Little bit of background to this. Traditionally in Japan a village played drums to attract traders, if you had something to sell you followed the sound of drumming. So naturally the louder the village could drum the more business you could 'drum' up [bom-bom]. Hence drums got ever bigger, they have ones in Japan the size of a room.

I expect that is the origin of that turn of phrase... "Drumming up business."

The shoulder, arm and back muscles must be phenomenal. I have much respect and am "in awe" of Taiko drummers. It is trully an athletic art form!!!

Amazing. My grandson is Japanese-American. Living in Japan. He is 10 and has been drumming for 3 years. I get video of his performances. I am so proud of him and of his mama for supporting and encouraging him in traditional Japanese culture.

Humans, as a whole species, are intrinsically drawn to the sound of drums. It's that ingrained in our cultural evolution. find me one culture that didn't develop drums! It's like a hypnotic drug! THAT'S WHY WE ALL LOVE THIS!!!!
    I love drums.

I find this astounding first the endurance of the drummers, they synchronization and the
varied rhythm the can produce with drums. I first saw a group in Japan during the Viet
Nam era when I was on R&R there. Little did I know what was involved with their
strength, training and timing that they have to have in order to be a master drummer.

This sort of instrument is indicative of the militaristic nature of japanese culture. We forget in modern eras that the taiko was used in the same sort of form as the western drum and bugle corp: to communicate instructions in the heat of battle over long distances. A very practical purpose.
