      I hope 3D printers can do this in my lifetime, or at least make the cup, and then make the tea as a different printed thing. Right now, industrial 3D printers can make useful complex things, but home 3D printers can only make cheap plastic toys and trinkets. But like all technology, what's only available to industry now will gradually make its way into the home.

      Not yet, but theoretically, you could - in principle - print a 3D printer that would need to be assembled (in order to fit inside the one that printed it). EDIT: Or just have _one_ big 3D printer, printing lots of slightly smaller 3D printers (one at a time).
      Of course, this could be decades (years? centuries? who knows?) in the future, as you can imagine.

    Wait...does that mean in the future instead of cloning, it is entirely possible to 3d print a duplicate me in the other end of the planet and break down the current me, and that 3d printer can be called a Teleporter?

    • @batlethfury
      @batlethfury 10 лет назад +12

      Well, the complicated part would be keeping the exact same consciousness and memories in the clone from the original. What's the point of having a clone who doesn't know who he is etc. Also, your consciousness would probably not be retained in the clone, so essentially, you would die, but your clone (who has the same memories but is a different individual) would survive. Kind of like regeneration in doctor who, but you keep the same body.

    • @FantasyBlade
      @FantasyBlade 10 лет назад +6

      batlethfury Well, I will assume if the printing and information is 100% accurate, the synapses in the brain will connect exactly the way it is supposed to and you will remember exactly who you are and what you "teleported" to do. However, that is still trillions of cells to print so yeah it is complicated >.>

    • @batlethfury
      @batlethfury 10 лет назад

      True, but that shouldn't change your experience considerably. I mean, unless it was an extremely traumatic experience, the new memories shouldn't affect the judgement of your clone, and you would still make the same decisions in the same situation. I think the real question though, would be is your clone "you". I mean, he might be identical to you in every way, but if you died, would you still be alive in the clone?

    • @kinectman
      @kinectman 10 лет назад +4

      Bitcoin is simple. It's an invisible currency that is mainly used in areas like the Dark/Deep/Secret web. When you're buying something you don't want people to see/know (the government) then you use this currency to secretly buy your item and it is secretly delivered to you.

      Chris Mills How is it made? Mining in computer, trying to solve some equation?? So, if my computer solves a math problem, it generates some bitcoin...? Sounded totally dumb. That part I don't understand.

    • @kinectman
      @kinectman 10 лет назад

      Miners get in groups called pools because it's faster to solve these equations together and their computers GPU's solve simple equations which solve larger equations and they all get a share of these bitcoins. They solve these maths equations because the bitcoin community doesn't have a government that can produce the paper money so the get people to make the bitcoins by solving the equations. They get into groups and use their GPU's because not everyone can afford processors that are built for Bitcoins.
      Someone can correct me as I may be wrong.

    • @BikramAgarwal
      @BikramAgarwal 10 лет назад

      Yes, I've heard this before; but what does that mean? Solve equation to create bitcoin..?? Like, at the beginning, one rich person created million bitcoins but buried them under very complex math equation and challenged the world to solve it? Now whoever solves any part of it, can recover whichever bitcoin was hidden there? Something like that? If not, how does solving math "Creates" bitcoin?

    So if we can print new organs, then we do not die because of organ failure. Then the only way to die is because of a disease. But we can also (probably) stop that in the future. Does that make us immortal?
    (Maybe when brain cells die, the brain stops sending signals to body parts so it'll die. I don't know if we could ever repair brains because memories and so are super complicated..)

    • @KuraIthys
      @KuraIthys 10 лет назад +9

      Well, it seems based on recent experiments you can transplant new brain cells, and the brain as a whole will work out what to do with them (even when the cells are originally from a different species). There's a few awkward hurdles, but it does seem to be possible in principle. However, while this means damaged brains could be restored to a functioning state, whatever was specifically stored in the parts that required replacing would be gone forever.
      (Just as I can replace the hard drive in my computer if it breaks, and can reinstall software, but cannot, unless I prepare for it before the disk is broken, replace the actual content of the drive exactly.) -
      So... If you were to keep replacing brain cells with new ones, you might be able to keep someone alive a long, long time. But depending on how long you keep doing this, and the specifics of how memories are stored, this person may over time gradually forget things they once knew, as more and more cells get replaced. (It isn't quite that simple, because a large number of cells are involved in any given thing a brain does, and so if some of them are replaced, but not others, the replacements may be able to maintain enough of the relevant function/memory to compensate for the remaining older cells dying, and in turn pass on the same to even newer cells.)
      Anyway, I wouldn't rule out entirely the prospect of replacing parts of the brain. It's just that it's more likely to involve introducing large numbers of new individual cells rather than treating it like an organ transplant...

