding.
Good job on getting to know their names but so you have correct pronunciation Avi is pronounced Ah-vee. Kirstin or Kirstie sounds like thirsty. ;) You are going to love all the Christmas songs they have performed. The First Noel is gorgeous and they take Oh Come O Ye Faithful to a whole different level. Great reaction!
OMG, I listen to Christmas music ALL YEAR LONG! Why limit beautiful music to one time a year? If it makes you FEEL SOMETHING, then by all means listen to it. It’s your life after all❣️. Their version of The First Noel (my favorite Carol) is just stunning❣️. Enjoyed!

Avi's name is pronounced AHH-vee. To learn the young lady's name correctly, I'll give you a famous quote from one of her interviews. "My name is Kirstie. It rhymes with Thirsty. You're thirsty for Kirstie. It's a nickname for Kirstin. It rhymes with Thirstin'. You're thirstin' for Kirstin." When asked in the same interview about people that call her Kristin or Kristie, she responded "They don't matter." Yes, this is a Christmas song, but it's not an original. They have a TON of Christmas music. About half of their albums have been Christmas albums, and they're planning a new one for 2021 as well.
They have either 5 or 6 Christmas albums and are about to come out with another one very soon. They have done a Christmas tour every year until covid hit. They just last night did a performance on Americas Got Talent and they did the prayer with a little girls that was a finalist. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/HLgR3peRxOU/видео.html. Did you watch the introduction of Matt Sallee too?
Great reaction. Thank you. They did an incredible job covering this song so beautifully. Pentatonix has a lot of Christmas music and it is all amazing. You can start reacting now and still not have finished all of their Christmas music by Christmas Day.
I love Christmas anyways but PTX makes Christmas even more special. I try to stay out of stores in general but during Christmas, I love hearing PTX being played store. It’s my fav. I end up singing along and people think I’m insane. But I’m ok with that. :)
I love your passion for music! The Pentatonix reactions are fantastic! Pentatonix has the best Christmas catalog of music around. If you do a Pentatonix Christmas Music run in November/December I AM HERE FOR IT!!! You've been hearing a lot of their covers which are incredible, but they also do original songs as well. For a high energy original, try "Sing", which is basically a love song to their fans. And to see a totally different side of them, try "Thank You". It has instruments - piano and cello. Yes, Kevin our beat boxer here, plays the cello. (Like, he's unbelievably good!) and Scott plays the piano. And coauthored the song. And after 2020 it was the Christmas song we all needed, OMG! I also recommend their cover of Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" - which includes Keven BEAT BOXING AND PLAYING THE CELLO with Lyndsey Stirling on the violin. Oh man! And finally, to branch off, Kevin, the beatboxing cello player has his own side solo career as well - check out his version of "Down"!!! You will not regret it! And Avi Kaplan who left the group, go check out his solo song "Change on the Rise" 😳 It is completely different than Pentatonix, but it will stun you wordless! Thanks again for being here! Love your channel. Peace, and be safe!
This is not an original by PTX. Mark Lowry wrote the lyrics for the song and made a spectacular performance of it with the a capella group Voctave. If you haven't yet caught any of their covers they are fantastic and you should give them a listen 😉
One minor correction: Her name is Kirsten, not Kristen, but she goes by Kirsty (rhymes with "thirsty"). And this is rare for one other thing - Kevin gets to actually sing a verse. Usually he's too busy with beat boxing.
Next oldie and new combo should be “Gangnam Style,” (from the comments on the other track), and one that’ll get big views, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?”
I also want to note that when they turn and the light from the cave opening is in their background, it forms a halo around Kirsten's head from that point on. In your video it starts at 5:04, in the original it's at 1:52.
Here is a long list of recommendations based on my favorites and divided by genre. Christmas(y) songs: - Thank You (an original from last Christmas, written by Scott) - You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch (Matt Sallee takes the lead on this one) - 12 Days of Christmas - Making Christmas (from Nightmare Before Christmas) Originals: - Sing - Happy Now - Love Me When I Don't Covers: - Sound of Silence - Amazing Grace - Favorite Things - Havana - New Rules/Are You That Somebody? Problem Child Showcases: - Aha! - Aha! Singapore Star Vista (Live fan-cam, so the audio isn't the best. Doesn't matter.) - Love Again (original) - Problem (Scott leads, but Mitch has a rap solo) I would also absolutely LOVE to see you do a double-reaction to "Gold" by Kiiara, then their cover of it. It's important to listen to both versions back to back in order to appreciate the technical prowess involved in their performance. (which was shot in one take).
You might consider this a cover, but can you really say that every artist who sings a Christmas song does a cover of it. I believe Kenny Rogers & Wynonna Judd did the original popular version release on this, but PTX's version is a different animal. Both versions are remarkably beautiful experiences, but the a cappella of PTX is more like listening to a dynamic vocal fugue, stacking harmonies and spinning out breathtaking vocals that wrap your whole body in sound and invade your mind lifting you to the heavenlies. You are continuing a conversation from another thread (in fact another video entirely). But it doesn’t matter if there are other Avi supporters here, I’m assuming that all of us love Avi, however, for the link that was posted, it was Matt singing the lyrics, just as he does during a concert, when they’re singing old PTX songs - including the ones that Avi won a Grammy for! Matt hasn’t taken away his Grammy! In fact he hasn’t taken away ANYTHING from Avi! (If we’re giving away free advice: I would advise you to just focus on the music. There are plenty of Avi fans who are also PTX fans. If you don't want to anger them then I think you better stop this right now. You can be both you know and many people are. That's why this seemed pretty awkward. I wasn't the first to notice it. It was sent to me by a couple of people. People are afraid to do this themselves because they get attacked.
@@gailseatonhumbert9199 did you even LOOK at the link? It’s the animated Christmas short that they did a couple of years ago. Those songs (skits) were recorded by the current PTX.
I’m not sure that you’re following the discussion. In fact I KNOW that you’re not, because I’m a Pentaholic - to me that means that I love all things Pentatonix which includes BOTH Avi AND Matt.
We can’t discuss things as fact, which we have no insight on, and I KNOW for a fact that you are not in their inner circle. Neither am I).
@@caroleceres stop now.
You may enjoy PTX's work with Todrick Hall...Wizard of ahhh's

Or is it Velcro?
Your pants are probably a towel precariously clinging to your upper thighs with Snoopy boxer underwear on full display.
Why clown yourself like this?
It’s embarrassing.
