Much love from New Zealand, your channel has answered a lot of questions of why I felt so uncomfortable about the content of a lot of Hollywood film. I'm of Maori decent, indigenous to nz, and I see a lot of parallels in nz film. Keep dropping that knowledge.. Kia ora!

Thank you Reelblack for this wonderful content. Brother Woods is a real gem. He exposes the racism in American film and deconstructs Black film representation like no one else. He supports his analysis with the empirical evidence of actual footage from films I never knew existed or heard about. Imagine, someone actually wrote dialog such as:"I've been a good master and you've been good slaves" Wow, OMG, what arrogant BS. Now I know about the 3D effect, the Slap, Film Tricknology and a new concept:"circumscribed historicity". What I love about Brother Woods is his attempt to present the facts in a balanced fashion. It is what it is. I don't hear him pointing fingers in a generalized "racial" way. If some Whites are to blame, he singles them out. And if some Blacks are at fault, he singles them out. This is one of the main reasons why I love his analysis. He calls a spade a spade. One of the reasons I subscribed to your great channel is because someone told me to check out the Professor. Now I can't wait to see what he will reveal next. As I have posted once before--please keep the flow going. BTW, one of the other benefits I enjoy is reading the comments generated by these clips. I learn some interesting things by so many of the smart, thoughtful viewers. The total experience is just educational, entertaining and engaging. A shout out to you, the Professor and all the respectful viewers. Great stuff.

Professor Woods, your analysis explains to a tee the tricknology controversy surrounding the “Birth of a Nation” movie. Now the brother of Nate Parker’s accuser is claiming insensitivity for using a rape in the movie as the catalyst to Nate Turner’s rebellion.
    Here is the quote:
“I think it’s important for people to know Nat Turner’s story. But people should know that Turner did not need rape to justify what he did. Parker and Celestin did not need to add that to Turner’s story to make him more sympathetic.
Fox Searchlight should add a disclaimer indicating that did not happen or remove those scenes altogether.
I have read the piece by Gabrielle Union, a rape survivor who co-stars in the film, in which she argues that the film should be used as an opportunity to reflect on sexual violence. That would allow my sister to be exploited all over again, and it sickens me. I am extremely disappointed in anyone who would use my sister’s story to advance their own fame and fortune.”
Don’t most historical movies take ‘creative liberties’ in the story line? What about all the pictures made about white historical figures that have taken ‘creative liberties so show its white hero in a certain lighter retell his or her story? Action should be taken to have those pictures re-branded with a disclaimer.
Because the film has a rape scene, that automatically makes it about this man’s sister? The woman raped in the movie is white now? These two men who wrote this film are not to have careers or success?
Why is this man and this story getting so much traction? How are we to know that the rape was the reason this woman took her life, leaving a child motherless? I am sorry that this film is taking the heat for its co-writers past. I believe this is the tricknology to bring down a film that shows rebellion against the White man so that it is not seen.
If people do go to see and support the film for its content and much needed story in Black cinema, make sure the stub you get says the correct title. Black films get cheated out of their stub count.

I'm familiar with Burn, Goodbye Uncle Tom, Drum, Django and 12 Years A Slave. The Professor is on point again. What's interesting are the black films released during Obama's Presidency. 12 Years, Django, The Butler and The Help. These films all take place at or before the Civil Rights Movement to a time when blacks were domestics or slaves. It's white nostalgia, harkening to a time when blacks had no power or rights and lived under dehumanizing conditions. I think these films will increase in the post-Obama era along with films of circumscribed historicity.

    • @leoscarpoli1nonly

      Very insightful statement.

    • @cabalofdemons
      @cabalofdemons 8 лет назад +3

***** I wouldn't put Obama and Lee Daniels in the same category. Obama is much more progressive than Daniels. However, I do believe that whites want to relive a bygone era, especially with the Black Lives Matter movement taking full effect.
Whites are slowly becoming a minority in America and it pains many of them. However, there is nothing they can do to change anything. Hence why Hollywood keeps releasing these piece period films.

    • @jokerstorm231
      @jokerstorm231 7 лет назад

This is the stupidest comment I've ever read. Whites don't nostalgia for keeping people in chains, whites don't create these films, it's a tiny minority of ultra rich in Hollywood that produce the same films over and over again and they produce these to keep the hate alive in your race for whites and it's worked *SPECTACULARLY.* What sane white person goes to the movie theater and has nostalgia from seeing Django killing whites en mass? That's a sick person who's not right in the mind.
It's the exact reason Hollywood keeps putting out Holocaust films, to make people feel guilty for years and years and years, it has nothing to do with nostalgia. Hollywood exists only to promote propaganda, that's why films keep bringing back memories of hate, then films about being sick and twisted, films about drinking and living as worthless whores and players, films where people stay stupid and unintelligent. You will see 1 out of 100,000 films glorifying intelligent people, something which you don't aspire to be.