    • @91765243wise
      @91765243wise 10 лет назад

      biological immortality isn't that simple, it is possible only with multiple factors, one of which is in our genetics which makes cells somatic (definitive number of reproduction times) and eventually die. studies into biologically immortal species such as crocodiles, lobsters and the hydra are promising and revealing a lot about the subject, i suggest you go look it up yourself

    • @AnimilesYT
      @AnimilesYT 10 лет назад +1

      KuraIthys Hey, I just say a video by asapscience and they said that brain cells are all replaced every once in a while. If the body can do it, then why can't humans do that and make people immortal? The only thing that might be hard to fix are the mutations in our DNA.
      Maybe we can do something about the times a cell can reproduce. The ends of a chromosome get shorter every time. so when the not-effective part of a chromosome is gone, then a cell can't reproduce. If we extend this, then that problem is solved. immortality could be real soon :)

    I don't remember what it was called, or the exact details of it, but in the "Ring World" series by Larry Niven, they had a machine that would heal you. Basically, you'd throw organic matter in the machine, then climb into the healing chamber, and it would use the organic matter to replace and repair broken parts. Kind of like what you were talking about with bio-ink.

    I'm very happy that this technology is being used in medicine, but it also really concerns me. Like all technology, it can be used for good or evil. I know they can already make 3D printed guns, no numbers and untraceable, but where does it stop? Can you 3D print explosives? Nuclear materials? And if not now, how long before someone figures out a way to do it?
    Exciting and scary at the same time. Now let's just hope humanity can behave itself lol.

    • @thatotherguy27
      @thatotherguy27 9 лет назад +11

      For any home-level 3D printer, making the most important parts of a gun is not a good idea. It might work once. Emphasis on "might" and "once".
      As for printing explosives and nuclear materials, you can only get out of the printer what you feed it. Mine uses plastic, so I won't be printing any uranium or TNT. Even as a bomb casing, the material isn't great for the sorts of things you would want a bomb casing to do.
      The limitations are pretty evident when you own one.

      It costs millions of dollars to buy a 3D printer that can print a gun that works, but these guns still need to have metal parts to hold it together and keep it from backfiring on you. So, would you rather spend 1 million dollars and maybe or maybe not getting caught with a gun on an airplane while you'll still get arrested afterwards? Or would you want to not spend a million dollars and not kill anyone AND not get arrested. So even thought its possible, it may not be desirable.

    Yes, it is a cool technology, but it gets way overestimated lately. Little wonder, with all the media coverage it gets and all those hillybillies predicting the end of all order (as with about anything).
    Fact: Traditional manufacturing won´t go away, 3D printing only helps to quickly make models and prototypes for small iteration, but I see little use of it in mass production. Why? Because it is cheaper to mill/bend/weld/whatever a piece out of raw material rather than use tons of expensive fluids to slowly progress a piece out of thin air and bake it into solid shape.

      Agreed. Money will cease to be a meaningful concept when you can 3D print food, clothing, money, pharmaceuticals, or any other object at human using raw materials. In the future the only items that will have intrinsic value will be 3D printers and raw materials. The only wealthy class that will remain will be those who own large stockpiles of raw materials - if I had to guess I'd say the "richest" among us will be those who own garbage dumps.

    I don't think people realize how revolutionary this concept is. You can essentially DOWNLOAD 3D objects now. that's incredible. and they've already figure out how to use it on a molecular level?? given the resources, you could technically build anything. unless I'm missing some glaring flaw, I see no reason why we won't all be carrying portable 3D printers some time in the future. scary stuff

    • @Fenzaz

    • @Afroctopus
      @Afroctopus 10 лет назад

      as time goes on, the tech will undoubtedly advance and get cheaper and more efficient (look at computers within the last 10 years). having one machine makes a thing versus multiple machines is by definition more efficient, so I don't think that'll be an issue. but as fenzaz said I forgot about the issue of storage. instead of being portable, 3D printers'll probably be household appliances unless we come up with some super-compact printing material that we could carry around.

    Wherever the light goes, darkness has already been there

    • @PerfectChaosZeta
      @PerfectChaosZeta 10 лет назад +6

      Darkness isn't a thing. It's the absence of light, it's the lack of a thing. Ergo, darkness does not have speed, because it is not a thing, it is a concept. Light, is made up of photons; Visible light is merely electromagnetic radiation whose frequency is within a certain range that our eyes can detect. It has a speed, because it is a thing. It's like asking what's faster, a race car or sorrow/joy/funk, etc.
      Therefore, the question is highly unscientific and I personally would say it's a poor fit for asap science. Sorry bro.

    As an artist, I regularly use 3D printing. It is one of my favorite mediums to work in. My only gripes as of yet are that it can be REALLY difficult to design for 3D printing sometimes and it can be VERY pricey, especially with larger items.
    Also, I'm holding my breath for a hi-res, full color, sturdy, and easy to design for polymer- that is my 3D printing dream right there. :P

  • @AGSmoothies
    @AGSmoothies 10 лет назад +6

    Like the narrator pointed out, I can see people 3D-printing some spare organs, cells, and skin, so when something happens and the person is dying, they can use the spare body parts to bring that person back to life. But I bet you it'll take a century before the procedure becomes cheap enough to be used among middle-class people, because such advanced medical technology can be expensive. I can imagine people using it as a cure for cancer (If we just take out all the cancer-infected blood and cancer-infected organs, then replace it with your healthy spare ones, your cancer-free, right? It should work for most people.) and other things we don't have a cure for if we can't make a vaccine for it.

      ofirharlev You are right. A lot more logic and science is being used in our society than a century ago. For example, the sexist generation of the 1500's would have never taken the time to question who was responsible for the gender of the child. They always assumed it was the girl. But research has shown it's the male who determines the gender. And we've learned a lot more about autism then we knew 50 years ago.
