Little bit of background to this. Traditionally in Japan a village played drums to attract traders, if you had something to sell you followed the sound of drumming. So naturally the louder the village could drum the more business you could 'drum' up [bom-bom]. Hence drums got ever bigger, they have ones in Japan the size of a room.
Amazing. My grandson is Japanese-American. Living in Japan. He is 10 and has been drumming for 3 years. I get video of his performances. I am so proud of him and of his mama for supporting and encouraging him in traditional Japanese culture.
Humans, as a whole species, are intrinsically drawn to the sound of drums. It's that ingrained in our cultural evolution. find me one culture that didn't develop drums! It's like a hypnotic drug! THAT'S WHY WE ALL LOVE THIS!!!! I love drums.
Amazing! They demonstrate the true power of percussion and its power to move us. This was by far the most powerful percussion performance I have ever seen. I would love to see them live.
5:51 this fuckin legend in front, his hands are going so fast its like a blur like wow imagine how long the practice was to be this way the focus on his face is amazing but all of drummers were very impressive
I find this astounding first the endurance of the drummers, they synchronization and the varied rhythm the can produce with drums. I first saw a group in Japan during the Viet Nam era when I was on R&R there. Little did I know what was involved with their strength, training and timing that they have to have in order to be a master drummer.
Yeah, when you search on Spotify, some comes up as “war drums”. It’s clear the Japanese have played drums like so for centuries, for different reasons. A deep culture!
Thanks for uploading this improved vid. The solo with six sizes of long-body taiko (長胴太鼓 Naga do dai ko) was of particular interest, as it translates to large drum kits, although not at similar volume.
@DamienSteel highest grade of water buffalo, or bull, or ox skin. i'm vietnamese, but in the orient(china, vietnam, korea, japan...) , tradition drum maker are using all the same material
I actually went to one of their concerts in Washington, D.C. it was amazing...the only thing, my boss had to yell at me all day the next day, because my hearing was off...throughly enjoyed myself tho.
This sort of instrument is indicative of the militaristic nature of japanese culture. We forget in modern eras that the taiko was used in the same sort of form as the western drum and bugle corp: to communicate instructions in the heat of battle over long distances. A very practical purpose.

I expect that is the origin of that turn of phrase... "Drumming up business."
The shoulder, arm and back muscles must be phenomenal. I have much respect and am "in awe" of Taiko drummers. It is trully an athletic art form!!!
They don't go to the gym. They ARE the gym.

Every new powerful japanese sportscar needs a promotional film with this music. Instant buy. So potent.

It is amazing how they get sounds that seem like a stringed instrument from drums!

These guys get very muscular due to the exertion to perform this. If you think about it to keep going like this for so long needs endurance
They are athletes as well as musicians.