Incorrect, the most depicted era in historical movies is WW2. This guy should watch 23; sometime when all you do is look for something you find it all around you. A little too woke this dude, needs a good sleep and maybe a few books instead of the brain rotting silver screen. The Dick Gregory interviews are gold, best part of the channel! I love how he bitches out the interviewer time to time yelling at him telling him to shut up, then the interviewer just timidly trying to say what he thinks Dick wants him too only to get a head shake, classic! Please interview Thomas Sowell! He's another great senior interviewee, grew up in Harlem in the 30's.

AWS, Thanks so much for viewing and taking the time to comment. I have been challenged on a number of occasions about statements that I have made in my mini-lessons. And I welcome them because as I have stated in the past-- I learn from the knowledge of so many of the viewers. Also, I know that I am human and subject to error. Firstly, I do not study history solely in an attempt to prove my thesis, discounting everything counter to my perspective and seeing only what confirms it. No, I make every attempt to proceed objectively and to test my beliefs with sound and unbiased judgment. I let the facts take me to the conclusion. My perspective may be my starting point, It is not necessarily my ending point. And I do sleep. And I do read and study quite profusely. My library is quite extensive and it remains so after discarding or donating more than 40,000 books. No brag--just fact!
You state that the most depicted era is WW2. Maybe you should check your claim for accuracy. Maybe a starting point would be Professor Bruce Chadwick's book, "The Reel Civil War". Also, I find it difficult to believe that the six years of the WW2 period would take up more screen time than the "slave era" from 1619 to 1865 as a historical period. Not to mention the number of Civil War films alone that exceed the total number of WW2 movies produced.
In closing, I also feel that it is important for us to be very respectful of each other. We can disagree but we do not need to be disageeable, dismissive or demeanng. Each one, teach one. Be Well. Be Safe. Peace and Blessings!!!

Professor Woods: I've been trying to locate a copy of a Cuban film I once saw about a slave rebellion in Cuba where slaves formed communities and lived in the bush. Was it called Muala? Mulala? No matter what I try I can't find it. I most distinctly remember that the slave leaders spoke Arabic meaning they were Muslims and this was a second language, probably to Manding. West does not want us to know they were Muslim and therefore no doubt literate. . . and able to write to one another. Can you help me locate that film?

We need to stand together as one,
    As one Mind
My collective rhymes our poetry of our time,
Seems to me we are all dying on these mean streets,
thrown into a world of sin, a life time ago.
All we see is crime and punishment this is our reality.
We are not bringing PEACE! It's hard to see a daughters pain when they take her babies away.
My life to will be token in time and there will be No crying, because I am the same as you.
We have to make a change instead of going out all crazy.
Organize reform set a form like a pyramid that can't be stopped that can't be caught.
What happens to a flame when you set one on fire?
It's an insane game like cat and mouse, we creeping through they're houses on hOUR streets
Got a hundred thousand mother fuckers just like you and me
Ready to start beef on our blocks
Go a head call the cops and take one or two three or four you have ten mother fuckers behind your doors
All around the city We hot and never stop Check Matt
    where ever, when ever
Ready to explode reload not giving a fuck
We hit um up West side East side Alll sides
They're time is running out automatic gun fire.
We aiming at they heads not they're chests
Now go to the next project set them in check we all gotta go in time
    We do not commit SUICIDES
    We ride until we DIE
We will kill or be killed and multiply
    Survive WE will die
    And please stop getting high
Make money and buy supplies to do drive byes
    Behind these hazel eyes
    I cry bitter sweet tears
for each and everyone of you
I will always hold you right here
    Poetry for the broken

Hollywood does not like Tarantino. Disney went out of there way to bury Hateful 8 in the ratings by releasing the Stars Wars movie simultaneously. Hateful 8 isn't "real" either but it is historically prophetic.

I was digging this interview until the last 5 minutes.
He say's "We're dealing with people who lived so we can't have them doing fantastical things, because it goes against what they actually did in real life, see in film we have the white heroes"
He goes on to name mythological characters played by white men "Most of your heroes are mythological, their not real people so they can do anything Hercules, Samson, Tarzan, Superman" He gets to the real life black historical figures that are portrayed in movies and his argument is that they die "Because you can only do so much with real people"?
I'm sorry but what he is saying is a hunk of shit, instead of looking at an inevitability (death) lets rejoice in the power that our ancestors had. How can he even compare the myths of Hercules, Samson (?), Tarzan and fake Superman to the real life accomplishments and heroism of Malcolm, Martin, Joe Louis, Jackie, Nat, etc???
He needs to stop with that.
"He" is discounting what our ancestors did and comparing them to some fake mess put in movies trying to make an argument that racism in film is to blame for the portrayal of African-Americans (not saying some of that isn't true. Yes real people DIE even those who accomplish fantastical things. He is equating fantastical perfect figures to real life individuals with real character flaws. Yes Nat Turner's rebellion could be viewed as a failure for the most part, but you know what it isn't it isn't showing a weak black man who was not willing to give up his dignity, integrity, life and power, he would rather die than be in bondage. Those are all strong character traits!!!!
Also as the story goes Samson was not a myth he was a real person and Samson died, cool thing Samson was from the tribe of Judah, Samson had 7 locks, Samson was more than likely a person Black.

