- We met Richard Kelly, cursed director of one of the cult films of the 2000's. Donnie Darko comes back today on sceens in restored version and "director's cut".
I prefer the theatrical cut because it's more cryptic and I can't wait to see a new film from him because I've loved all of them so far.
The theatrical cut is in my top five movies of all time; a bona fide masterpiece. Theres nothing else quite like it. I was so excited to see the directors cut although I agree; everything that was left open to interpretation before was now spelled out, the majesty and self-reflection replaced with video game like antics. It seems the same talented editors (Sam Bauer; Eric Strand) cut both, but for me the leaner version wins every time. I wonder why Richard Kelly felt the need for this expansive, more on-the-nose version.
@@jacobharmer4663 I couldn't of said it better myself, I think maybe he was curious to see if what he'd planned was as good as what he'd worked with. It's a bit like any artistic endevour they rarely turn out how you plan them and there's always that question, which would have been better?

I'm really starving here lately, movie wise.. and Southland Tales is one of my favourites of the last 2 decades, so much fun and I consider R.K. one of the most talented directors of his generation, with a complex and unique style. Can't wait to watch what he comes up with next.

Such a delight to see Richard still around after all this time. DD is a treasure, a rare find and should be protected. Hands off RK's treasure. They should have had a 20th anniversary reunion 💜

@@RetroExhibitCollective he actually filmed it when Jake was 19. It came out the year later just after 9/11 that's why it didn't do well 1st time around.

@@RetroExhibitCollective ok Victor I get where you're coming from. You mean the release date October 2001. I'm thinking of when they filmed it. I vagely remember watching a huge b-roll where they were near to wrapping up filming and they brought out a huge birthday cake for Jake on his 20th birthday (I think it was Jimmy Fallon's not yet wife) Jake is 40 end of this year (crazy to believe he's still a big cute kid) so a reunion of that is what I'm talking about not the release date as it was a much happier time. I can tell you love the film as much as me. It resonates and distubs and is timeless 👌🏽😎💜

A nice video, I have just seen Donnie Darko and am very intrigued.
If he's saying that he will never see "S. Darko," I think he should so that he can tell the fans of the original whether the sequel is worthy or not.

Dont bother with the theatrical. Start with the Director’s Cut. The theatrical cut is simply unfinished.
I disagree, i strongly prefer the theatrical cut. The Director's cut overexplains things in a very heavy handed manner which takes away a lot of the mystique. Plus the music choices are just better in the theatrical imo. Why do you say that it is unfinished?
leonthesleepy This is probably a result of seeing the director’s cut first. I’ll pick two examples. 1) It cuts out important moments with the family, especially Donnie’s heart-to-heart with his Dad.
2) The truncating of the Jim Cunningham seminar completely ruins the point of the scene for the sake of reaching a runtime. This link below shows how the scene should function. In the theatrical, all Cunningham’s answers are cut out, so when Donnie says “that’s the worst advice I’ve ever heard,” we don’t know what advice he’s referencing. There are just so many things like that in the movie that makes it seem rushed. That’s why I’m not calling it bad, but unfinished.

I prefer the Director's cut, but the theatrical cut has a special place in my heart since it was the first one I saw. I really love the scene in the Director's cut where Donnie's father (Holmes Osborne) is having a heart to heart with him. I feel like his character deserved more time, and the Director's provides that. There is something very genuine about Holmes Osborne's acting and demeanor on screen.
Wasted potential.
