  • Our good friends at Old Yankee Speed have taken the guess work out of the Model A Flathead V8 Conversion. They sell all the necessary brackets and mounts to fully swap a Flathead into your Model A Chassis. The motor and trans mount kit require a few holes to be drilled into the chassis, and the center cross member will require some trimming. The kit is as simple as it gets and made the install of the blown flathead a breeze. Matt usually spends multiple days getting the mounts fabricated and installing and engine. Matt and Steve installed the kit and engine in less than a day!

    That kit looks killer! Old Yankee Speed co makes some nice stuff! Over the years I've made all my mounts by cutting them out of 2x3 rectangular tubing then shaping them which takes a bit of time. I may just pick up a set of the front mounts to get me a head quicker. I'm interested to see how the pedal kit works out! Thanks for showing these kits!

    Hey Matt, I have been thinking about building exactly what your doing with this truck for some time now. I’m out in New Tripoli and that would just be perfect to bomb around in on the back roads here. Super basic and straight forward. I take my trash to a public dump every Saturday with my dog and some local dude shows up in a stock 28 or 9 roadster pick up once in a while. When I watched the Texas clean out video I thought what an awesome shop truck that would be. You fellas got it going on. Happy Easter

Next time I built one I bought a chop saw that really sped up the process and made a neater race car. Cheated with some CAE components.

  • @bigbaz1159

    Matt Just a quick piece of advice engine and trans mounting bolts go in from the top with the nut on the
    bottom, That way if it does loose a nut the bolt stays in but slack that way it gives you the chance to find
    just a nut to get it back home as the bolt and damper rubber are not lost also.

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  2 года назад +2

      That is correct for most modern vehicles but is incorrect on early fords. The bolt is larger at the bolt head to fit in the rubber mount and then a cotter pin goes through the nut .. thus the castle nut. Hope that makes sense 👍

    Hello Matt, Thank you for the videos you put out, they are very helpful to me while building my first hot rod. Question: I am building a 29 A Tudor with a stock frame and a 46 flathead and S10 5 speed. Do you think it's necessary to box the frame? The flatty is stock. Thanks.

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  Год назад

      Boxing will make it flex less. The Flathead v8 won’t cause much more flex than stock. All up to what you want to do but it isn’t necessary with a stock Flathead in my opinion.

  • @onlinevacation
    @onlinevacation 2 года назад

    Maybe my standards are too high, But that crossmember seems very cheesy to me. The biggest thing I don't like about it is just how much over slotted the biscuit mount holes are not to mention the fact that where your trans mount falls already has you extended all the way forward of the slot. Also if you just mount those (Hurst copy) motor mounts with the stock shock bolt holes and a bolt in the center, After the car is driven several miles you will start to notice stress cracks in the side of the frame rails across the holes. The way to prevent this is to also bolt the motor mounts to the top of the frame rail and just add a filler 3/16 piece of flat stock to take up the gap between the top rail and the top of the motor mount. Vern tardel addresses this same issue in his book as he also sells these (Old Hurst copy) motor mounts and his price is better than Old Yankee. Truck is coming together well and looking good,

    • @IronTrapGarage
      @IronTrapGarage  2 года назад

      Always a better way to do something. We’re just showing a basic / affordable way to do it. No rules against modifying or adding to this kit. But it’s no doubt it’s a jumpstart on fabricating from scratch.

    • @davidball93
      @davidball93 2 года назад

      The transmission mount crossmember material that’s included in the kit is thicker than the 11 gauge stock Model A crossmember by almost double. Bolt-on boxing plates of the same thickness are also included to increase the strength of the Model A crossmember. The couple hundred pounds pressure of the motor/trans on the transmission mount won't bend or break it. Also… been using these hurst style mounts on dozens of cars have never produced a single crack in the frame using the mounting they’re designed to use. Though I suppose if the frame was sub par or fatigued to it could. But that would be the frame, not mount that’s the issue.

    How about adding 3 - inches on the TRANS BRACKET- SO IT WILL BOLT UP TO THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT HOLES, AND WILL HAVE TO MOVE THE TWO FRONT MOTOR MOUTH TO LINE UP WITH THE ENGINE HOLES,THEN NO NEED TO CUT HOLES IN THE FIREWALL ( OR ADD SHIMS, BECAUSE YOUR TRANS BRACKET TO SHORT TO CONNECT TO TRANS,OR I COULD BE WRONG GUYS? GOOD LUCK !👍👍

      It all lines up without cutting the firewall. Raising the engine up would then cause cutting of the firewall. The small modifications needed are the least of the “evils”.
