This is more or less EXACTLY what I needed to see, so thanks! Especially showing the hair rinsed and un-styled, that was perfect. It's really frustrating being a guy and actually giving a crap about your hair (or fashion, for that matter), because so many men don't, and by extension, most places just assume you want the same boring clipper cut every other chump walks in there asking for. Bringing in pictures only goes so far. At least now I have some terminology to back it up!

Lol man the struggle!!! So glad I haven't had to deal with finding a barber that understands my style and knows how to cut it well.
GO TO A BARBERSHOP. Not the salon your mom gets her nails done at.
Not Supercuts or any of those big lame haircutting chain stores either.
Have a guy cut your hair too. In the 2+ years I've been getting an undercut, women seem to use clippers like a foreign object, and they also always try to tailor your hair to their taste no matter how much emphases you put on how you want it (Not sexist, just my honest experiences).
Its pretty simple, you either get an undercut with a fade or you get it even all around. Undercut means dramatic length difference between the sides and top, pretty much. If your barber doesn't know what the word undercut means, get up, and walk straight to the door with your complimentary beer.
If you get a fade, make sure its a FADE, not a staircase on the side of your head with all the steps showing. The lines of the steps gotta FADE blurry n smooth if you want it proper.
IMPORTANT: There is a low fade, mid fade and high fade.
-High fade has your fade short till the top close to where you long top starts.
-Mid is, well, your fade transition is in the middle of your sides and is a straight line around the back of your head to the other side.
-Low (my preference right now) it like a mid but the fade transition line drops down as it goes to the back of your head and comes back up to the other side. I prefer this fade so that my long slick back has hair to blend and hold onto on the back versus having the end of the slick just sit at the back of your head.
If you're gunna get an undercut with the sides and back all one even length, save the money and have a buddy just run a 2 or 3 size clip on your sides and back leaving the top long.

I got my haircut yesterday, I wanted an undercut and completely forgot the name of it. Ended up looking like Miley Cyrus and I'm severely pissed with myself.

Scared to try this haircut, cuz if I mess up then it's gonna be awhile before it grows out again.
You can change this from a pompadour slicked back with tapercut (which is pretty much what it is) to a "faux-hawk"/Quiff really easy. You can always make the top shorter. You can turn this into anything really.
Try it--never hurts to try.
Just cut it. I had a faux hawk like a year before.

I regularly go to a stylist somewhere and they always give me the same shit. I tell them to give me a disconnected undercut, and keep the top long enough so that it has volume. I even give them endless examples of what I want. Then I notice when they work on the top of my hair they chop it up and thin it out too much. In the end my hair is short, and it almost has little to no volume on the top, and I end up looking ridiculous until my hair finally grows back out.
Go to a different barrber shop some barbers just dont give a fuck on what they are doing they just want an easy cut so that they will be done quicker

Drstrangelovr1941 literally that is the same thing that happened to me. I told my barber TO NOT TOUCH MY TOP HAIR, I want to keep it long. She cuts it to the point where If I put my hair down it doesn’t even touch my eyebrows. Now I have to wait and my school is almost starting bruh.
for me i would tell my barber:
1.disconnected undercut
2.only cut side and back(leave some hair on the top back hair)
3.leave the top hair length long(or maybe trim a bit)

@@pdswrld5200 Most of the hood barbers don't know about fade,skin fades,undercuts.They can only do classic cuts most of the time.When you go to modern barbers or barbers with certificates they most of the time do trendy cuts and they will give you better cut.

You could also try not going for volume and take it back more
Matthew Criswell with my hair at least, I had to wait and grow it out longer in order to push it back since it's so tall... now I can push it back more and it decreases the volume a bit
It doesnt matter if the top is too tall or the hair is too long, that gives it more volume and body. Also, if u have that gorgeous hair, u can try different hairstyles depending on what look you're going for. Most men dont have that gorgeous hair.....so i would say, enjoy!

