  • This is my personal Evo SLS review.
    Everything said here is my personal opinion.
    The new Evo SLS from Duotone Kiteboarding is a game changer!
    This kite is 15% lighter duo to the new material on the leading edge, central and middle struts.
    In some sizes with more than one kilo weight difference comparing to a standart kite this kite works in light wind like no other.
    With the new Evo SLS you will be glading on the water and flying in the sky with light wind easier than ever.
    This is a perfect kite for someone who enjoy freeride because the kite steering is easy and the bar pressure is light.
    But also if you want to do some radical moves like huge jumps and nice kiteloops.
    For sure the Evo SLS together with the Dice are my favorite kites ever.
    Evo SLS x Rebel:
    Jumping and hang-time of Rebel is slightly better than Evo SLS
    Rebel works better for heavy peole than the Evo SLS
    Evo SLS is way more playful and faster than Rebel
    Evo SLS x Dice:
    Kiteloops on Dice are slightly better than Evo SLS
    Unhooked tricks on Dice are easier than on Evo SLS
    The Evo SLS is for someone who wants to jump high, have good hang-time, do nice kiteloops and have comfort for long downwinders.
    The Rebel is someone who wants to jump very high, have a lot good hang-time, this is kite is perfect for heavy people.
    The Dice is for someone who wants to do extreme kiteloops, likes to freestyle/wakestyle and also play on the waves.
    Evo SLS score (0-5)
    Freeride - 5
    Jump - 4.5
    Kiteloop - 4
    Foil - 5
    Wakestyle - 3
    Wave riding - 3

    Evo SLS x Rebel:
    Salto e hang-time do Rebel é ligeiramente melhor do que Evo o SLS
    Freeride - 5
    Jump - 4.5
    Kiteloop - 4
    Foil - 5
    Wakestyle - 3
    Equitação nas ondas - 3

    I'M 90kg, Foling with 9 knots on a SpiritCarve950, but just
    waiting for sweet smooth long lifts when wind reach 15knkts and I can jump with twintip.

    By the way is the Evo SLS better in low-end that I can size down from 12m to 11m without any problem?

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +2

      Yes, for sure! But then with the 12m you would kite even with less wind!
      But for example I had kited with my 9m Evo SLS in some crazy light wind that I wouldn’t be able to do it with a normal kite!

    Hi Reno, great Video 🙌. I am thinking about getting a new 12m Kite for jumping, cruising on a surfboard. At the moment I have a 2018 Rebel. I am not sure if I want the Evo SLS or if I should wait for the Rebel SLS 😉 I am also thinking about getting into foiling this year. Is the evo sls comparable to the rebel for boosting and hangtime. I know the Rebel is a specialized boosting kite, but is the Evo SLS much worse? I have around 85kg...You often speak about heavier riders. Is 85kg heavy?😃

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +2

      Hey bro! How are you?
      So, starting from the jumping, the Rebel does jump higher and longer than the Evo SLS, very similar! Buttt still does a bit more.
      When I’m on a surfboard, I like to have a more playful kite, to do turns, etc, and definitely the Evo SLS is way more playful than the Rebel!
      Also for foiling the Evo SLS will allow you to ride with way lighter wind, than the Rebel, because the kite just fly more with less wind.
      85kg still a ok weight for the Evo SLS, unless you wanna ride super over power! Since the Rebel is a 5 struts kite, the kite holds more its shape, but this is just when you are max over power on your kite.
      If you’re just worried about the jump abilities the Evo SLS is a great kite, you will loose just a bit comparing to the Rebel, but you will get a lot more in all other things on the Evo SLS. I hope I helped you!

    Hey Reno, nice review man!!
    Wanted to ask, lately I have seen a lot of pros using the evo sls over the dice for big air/megaloops.
    Why is that? Is it because in the smaller sizes the evo sls turns just as fast as the dice and provides also more hangtime?
    I am hesitating between a 8m dice or evo sls for big air and was wondering which kite would be best for my progression, safety and also to go higher.
    Sorry for the long post and thank you in advance!!

