    Shawn and Trey, Interesting facts you research and share. The first song is a simple but whimsical and charming Folk song. Going by the lyrics, the person in the story makes a strong case to avoid the draft. Good omments by you guys. The second song has a cool story in the lyrics and the music is easy going with a plesant melody and nice piano and soft brush druming. This is also a charming Folk song. Your comments are accurate to describe the song. You guys chose the second song as the winner of this battle. I agree, I choose the second song as the winner.

      Thanks Poet, wasn't sure if you would know him or not, he seemed to be famous yet not commercially successful if that makes sense haha

      @@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes Shawn, your statement does make sense. An artist can be famous yet not too commercially successful. btw, you always make sense when you speak. Lol God has given you wisdom.

    Small circle of friends is my ring tone. Just to remind me I have a responsibility to be decent. I’m not a very good person so I need a wee reminder occasionally.

    Please give I Guess I'll Have to Do It While I'm Here a listen. Phil was a great writer and there are many songs that deserve to be heard.

    very good to see him getting some attention. Some of his later music moves away from the topical stuff and gets more personal.

    “Changes” is one of the most beautiful songs ever written, IMHO.

    A tribute now to the recently deceased Lincoln Mayorga who contributed on a number of Ochs cuts. Draft Dodger Rag is only relevant now because of the way modern politicians had managed to avoid putting their lives on line in the invasion of Vietnam. No draft anymore, for now. Too many obscure news references to that era. Outside of a Small Circle of Friends has a number of obscure references too but it maybe resonates more in our world a half century later.

    Phil was the person Dylan pretended to be. Phil would cancel a paying gig to appear at an antiwar demonstration.

    A close friend of mine passed away about 3 years ago, and left a huge collection of old fashion LP's. Lot's of bands and songs from the sixties and seventies. Phil Ochs were one of the album's he had. I gave to my son in law who is into music (he is in his early forties) he has an old fashion (new) record player, I don't. So another generation appreciate these songs. Too bad Phil Ochs committed suicide at a young age, he had so much to contribute.

    Enjoyed both of these and will add another vote to 'Circle of Friends' as a worthy winner. Other than the widely-covered Changes (particularly popular with Canadian folkies - Ian and Sylvia, Lightfoot and Uncle Neil have all recorded it) I'm not familiar with Phil's songs, though recognise a few song titles, thanks to Harry Chapin's 'The Parade's Still Passing By', written in tribute to Ochs shortly after his suicide, and with a chorus that name-checks several of his better known tunes, including our winner here. Have to get you to listen to that one someday soon now that ya know who he's singing about!

      Yes heck I hadn't even heard of Ochs until last month, now I find out the great Chapin wrote a song about him! Thanks as always JSB!

    Small Circle of Friends is fantastic, Lincoln Mayorga is perfect on piano on that track, Lincoln also kills it on songs like The Party and I’ve Had Her.
    I highly recommend checking out Phil Ochs in Concert and Rehearsals for Retirement for some of his absolute best songwriting.
    also thank you for pronouncing his name right!!!

    Hey please don't be offended but I think that is Woody Guthrie not Phil Oches I love your trying to do your channel but both of those artists deserve to be shown for who the are

      Woody Guthrie also had very biting political commentary, but that doesn't detract from how poignant Ochs' songwriting was. For some very blatant examples of this, check out Here's To the State of Mississippi, We're the Cops of the World, and Love Me I'm a Liberal (written from the socialist side of mocking them, not the conservative)

    • @hannejeppesen1809
      @hannejeppesen1809 11 месяцев назад

      No that is definitely Phil Ochs. I know Woody Guthries voice. This is Phil at his best.

    • @harlowrioux5790
      @harlowrioux5790 10 месяцев назад

      That is Phil Ochs. Their voices are different. Woody Guthrie would not have written Outside of a Small Circle of Friends or Draft Dodger Rag much less sung as he was in the hospital during the sixties dying from Huntington's disease. He could not talk or move.
