Pertaining to the first case: Over the years I have known two different guys (no affiliation with each other) who took large quantities of LSD and ended up having a psychotic break while in the midst of said horrible trip. Both of them permanently fried their brains, and had permanent and significant personality changes afterward. That is absolutely a thing that can happen. Whether or not it's a viable mental health defense is another matter... it's probably not.

Back in university, we had a guy that was rumored to have suffered a mental breakdown due to too much LSD. The story was that the guy had wealthy parents so they kept him in school earning multiple degrees and living in the dorms because it was cheaper than institutionalizing him. He supposedly still had a savant-like mental capacity but zero social skills or ability to take care of himself. My friends and I tried to approach him in the lunchroom a couple times only for him to flee in panic. I felt sorry for him but at least he seemed harmless. Always wondered what happened with him since he was still there when i graduated.
I grew up in a family that camped out a lot. This was probably in the early 60's, but we were camping out, then went into nearby Kingman AZ for breakfast and bought a newspaper. Right on the front page was a story about a mom and dad who were murdered while sleeping in their car not far from where we were, the kids were in sleeping bags a little ways away. We were children and young teens (a group of five or six siblings and friends) when we were followed and threatened by someone with a machete or ax. This person stayed just out of sight and kept using the machete to chop into branches as we held on to one-another in an outward facing cluster, each holding whatever weapon we could take to hand. I remember smashing a glass bottle and holding it by the neck as we stumbled down the trail towards our car, the whole time being sure that either this person was going to charge at us from the dark with a deadly weapon, or that we'd get to our car and discover that they had disabled it in some way. Fortunately we were able to jump into my sister's car and it started. Were they seriously considering harming us deterred only by the sound of breaking bottles and my eldest sister's banshee cries to GO AWAY and LEAVE US ALONE!? Or were they just sadistically enjoying scaring a group of children? Who knows? I have never enjoyed being out in the woods at night since that incident when my brother was nine or 10 and I was 12 or 13.
Anytime I enter the forest, be it camping, hunting or hiking, I always take a sidearm. Mostly for cougars and bears but sometimes for the most dangerous animal. Be prepared!
So a person in the national parks (according to The National Parks Service) has a 1 in 2.1 million chance of being attacked by bears. Globally, various sources I’ve seen show that there are about 45 bear attacks, in the world each year. In the last 100 years there have been around 20 people killed in cougar attacks in America. I found one guide that said there had been about 14 cougar attacks (including non-fatal attacks) a year. One statistic I found d showed the odds of getting attacked by a cougar are about 1 in a billion. The low double digits, between 10 and 20 people each year are murdered in National Parks (out of hundreds of millions of visitors) and it is statistically likely that at least some of those killed are likely to be family or acquaintances of the murders. Meanwhile just having a firearm in the home increases a persons risk of death. Each year about 25,000 people die by suicide or accident and another about 23,000 are murdered by people with guns. People who live with guns in the home are at 3 times the risk of suicide and twice the risk of being killed by a gun. About 46% of all violent crimes are committed by a total stranger (meaning 54% is someone known to the victim). So if you have a Venn diagram of all people killed by strangers and by animals in the wilderness the number must be extremely small (like in the single digits a year). But if toting around a gun on the trail makes you feel better, then go for it.

You neglected to mention where these gun crime numbers come from, the percentage of legal v illegally acquired guns, and even then it doesn't address the great variance in countries with lower current ownership but per capita similar violence statistics. I am from NZ, a country with a very different outset on guns. Until recently ownership was very common, easy to acquire, and we had low gun crime. Yet in the last twenty years we have, with a population moving from 4mil~ to 5mil~ had a domestic violence rate only surpassed by Sudan regularly. I don't know why Klye gets so much hate. I posted about him on reddit a few months back, and he actually sent me a DM. Saying that he gets a lot of hate, so appreciated my post by recommending his channel. Reddit can be so hateful though. He either is or isn't your cup of tea. For me, I love his channel. No need to hate on him if it isn't. He has gotten more into murders and missing people on trails, instead of just giving advice whilst hiking/backpacking.... but he does have other videos that do just give advice on backpacking. Him telling true life stories about other people is not an issue imo. He keeps his channel relevant, and i have learnt a lot from Kyle.
It’s probably jealousy. His channel has a lot of followers, and he’s a young, good-looking all-American white guy with big blue eyes. That alone set him up for a lot of hatred online 😂
I don't understand any hate for him. He is always respectful toward the victims, and lots of others aren't. I enjoy his videos. (If I didn't, I'd just skip them.)

The California Jenner coastal murder bothered me for years. My family has a cabin not to far from there. The fact the young couple was senselessly murdered while camping on the beach. The fact they were not able to find a suspect for years later.
Great job, Kyle. Would be cool to see international camping/hiking stories, keeping the true crime focus along with the beautiful outdoor scene setting. You'll hit that milliie mark soon.