How Is Your Hair Volume So Perfect?!! What Product Gives You Such Great Volume?!!!
I’ve gotten the sidepart undercut for years now (same style, except the top falls to the side), but my god, was it difficult to describe it the first few times. Here are few of the tips I’ve learned over the years:
1. Always find an image online to show your barber. Do that for all sides of your head (front, back, side)
2. If you have hair products on, put it on before you get your cut. That way you can visualize to your barber how you want your final look to be
3. Don’t be afraid if you don’t know the exact terminology. Just give your barber a good description. Like “I want the bottom to be the same as the sides, but gets longer to the top”. A good barber should understand (along with the image that you shown) that you want it tapered
4. If you are unsure of the length, always go longer. Your barber can adjust it later, but they can’t put any hair back
5. Don’t be afraid to voice your thoughts during the process. If you start noticing something is off, just speak up about it. After all, barbers are also humans. And, sometimes they can misunderstand, mishear, or just plainly forget. At the end of the day, it’s your hair and your money. So, you have the right to stop your barber and walk out

whats great about a disconnected undercut is that you can go to most old school barbers and pay less or a hot towel straight razor shave is included. these old school hair cuts are like the ones my pops and grandfather had, although with higher popmadours or longer side parts. I personally have a disconnected under cut with a straight razor side part on my natural part. from there I either roll with a side pompador, side part or just pull it back when I lazy or don't have a comb.
usually on the top I don't even have them really scissor my hair, normally I'll have them take the texture scissors to thin it out a bit as I have natually thick and wavy hair(curly when I was little). the wife drifts back and forth between my old faux hawk and my "greaser" look but the faux hawk took more work since 1 side of my hair wants to lay down while the other wants to stick up into half of a hawk.
good explanation as the descriptiong will work with both a fancy stylist and an old school barber, well also a new school barber too.

Disconnected.. that’s the word I’ve been looking for. I just got a hair cut and told my barber I wanted a fade on the sides and to leave the top a little longer thinking I would get a disconnected cut but I ended up with just a standard crew cut. Thanks I get it now :p

you would not believe the crazy looks I was getting from the hair stylist at Supercuts when I got this haircut yesterday.
I eventually had to walk to through the process step by step, each side at a time.
Eventually she was able to do it, but make sure they use the long hair clips to hold the top of your hair up (she tried the small ones and it wasn't holding the top enough...I had her find other clips before starting lol)
Also, for those unclear on the back, I ended up telling her to hold the falling hair up with a hair clip. Use a #2 clipper at the bottom (or occiptal area) and then fade the top section (or parietal area). Then to thin out the hair that falls down to ease the blend while styling.
With a little guidance (and mostly patience)...you can even get supercuts to cut some awesome haircuts.
I didn't thin out the top, but I think I will next time because i can't get the same lift with how heavy my hair is. (edit: I tried with Gatsby's "Wilde Shake" and it gave me the lift i needed. I'll have to check out the Hanz de Fuko products, you talk about in your other videos, some time.)

It really depends on your hairline, head shape, and how your hair falls. Some people can do it, some people can't. Plain and simple.

From my own personal experience, you can get it done at one but also keep in mind that not all of them will be able to. I get mine cut at a Great Clips but by a certain person who I have had very pleasant haircuts from before. But again, even with fancier places, most people try to find a barber who can consistently cut their hair the way they desire.
rather get it at a local barber because those corporations will hire any barber with a smidgen of experience.

I just cut my hair cut with your advice and it turned out great. But I never mentioned pompadour/ quiff and the stylist got the style wrong since at the time I didn't realize it was called a disconnected undercut pompadour. Other then that I really like your videos keep up it up!

The past few times I tried to get this but she wouldn't do it short enough to where I wanted it. I get this haircut 75% of the time, but sometimes I feel like it looks a little homosexual. I don't know what it is or how to fix it really. I think there is just a fine line with this style and it can get screwed up easily. In my opinion the guy in the video has way too much on top. Or the style he has in the first 5 minutes is wrong.

Good point on not cutting the back of your hair at the crown. Mine is & I'm trying to grow it out for an undercut slick back. Right now(3" long) it looks kind of weird with a slick back stopping short.

Last time I got an undercut, the barber cut the top part too high up on my head so it looks kind of mohawky instead of an undercut. Now its gonna take ages to grow the sides out to do it over again.