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +1

      Hey man! Thank you! This is a really good question!
      So the reason every time you see the riders riding more Evo SLS instead of Dice is because you can go higher! For example in the Red Bull King of the Air, 70% of the judging criteria is height and 30% extremity.
      So strategically wise, is better go with the Evo SLS than the Dice.
      The Evo is a bow kite, and the Dice is a hybrid (almost like a C kite, but with bridles).
      The control of the Dice for loops is way better and it always will be because of the shape of the kite like a bow kite will always jump higher than a C kite!
      But I’m pretty sure if you would tell the riders to go more extreme and not be worry about the height and also get the most kiteloop pleasure kite, they will take the Dice, I hope I could explain to you! :)

    Hi Reno! Congrats with your RUclips channel, excited to see the content to come.
    I have a question about the high end of the 9m. You say you keep this size up to 40knots, but for a casual/intermediate kiter what would you say the realistic high end would be?
    Also, understood the kite also has a very good low end. For a lighter guy (max 70 kgs) riding tt, do you think 9-11 better than 9-12?
    Seems this is a very reactive kite even in bigger size so, 12 sqm somewhat tempting to get the bigger low end.
    Thanks for your feedback! 🤟🏻

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +2

      Hi there! Thank you so much!
      Yes, for sure it’s not the most comfortable thing being on the 9m with 40 knots, especially me with 73kg, but if you wanna go huge, that’s the way! With 40 knots the perfect size would be 8m for me.
      But from 15 knots until 37 knots I can ride with no problem my Evo SLS 9m!
      The 11m is really a good size! The 12m would only make you go with even a bit less wind and hold you a little longer in the air.. in my opinion 11-9 is too “close” from each other. Neither 12 and 9 or 11 and 8, depending what conditions you have usual, and the style you like to do!

    • @Island606
      @Island606 3 года назад

      @@RenoRomeuKite Thanks vm for your reply! Nice to hear that the SLS 9m has a great wind range.
      Yea 12-9 or 11-8 probably opens up a better range, it of course get a bit more complicated if a 3rd kite (smaller) has to be added.
      I'm based in Holland and it can get pretty windy here :) 7m for those 35+ knot days!

      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад

      Sorry man! Didn’t get the notification of your reply!

      Both are perfect for learning! When you are in a advanced level of kiteloops the Dice is more predictable than the Evo SLS, but this you only feel in only advance megaloop.
      If you also like jumping very high and wanna get a lot of hang time get the Evo SLS.
      If you want to do more freestyle tricks too, go for the Dice!

Got rid of all my Core XRs, Ozone Edges, probably all my GTSs cuz this kite is much better in larger sizes and almost as good in smaller sizes. Only thing it can't replace is my NEO quiver. Well the only thing the Neo is better than the Evo is the drift ability, that’s why it’s much better for waves or going downwind.

      Para um vento muito forte o Rebel é mais estavel que um Evo, mas isso não é por ser SLS e sim pelo shape e estrutura do kite. O Rebel funciona melhor no vento muito forte por ser 5 talas principalmente!

    I’m a beginner with just a few rides, looking to get started in freeride, maybe some jumps in a while.
    I’m looking for my first kite and I can’t decide between these two options. Your advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
    PD: you’ve ride with a 12 m EVO with only 6 knots! That’s possible for a 80 kg beginner or I’ll need to develop experienced technique?

      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +3

      Hey bro! In a hydrofoil you also will be able to go kiting in 6 knots with the 12m, but you will have to develop more your abilities, so my advice is, go to the water everytime you can, with good and bad conditions so you learn quick!
      Both kites would be great to you right now, it depends more what are your goals more in the future..
      They almost have more or less the same characteristics..
      Rebel more power than Evo SLS comparing the same kite size, so a bit better to jump..
      Evo SLS more playful, it turns faster and the bar pressure is lighter, so better to downwinders or play in the waves, kiteloops..

      I have the Rebel 10 meter and Evo 7, 9, 12, 14 I like the Evo for the lower bar pressure. Rebel is excellent for kite stability in gusty winds- just had my Rebel 10 out in 15- 30 knot winds. If you are starting out I would recommend the Evo as a more all around kite- I use it for twin tip and also for my surfboard.

    Great job Reno on the videos and keeping up with all the comments. Very inspiring stuff. Question, if I am about your weight 73K, what would be the full wind range of the Evo SLS for an expert rider with a standard twin tip. Thanks!!

