    Played "That Guy" at a large tournament here back in the Fall, he brought a Tank company. 5 Ho-ro self propelled heavy artillery vehicles and 60 inexperienced spear troops. Most broken thing I have seen in Bolt Action. Most standard lists dont have the firepower to deal with both. Even worse, only 14 Ho-Ros were ever built and were never used in combat. Sure the spear dudes drop like flies, but you are dealing with 5 heavy artillery pieces too and you cannot pin the spear guys down.

    I have found knee mortars to be very useful for Japanese banzai, but not as damage dealers. Use them to spam smoke. Ideally try to screen your units from thier heavy fire or block off a whole flank allowing you to concentrate on half if your oppanant army. I am experimenting with the right number of knee mortars still but 1 squad of grenadiers with three has been invaluable so far

    Tactics to beat the Japanese... Hold back, use the overwatch order when ever it looks like you're going to be the victim of a banzai charge. Better to have multiple sources of overwatch, for example with my US Army force I have a special rule that allows me to take multiple medium machine guns, typically they're not very point efficient (very rare in bolt action) but I like to take three of them at inexperienced level. This is the perfect sort of unit to keep back, use its range, so when that banzai charge comes in two or three sources of fire hit them in the open. Alternatively double light machine gun squads dug into hardcover are pretty good as well.
    High explosive is universally powerful but also very potent against thin Japanese armour and blobs of infantry, so motorised artillery, regular artillery, and mortars are essential for whittling down the Imperial horde. Always take spotters on your artillery pieces. If Mr Mordian glory wants to hide his assault troops in hardcover near an objective, have multiple sources of indirect fire to blow them to pieces.
    A gamy tactic is using forward deploying troops to mess with banzai orders, units like snipers, scouts, or russian anti-tank teams. Almost every army has something that can do this. The Japanese can only use the banzai move rule as long as it's against the closest enemy unit, if that unit is hiding in a tower in the middle of the board the japs have to do take order tests like anybody else if they want to attack your main lines.

      Other thing is flamethrowers at least vehicle wise as my OT-34/85 destroyed 2 squads with the hull flamethrower and a HE round from it's 85mm. Lets just say after that I was able to use the tank as a sort of heavy bunker right at the objective marker and be able to send my veteran assault engineers to hold it. I was able to hold 2 of the three objectives the one I lost was when the Japanese player was able to lob 2 heavy artillery rounds in and so take out my 2 rifle squads there and have it open for his squads to come in.

    • @dannyhalas9408
      @dannyhalas9408 2 года назад

      @@ChrisS-fh7zt I have mixed luck with flamethrowers in BA, the amount of times I wiff and then just run out of fuel! But I reckon they've a physiological effect way above the actual damage they do. Everyone remembers that one game your flame thrower team toasted 30 guys, but not the following five when they do dick all.
      How many points was the game? A OT-34/85 is a big chunk of points, it's nice when expensive armour can win a game.

    • @ChrisS-fh7zt
      @ChrisS-fh7zt 2 года назад

      @@dannyhalas9408 A OT-34/85 is 275 points Regular that is cheaper than my other 2 tanks that I got for my Soviets the KV-2 is 345 points and my KV-8 is 375 points Regular. But what makes Flamers devastating is that if a unit that gets hit by them fail their morale roll they are gone doesn't matter if they are fanatics or not. Hence why I try to at least send enough pins out so as to have a high chance of that happening. The squad that I hit with the flamethrower had 3 pins and the one with HE had 4 and both being regular they had to roll a really low number. The 4 one was a roll of 5 and the 3 one was a roll of 6 to pass also I took half his number down with the 85mm cannon hit.
      This is why I prefer vehicle flamethrowers over infantry as they sort of able to at least shrug off small arms fire plus they have an extra 6 inch reach over their infantry counterparts.

    Longbeard moment… don’t play Bolt Action but the automatic double ones of the Banzai charge harkens back to the old Insane Bravery (Double 1’s) and Craven Cowardice (Double 6s on a morale test where you had to roll under your Ld characteristic) rules from 40k 2nd Edition. Which make sense as you said the Warlord guys were old GW guys.

    you should look into The Finnish army. lots of ambush tactics and instead of boshito, the fins use Sisu. The finnish can advance and if they didn't shoot turn there dice to ambush( units that have the master hunt rule, also any unit with a rife, including sniper rifle + 1 to hit when using ambush) (its also a very infantry heavy army, lots of small arms and few field guns. I think they only have like 3 tanks that aren't captured tech.)

    Just commenting loads to help the algorithm so he makes more... But a taking a 1st lieutenant as a Japanese player seems strange, the 2+ bonus to order checks is wasted when you can banzai up the board, is 75pts really worth it for an extra snap too?
    The Germans get a free snap too baked in and I don't find it that important when I play them, but I prefer a more reactive play style.
