I accidentally broke off a stem of one of my dahlias, stuck in the ground/ potting soil and was amazed when it started growing. Who knew? Now we all know thank you Erin🌷💚🙃

I have watched so many of your dahlia videos and I can't thank you enough. I went to a farm last year and we were able to cut our own bouquet. The dahlia are beautiful but I was overwhelmed before. Thanks to your videos I purchased 2 tubers and will give them a try this year
This is super helpful. I ordered my first sets of dahlia tubers. I only ordered a few so that if I fail, I fail small-scale lol.

Yes I am. It's a very satisfying procedure and the flowers from cuttings are stronger, bigger and brighter. It also keeps my hands off sowing seeds too early. 😉
Hi Erin! Yes I'm starting cuttings too like you are!🌸🌸 Last year I did it by trimming the top of my sprouting plants. A few cuttings took but most did not. This way looks alot more successful 🙌

I was thinking I could buy a couple of dahlia plants and then take cuttings from them. Makes them much more worth the money for the initial plant. Very exciting.
I am taking cuttings now . First year having a go. TY Erin :) I lose a lot of tubers to rotting so taking cutting is a good back up for me.
Erin, when I think back to when I was a child, I remember my mom doing something like this with dahlias and also with sweet potatoes. I've never tried it with dahlias but if I can find some tubers locally I'll definitely give it a shot this year! Thank you, and enjoy your Sunday.

I’ve never grown dahlias so would love to get a few this year. Love the tips for FREE plants!! Is there a rule of thumb for whether or not to use a dome with other seeds or cuttings? I noticed some of my vermiculite has turned green.

I think it depends where you are. There’s still time in my zone 5 to start tubers for cuttings but yes, in warmer areas you’ll be looking at later flowers for dahlias from cuttings. They’ll still do their thing, but it will take a little longer to get them there.
I'm binge watching your videos- I love them! But my question is do the tubers produce another set of cuttings? And/or do you keep talking cuttings until the tubers are ready to plant in the ground?

Thanks, very informative! Do you get blooming plants from those cuttings the very same season? Id like to try take cuttings now (end of may) from an exceptionally blooming dahlia i have in the ground (single flower dahlia) , would it grow to bloom this summer or is it too late? Thanks
Hi Erin thank you for this video. Will these cuttings make new tubers during the season? Or is it more like a annual plant now?
They should form tubers, however I grew some that I purchased as cuttings last years and only one out of three produced tubers.
@@TheImpatientGardener So Mother Nature decides.. Still fun to try this with the shriveled ones that come out of winter storage.
Do you need to leave at least one growth point on each tuber to keep the original viable?

How long will it take to get flowers from these cuttings? I always thought that the tuber is necessary?
I've never really got this. Why not just plant the tuber - isn't there only one eye or growing point per tuber, which you remove? I see the dahlia fanciers and show growers doing this in England too. Great video ...
New shoots tend to grow from the cut, so you're not sacrificing anything. As for why people taking cuttings it's usually so they increase the number of tubers they have since each cutting should produce a new tuber.
So you can plant the original tuber AND get tubers from the cuttings, so it's a win win situation.

They were under grow lights.
@@TheImpatientGardener thanks for the feedback-I haven’t gotten a light system yet, just finished 19 winter sowing containers, 9 for sweet peas :), and calendula, nicotiana and artichokes in the rest, I’ll do some indoor sowing using my window sills , mid April for zinnias and more nicotiana types and marigolds.

Will these form roots then form that brown bulb thing in the ground because I thought you needed the bulb part?
They will definitely form roots and bloom, and they should form tubers that you can then life and save (in zone 7 and lower) or leave in the ground for next year (zone 8 and up). I say "should" because I grew some lovely plants that I purchased as rooted cuttings last year and out of three of them, only one formed a tuber.

How long should it take for sprouts to come up? I overwintered mine from last year, and covered with a bit of soil - no signs of life so far, and it has been 2 weeks. When should I cut my losses and buy some new ones?
It depends a lot on the variety. Some take a few days, some take three weeks. But if your tubers were healthy and the eyes are intact there’s no reason why they wouldn’t grow.
When do the plants grown from cuttings tend to bloom as compared to the ones grown from tubers?
If you do it early enough it should be the same time. It will be interesting to compare when these bloom compared to the same variety planted from tubers.
My beautiful dalia plant got hit so bad by a storm and I tried to put a cutting in water..didn't work so that's why I'm here 😅
Silly question maybe: is the entire bulb made of stem cells? Why do we include the bulb?

@@tamararobinson2069 I will, thanks. I usually try to watch at least one of each variety of video, but I don’t remember if I’ve ever paid close attention to the bulbs since I’m pretty unexotic in my bulb choice. :)
Did dahlia come in trailing? My small yellow flower dahlias tend to bend before i even stake them
Have you pinched them? If not, try. That way they bush out (more flowers) but more importantly bushing out provides way more balance to the stem.
@@melissasullivan1658 i did earlier... it's like 4 or 5 inch and it bend...still new in growth and i thoughts it doesn't need any staking yet

@@melissasullivan1658 not sun,it stay in direct sun for more than 10 hr.i ve try to put in shade before...they still bend. I've try to cut and propagate from cuttings....it grow and become like that also... That's why i wonder did dahlia trails too?

Yes they should, although I had two last year that didn't, despite becoming great big plants and blooming like crazy.

Why not just plant the tuber? What is the advantage of doing this vs, planting the tubers?
It’s a good question. The short answer is more plants. I’ll probably get at least three cuttings from each tuber, but if I planted that tuber I’d only have one plant. There is also a lot of mention of plants grown from cuttings being stronger than those grown from tubers. I can’t find any hard data to back that up and haven’t observed close enough to have an opinion.