There’s a great Australia 60 Minutes documentary on it, and it happened in about 2018 I think. Great content, keep up the good work. I need more stupid safety preps to sit before camping season officially starts!!
If you're interested is Australian stories there is also the story about Carol Clay and Russel Hill who disappeared while on a camping trip in the Victorian mountains in March 2020. There were quite a few theories circulating before their remains were discovered much later and finally an arrest. Plus they had a secret relationship and apparently went camping together regularly but his family knew nothing about it.
I never miss a new video, and I share with my FB friends 🧡 We can't get out like we used to in our 60s but still enjoy a nice hike now and again. Kyle keeps us updated, maybe a lil safer !! Thank you ❤️
Theres a lot of fear for some folk to be taken out of their comfort zone and they might read a few stories and freeze. As you stated, you're a lot safer out in the sticks than walking down the street but it's the thought of no one around to come to your help that freaks some out. Also..why the hell wasnt the first guy locked behind bars for the safety of everyone else?
Far more universal. There has been ongoing debate in Australia about the detention of individuals who had arrived in the country without going through the correct channels for immigration. A handful with criminal histories, including sexual assault, had been kept in indefinite detention, which of course upset those who champion individual liberties over societal concerns. They took the matter to the highest court, leading to the release of the detainees. Within the month, all 7 were arrested for criminal activity... including sexual assault . Cue outcry, I suspect from self same crusaders, about the release of these known dangerous individuals into our society. Likely these men will be deported; unfortunately, citizens can't be deported. In Australia, I know of one case where a citizen was detained for life, with all legal niceties observed. Derek Percy was the vilest specimens ever spawned (his preferred victim was in low single figures of age, and he has been plausibly linked to several unsolved child murders and disappearances), and was convicted and (crucially) committed on psychiatric grounds. Parole and possible freedom were on the cards (indefinite detention being illegal in most countries), but at every appeal, the reviewing experts would return an assessment of "no diagnosable impairment, but do not release". After Percy's death, a storage unit full of his written fantasies was located. It should not have been possible for Percy to arrange this from his level of incarceration, but he managed. What chance would "supervised release" had of success? He would have reoffended within days, if not hours. So thanks are due to those who stood their ground and kept him safely locked away for life.
thank you, kyle. it was a challenge to hear these tragic and horrible stories but i made it through them. this video, in particular is a nugget of lessons. sometimes, for me, camping is a “lalala” get away. so easy to forget some of the dangers of not paying attention. thank you for the link to the survivor and victim’s website.
All utterly tragic stories yet that 2nd one is particularly frightening. It would be great to look into Laura Macke in the ONP. She disappeared on a well traveled trail on the way to the enchanted valley on late oct 2022. At first the family was very cooperative and then all of a sudden they weren’t and they said people should stop bothering them. I don’t know it’s kind of suspicious like, maybe the brother did it….
About the first case, there are people who can start on psicosis, bipolar disorder or others after experimenting with hallucinogens such as Ayahuasca, peyote, LSD. I'm not justifying the murderer, it's just that it's more frequent than you would think. Btw sorry for my English, I have migraine right now and can't find proper words and grammar
The Wisconsin one hit home a little too close. I live half an hour away from Green Bay. McClintock Park is about an hour east of where I like to go camping in the Northwoods. I bring my pitbull-boxer mix dog and a sidearm up with me when I go camping.
The third story is just like one that happened in Czech Republic few years ago. A mother who was about to lose custody on her four year old son took him on a winter walk in the mountains, where they were spending holidays. No one reported them missing until the owners of the inn where they were staying in noticed two days later. Immediately police, helicopters, mountain rescue started looking for them, thinking they may be lost without cell singal, wounded or so. Last proof of where they went was an eerie security cam footage. There's the mother walking with a stern, sad face and the boy behind her, pulling his sled. It took some time. Later they found them next to some forest road. She strangled the boy and hanged herself. It's always so hard to listen to this type of stories. How could the parents decide the way they did, I will never understand.
Mental health. Same thing happened here in Spain, the father killed his two daughters then killed himself. He had a restraining order. So sad for the innocent children.
My brother in law’s ex killed three of their four children and then herself. There wasn’t anything big going on, he wasn’t pressing for more custody or anything. He was preparing for them to spend the weekend with him, but that was a common occurrence. She was just so far off her rocker that she snapped. For some icing on that cake, my mom and sister were picking up food and supplies for the celebration of life ceremony and discovered a lady and her kid sitting at a table with a sign that they were fundraising for my brother in law to help pay for the funeral. My mom gave them the tongue lashing of a lifetime for taking advantage of the situation. And no, the lady was not fundraising for the funeral, she was scamming people and using the shocking story to get money. Some people are just disgusting.
Your videos were recommended to me so I binge-watched a few while I was sick the last couple of days and Kyle I actually have the feeling you don't really hate hiking!!!? 🤔❤😂 BTW I am from one of the most beautiful BlackForest (Germany) hiking areas and you should really go hike here one day....just an honest recommendation!!!
Thank you for teaching us about these innocent peoples lives, that they existed. They mattered 😢 And thank you for the valuable reminders of how to keep ourselves safe!
Wasn't there a guy in CA who attacked people on the trails with a machete or axe, way back in the 60s or 70s? My family did lots of hiking and camping as kids - a big batch of kids and my dad. Mom would stay home (relieved to have some time to herself, I suspect). My dad always carried a gun and a machete and each of us kids had a small hatchet and Swiss army knife. We had lots of bear where we lived, but I think Dad was also very cautious about other people. We also always had 3 to 4 big dogs. I never worried about a thing; I guess Dad did all the worrying.
Bad luck also happens in a big city. A famous German Police Office from Munich wrote a book about his career. There was one murder who sat with friends on a park bench. Later he said, "OK, i go home, have a nice day! But, on my way Home i kill the first person." No one knows, why he had this Idea. The victim was a man on it's way home from Work. Killed with a pocked knife. It took a very long time to find the murder. Problem was, that his friends were not the smartest guys on earth and they we're just afraid of getting in trouble. They never asked questions and they never have answers.
I remember Malibu state park / Anthony all too well. I had hiking there all day & was just finishing up my hike when I ran into a state park employee that informed me of the recent shootings and other incidents. I was very caught off guard having heard nothing about this living nearby & hiking in the area frequently.