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад

      Hey Lindsey! How are you?
      Thank you very much! I hope you keep following the videos :)
      So it kinda depends where you ride most of the time. I'm 73kg and most of the time I'm not in a windy place, so I can cover a full range with a 12m and 9m Evo SLS. Pretty much from 12 knots till 38 knots, buuttt
      If I would live in a windy place like South Africa or northeast of Brazil where is never really light, I would have had a 11m and a 8m. To ride smaller than 8m it needs to be a lot of wind, especially for us wanting to jump as high as possible..

    Uma dúvida porque você usa pouco o Rebel, nos seus vídeos mais extremos de salto usa Dice e EvoSLS, sendo que o Rebe é 5 talas, e os 5 talas são os melhores para saltos ou não ? Poderia me explicar a diferença, eu estou começando a dar bons saltos e estava na dúvida entre o EvoSLS e o Rebel. Meu único foco é dar saltos bem altos e uns kiteloop.

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +2

      Fala Cleberson!!
      Então, o Dice com certeza é o melhor kite entre eles para fazer kiteloops, isso é pelo formato do kite.
      O Rebel é o melhor kite para saltar alto e ficar o maximo de tempo no ar, tambem pelo formato do kite.
      O Evo SLS seria um intermediario, onde você consegue fazer kiteloops e também saltar bem alto, em vento fraco o Evo SLS vai saltar melhor que o Rebel por ter o tecido novo mais leve, mas se você tiver bastente pressão o Rebel vai saltar um pouco mais que o o Evo SLS.
      Eu gosto muito do Dice porque a minha manobra favorite é kiteloop, porém só consigo fazer ele bem feito quando tem muito vento! Já com o Evo SLS não preciso de tanto vento assim porque consigo saltar mais alto, mas o kiteloop não é tão legal quanto ao Dice.
      Se eu quisesse só saltar, sem fazer kiteloop, andaria de Rebel na bufa, mas eu sempre quero fazer kiteloop, por isso não uso muito!
      Espero ter ajudado!

    Hey Reno! I have a question.
    I like to ride on foil (still beginner), directional and twintip. The Evo SLS seems perfect for this. So I've just ordered my 12m and 9m Evo SLS. Can't wait to have them in my quiver.
    On lighter wind days I stick to foiling. On the really strong wind days (30+ knots) I only twintip. According to your review and the size selector on the Duotone website the kite has a bigger windrange in the high end and a 9m is adviced for 30-40 knots. However, with my weight (95kg), would the 9m still be comfortable to ride? Or should I consider also buying a 7m for these winds?

      Hey Justin! How are you?
      That’s sick man! Congrats!

      You would also be able to kite on the 7m but if you want to push your jumps, the 9m will be the right size!
      Recently I was in Tarifa with 50+ with the 8m, it was too much on the gust, but somehow still possible!

    HI Reno, I've read all comments and comparisons and still doubting between EVO SLS and Dice, I like the windrange of SLS and new light material. Is the EVO SLS really that much lighter than Dice? the Dice is better in unhooking I get that, but why is the dice that better in looping? what will I notice? ATM riding a SS RPM, but want to fly higher and more looping, pr 16,5m Woo. I'didn't like the SS raptor by the way, too slow, so I like responsive kites with direct feeling.

    • @RenoRomeuKite
      @RenoRomeuKite  3 года назад +1

      Hey Leon!
      So first thing I can say that any Duotone kite you would use, you will feel a lot of difference comparing to SS.
      The bar feeling from the Evo SLS for sure is lighter then the Dice, because of the new material and also the kite shape.
      The dice allows you to be able to feel more where the kite it is making easier to control it in difficult tricks.
      The Evo SLS you will jump higher than the Dice especially without waves to use as a quicker.
      Dice’s loop is more predictable than the Evo (or any bow kite).
      For normal loops the Evo works perfect, but if you wanna combine technical tricks with loop is easier with Dice..

      Evo SLS x Rebel:
      - Jumping and hang-time of Rebel is slightly better than Evo SLS
      - Rebel works better for heavy peole than the Evo SLS
      - Evo SLS is way more playful and faster than Rebel
      The Evo SLS is for someone who wants to jump high, have good hang-time, do nice kiteloops and have comfort for long downwinders.

The SLS needs less skills to keep the kite flying with light wind and it will make you to be able to kite with less wind as well.