Hello. First of all, thank you for viewing and posting a comment. In my analysis of Black film representation, I make every attempt to offer a perspective that is based on the evidence of what's presented in the motion pictures I study and to look at such, in a balanced and objective process. My concept of "circumscribed historicity" suggests that "historical" events or individuals, are more subject to limitations and boundaries, from a "super-heroic" perspective than are those based on fantasy or mythology. In a Eurocentric American society that is institutionally racist and based on a context of white supremacy--the image of blacks (specifically, Black men), is never projected by the same rules and standards allowed for white men. Consequently, we are bombarded with white super heroes such as Batman, Superman, Tarzan, James Bond and others while Black heroic figures given film treatment, are based mostly on real life people. It is my belief that this is a way to show the black in a positive light but it also provides for the portrait of blacks as contained, non-threatening people as well. The argument is that you can't make them "bigger than life". You can't show them doing things that are not historically accurate. It may and has been done for White figures such as Billy the Kid, Jesse James or Wyatt Earp. Their portrayals have been projected with little regard for fact.
When a Black themed story is green-lighted by the motion picture gatekeepers, it must satisfy certain factors: It must be as commercial as possible. It must not be subversive. It must be assimilationist. It must be Politically Correct, and the Black must not be superior to the White.
For the dominant White themed film, the process is different, and the boundaries are less restrictive. The agency factor becomes more efficient for the White as a consequence.
How powerful is this process? Well, just go to Philadelphia and view one of the main tourist attractions--the statue of "Rocky". This statue pays homage to a white fictional boxing champion while a real life Black champion, Joe Frazier, is not given the same reverent thought. Look at a man like John Wayne. He's been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Many regard him as some iconic war hero. And for what? Why? It's because he was a cinematic Superman depicted killing thousands of Mexicans, Native Americans, and Asians in countless motion pictures? He was certainly no real life hero! But look what the screen did for him!
A motion picture is a propagandistic tool. It's used to promote an ideological agenda. Filtered into the entertainment is the message. In American film, the message is one of White Supremacy. That is my point. Peace and Blessings!!!

I can understand your viewpoint after reading your breakdown here clears it up a bit. However even with what you stated "My concept of "circumscribed historicity" suggests that "historical" events or individuals, are more subject to limitations and boundaries, from a "super-heroic" perspective ".
I really think that is a fairly easy assessment for anyone to make. There are countless limitations to historical events when compared to super heroes. I mean Superman can bounce a bullet off of his chest, whereas MLK and Brother Malcolm both died of gunshots.
I understand your logic of white supremacy and racism in Hollywood. It's when comparing to it to Superheros that it becomes a bit much because fantasy and reality don't exist in the same plane of existence.
Steel, Blade, Spawn, Storm (X-Men) are all movies based on Black comic book characters. These are Superhero characters you forgot to mention as they are Blacks portrayed in fantastical ways but as you said about Django they aren't real so it can be dismissed. And that is my point superheros are dismissed in the grand scheme of things.
In all honesty, I would rather see real life historical Black Hero's as opposed to these comics anyway.I honestly think that goes for a lot of Blacks, which is one of the reason's (in addition to racism in Hollywood) why there aren't many Blacks portrayed in these fantastical ways. Our history is so rich and deep. It gives me greater satisfaction seeing Jesse Owens dust all the White's in Nazi Germany in front of Hitler. That embodies Black Pride.
It just seemed as though your comments regarding our history being on the big screen, was being compared to fake stuff. It seemed to dismiss what we did and our struggle and triumphs. Though I'm sure that wasn't your intent.
Hollywood is fake our history is real!!!
However, I fully agree with your notion that that Hollywood and the entertainment industry overall are racist. I mean since when were the Pharaoh's in Ancient Egypt white? They literally whitewashed history "portrayals with little regard to fact" you were dead on.
Salute brother. I appreciate the follow-up.

I salute you too. As Jerry Butler once sang, "Ain't understanding mellow?" I feel we are both saying the same thing. Forgive my failure to be clearer on my point. Yes, we have a proud history of Black heroes and sheroes. And their stories are rarely told by those who dismiss our proud legacy and refuse to view us as a great and magnificent people. I learned much from your comment, and I respect and agree with much of what you have stated. Thank you for your response. Be well and safe. Each one, teach one. Peace and Blessings!!!

Thanks for the info though I don't expect Spike Lee to get all races but his own correct. But not a reason to criticize from my point of view. Were the whites in these films not portrayed correctly? The only way to get it the way you want it is to reinstate that system and film it. But that will never happen because none of us really want that. So we are left with watered down, I'm sorry (WHITEWASHED) versions. If you feel you need that kind of treatment to validate yourself, you aren't going to get it from me. Peace be with you.

the part about how most white heroes being mythical while black heroes depicted being real people really got me thinking...the fallible representation constantly present seems to present a push to deidolize them, corrupting the image of those who are made to be representative of a whole people/race, discouraging rebellion. the Nat Turner "type" mentioned here is also related, as the man is corrupted by insanity while also seeking revenge, instead of someone righting wrongs like the white heroes.