I would have added Robert Garrow on this list. Adirondacks are such a massive wilderness that has small towns scattered amongst the trees. The residents of those towns at the time had to be scared to death knowing a guy like that was lurking in the woods looking for his next victims
I’ve been to Mcclintock park … it’s very secluded even today ( no cell phone service there ) , I’d imagine it was even more so in the 70’s … it’s a very beautiful park with the peshtigo river going through it … but you do get an Erie feeling walking around its trails. Glad they finally closed that story after all those years
Holy Crap I run in Jenner CA quite often on the coastal trails. Never knew it had a dark history to it. Such an isolated area, Jenner itself has maybe a couple restaurants and one gas station which is useful for traveling up the coast as its extremely desolate after that point.

We had almost an entire family wiped out in Iowa, about 30 minutes from here at a state park. Maquoketa Caves, beautiful place and this kid went into a family’s tent and shot all but one that managed to escape and alert a nearby adult. The poor kid lost both parents and his sister, and they caught the found the guy within an hour, dead after his spree. Because, you know, just doing that first and leaving this poor family in peace was too much.
This was a few summers ago- July 22, 2022- Sarah and Tyler Schmidt, daughter Lula all died, Arlo, who was NINE managed to escape uninjured and was taken by THE SUSPECTS OWN MOTHER to the front of the park entrance to call 911, when they found her son in his department from his parents dead from 2 self inflicted wounds. Afterwards Cecelia had the audacity to claim her son was a victim, too.
My aunt told me a story from the 70s. She was at a party and this girl took alot of lsd.. she's been in a mental asylum ever since. It's possible. Not DEFENDING him but it's possible.
How did I ever survive? If I had only known about all the dangers of hiking and camping I might have had a terribly exciting time. Those peaceful evening sunsets, the warmth I felt as the sun rose, the gentle whine of the mosquitoes, must have lolled me incapable of seeing the pending doom, the surprise horror and the terrifying what if. I need at attitude adjustment.

One time I got scared camping from other people. Usually it’s wildlife I worry about here in Alaska. Yrs ago we had a man walk up on us carrying a rifle about 2 am. It freaked us out. Our dog had woke us up cause she heard him coming down the trail. He was drunk and looking for his friends and got lost.
oooooo that first case got me heated right away. How the hell can any defense lawyer with even a shred of a soul present the case “but it’s not my clients’ fault he’s a horrific monster, he has mental health issues!” when his client literally DECIDED to take a massive dose of LSD and now his brain is fried! That isn’t a damn mental health case!! He chose to do that to himself, he’s 100% responsible for anything he did after that point regardless of whether he could think straight anymore or not. You don’t get to be stupid and selfish right to the edge of it nearly killing you and then forever have the luxury of playing the mental health card, that’s pure bullshit, I’m so glad they didn’t let him off. That defense lawyer should be absolutely ashamed of himself for even presenting that argument like it was remotely similar, it spits in the face of every person suffering from mental health disorders they’d give anything to not live with.
It seems like EVERY person has some form of mental health problems, myself included. The easy answer seems to be reopening asylums but it'd be nice to have what some other countries do: a social worker that confirms people are actively addressing their mental health issues by seeing psychiatrists and taking their meds. It's basically a probation officer for mental health, if you don't comply with your treatment plan you get committed. Something needs to change because it's only getting worse. Another thing, the doctors in California are so backed up that I have to wait three months to get an appt with my psychiatrist. It's depressing.
Exactly...its like 6 mo to a year long wait to see a psychiatrist in the part of Wisconsin I'm in (Madison). More funding needs to go into mental health care.
Yeah, they made a big mistake closing down all the inpatient hospitals. Some people just need to be in a controlled environment, as they can't successfully manage themselves (or be managed) in the community. It would require people to part with some money in the form of taxes though, so don't hold your breath.
A police sergeant friend of mine said that Canada made three major mistakes that now hinder policing and helping to prevent a lot of crime. 1. Closing the asylums 2. Striking down the vagrancy laws 3. getting rid of the foot patrol police aka beat cops.
This is something that I just can not understand. How the hell do these people get put back on the street with multiple warnings of them not being safe to society? I feel that every judge that lets these people go free should be held accountable when this person takes the lives of people and animals!!!
Hiking and camping areas, are game trials for the human predator! It’s a shame, but it seems to be the case. You simply never know what you will encounter
The Tristan Beaudette’s murder was particularly heartbreaking because his brother & brother’s kids were in the neighbouring tent & they heard his two little girls crying out “Daddy, daddy!!” after he got shot & they were drenched in their dad’s blood & brain matter etc; (he was shot in the head. It’s surprising that the two little girls weren’t shot because the guy was just randomly shooting from outside the tent). That is something no one should see but it’s especially traumatic for a 2 & a 4 year old to witness. It’s definitely something they will never forget either. R.I.P. to all these victims. 😢
My dad worked with Veterans most of his career, he told me stories about guys who lived in the state hospital with broken brains after a bad acid trip. I believed him and chose never to try it.

Yet in the last twenty years we have, with a population moving from 4mil~ to 5mil~ had a domestic violence rate only surpassed by Sudan regularly. There is much more to this picture than simple numbers can explain and for this reason, many women feel safer knowing a firearm will level the playing field between them and some slimeball who thinks they've got the right to take.

@sabrinatscha2554 Someone who "knocks trees" to see if a Sasquatch replies, it is believed they use tree knocks to communicate in a way.
Everyone who is here though, understands that Kyle is a good guy.

If you do a pt 2, consider the story of a little girl named Cleo kidnapped out of the family tent one night in Western Australia. There’s a great Australia 60 Minutes documentary on it, and it happened in about 2018 I think.
Great content, keep up the good work. I need more stupid safety preps to sit before camping season officially starts!!
It happened in 2021. Her kidnapper so evil doing that. I was amazed she was found alive.
That’s so terrifying.

California's "brilliant" catch and release program.
I remember the story of William Hudson he was the son of the old owner and was mad his dad sold the land
thank you, kyle. it was a challenge to hear these tragic and horrible stories but i made it through them. this video, in particular is a nugget of lessons. sometimes, for me, camping is a “lalala” get away. so easy to forget some of the dangers of not paying attention.
thank you for the link to the survivor and victim’s website.
All utterly tragic stories yet that 2nd one is particularly frightening. We purchased a private camp site to avoid other people and keep the children safe on fenced off private property... and I feel so lucky we've never had issues like the story you shared. Most that's ever happened is us finding a man gold detecting on our land.
Conversation with friend on this video. “He was struck by a bullet.” Friend, “so someone shot him?” My response, “No, someone threw the bullet at him.”
you can be struck by a bullet that wasn't intended for you. so it's not an entirely ridiculous question.
Because intent changes the nature of having been shot…

A bad acid trip does not turn you into a vicious murderer.
it is possible that psychedelica can trigger psychoses, and a very small percentage just never fully get out of this. But becoming a vicious murderer is a completely different thing. That's not just a bad acid trip

The parents see the children as things they own.

Thank you for teaching us about these innocent peoples lives, that they existed. They mattered 😢
And thank you for the valuable reminders of how to keep ourselves safe!
There is a homeless guy in Austin, TX that has attacked people with a machete on the local hiking trails. Put a young man in the hospital recently

I would have added Robert Garrow on this list. Adirondacks are such a massive wilderness that has small towns scattered amongst the trees. The residents of those towns at the time had to be scared to death knowing a guy like that was lurking in the woods looking for his next victims
My parents and Aunt and Uncle were camping in the same area of the ADKs when Robert Garrow was on the run. They slept with shotguns.
I’ve been to Mcclintock park … it’s very secluded even today ( no cell phone service there ) , I’d imagine it was even more so in the 70’s … it’s a very beautiful park with the peshtigo river going through it … but you do get an Erie feeling walking around its trails.

1. Closing the asylums
2. Striking down the vagrancy laws
3. getting rid of the foot patrol police aka beat cops.
