Never forget cultural differences: there's a lot in this. Put simply: smile at a Russian you've only just met, and they'll think you're lying to them. Anyone from a different culture to the US one will respond to interpersonal situations in different ways, simply because of the way they've been brought up. In my example, a US Interrogator smiles at a Russian suspect and asks after their health: cultural norms have already put the Russian on their guard, even if it's only subconsciously. Every nationality has its Tells and its Cautions.
On the other hand, even Russians have and used those Dale Carnegie principles. They have been popularized in one of the movies as "7 rules of Gleb Zheglov" (presented by one of the detectives).
"The answer to the first is no, we didn't torture detainees at gitmo". "The answer to the first is no" - (presenter nods "yes" at the exact moment the word "no" is uttered). "we didn't torture detainees at gitmo". - (presenter shakes head in the negative throughout making this section of statement.) Also watch for deception around the agreed meaning of words. The legal definition of torture according to the US government would not include water boarding, sleep deprivation or stress positions, so on this reprehensible technicality the US government can now say it is not involved in torture.
Lena worked for me, and she is absolutely one of the best in the country on this topic. I highly recommend her to anyone or any organization that could benefit from her expertise.
It's extremely likely that the type of interrogation she was doing got nowhere near the torture and abuse that was documented in gitmo. It was purportedly the night shift guards who did most of the abuse (the pictures that got leaked), and the intelligence officers doing the waterboarding and "enhanced interrogation" were only a short chain of command removed from Cheney himself who was keeping the circle of people small and himself autonomously involved in order to isolate Bush from any potential repercussions.
@@UncleKennysPlace I'm talking mostly about the documented and leaked pictures of what some of the soldiers were doing to some detainees, it wasnt part of interrogation, it was just sadistic abuse and humiliation. But that aside, I don't know what else you could call waterboarding. Anyone who's ever been waterboarded for training will tell you that even when they know what to expect going in, they still 100% feel like they are going to die during the act.

Mike Anderson She should. She talks and out finding out information that let to the deaths of hundreds or thousands of people like she was scolding siblings for making a mess. She’s flipitly talking about some of the most serious work that’s been done in our time, like it was nothing. All that’s calculating of corse, she disarms people for a living, but she’s one of the most dangerous people you could imagine. So your correct to be scared of her.
@Behavior & Handwriting Reveal the Truth Do you know how many people she helped kill? I get it they were our enemy, I helped kill them as well. But listen to the way she talks about it. Like she was figuring out which kid stole from the cookie jar. That's why she's scary to me. There is no remorse there, like she enjoyed it.
Most were determined to be innocent. Tribal rivalry got these people in Guantanamo. All you need to do was point finger and Americans bombed. Info was $500 a piece which is 6 months salary.
Great talk on a difficult subject. The way we middle class are brought up, we give benefit of doubt even when the logic is persistently against it. Finally (as example), after years discussing, leading to an important meeting, shaking hands, saying goodbyes and turning to go; i again shook hands with my old pal. That's when he momentarily reacted. His hands instinctively withdrew and the ever smiling face ''leaked'' negatively.
I've been caught in that "trap". "Did he give you that?" "He promised it me a copy and one showed up in my mailbox. I don't know for sure that it came from him but I presume so." Is that evading? "Where were you last night?" How about "Why do you care?" Or even "F*** off, what I do on my time is none of your business." How about a little privacy here. (Although I might yield a little to stay out of jail.) If my SO were so insecure that this question came up, I don't know what would happen.
Was this before or after you would anally force feed them? Funny I didn't know the body absorbed macro nutrients from the colon. Also strange was their diet of hot sauce and sand.
It's against the law for her to tell the truth, she would be guilty of breaking classified information if she told the truth about inhumane interrogation lol
Who told you that? Thats not considered sensitive information like the location of field offices or names but practices that go against the geneva convention she most certainly has the obligation to tell us about. Remember the CIAs job is to keep "US" safe not itself. No over sight means the voters and legislatures are not in control we live in a republic not a military dictatorship.

I am actually reading the book she wrote and there is a couple of sentences about how you told her to count the time while you held your breath under water. Just wanted to say thank you to your aunt for an amazing training last year!
Excellent presentation. I think people lie because of : Cover up a mistake or misdeed, gain financial benefits , personal advantage ,improve self image , to help people (Altruistic) , gaslighting , Pathological liars ,Avoidance , etc,.
Let me answer the question for this witch ... yes you DID torture detainees who with exception most were released because they were not terrorists to start with. So called all the info you got from them is classified because you have non. Number two, you are playing games here by asking people to define torture and t thte same time you are using the techniques that are clearly defined as torture. I was abroad too. Most of the people said that Americans were settling tribal rivalry without evening knowing it. All oe had to do was point to Americans there tribal rival as Al QAIDA or Taliban and American would drop heavy ordinance ... not killing terrorists but their tribal rivals. If you thin I ma wrong than let me ask you why this is dragging so long .... remeber Vietnam ... we were played there and are being played here.
I dont think the relationship between an interrogator and their detainee translates well to civil life but ok. I'll try it at work next time. I have the feeling though that being nice to everyone will just lead to everybody turfing their work on my desk. Since I am Mr Nice guy.
Hmm not trying to be crass or anything, but those detainees were probably seeing and talking to a woman for the first time, so I guess they would feel inclined to be nice and cooperative. I mean, they are trained to hate westerners (including women) and thus deny a big part of what makes them human, so a chance to talk to a woman would be something incredible to them, especially when she doesn’t treat them like animals.
While these are very good for most people their are some where these do NOT work. When you ask me a yes or no question about a complex problem I'm hardly EVER going to give you a yes or no answer because I believe without doubt that either answer would be a lie. It is either Yes....BUT or NO....BUT because neither short answer would be totally true. If you ask me which way I LEAN then I could give you a yes or no. Hesitation: At my age when you ask me what I did last night I DO have to think about it because I can't remember what I had for breakfast much less what I did LAST NIGHT Interesting though. MANY people smile and look away and you know that the next words that come out are going to be a lie, or at the very least something that they don't want to tell you. Shoulder shrugs can also mean, I don't know if I want to tell you and I'm confused about what to say. Interesting talk though. And the other comments about her lying about torture at Gimo are funny too because being prior military I know that is false, NECESSARY but false.
Excellent information ! Surprise to find women are cable to not only interrogate but find out the truth ! I think most of us ( common folk ) thought this was done by military officers and males in general.

TEDx should be ashamed to have such speaker. Why not put serial killer on the same forum then. Its freedom of speech. You need to apply free speech in the context of logic.
I support her stance and torture might be a neccesity for national security and to prevent future acts. The most important thing is, if innocent people were subject to torture and there are several reports out there, that claim a lot of people inside were innocent.
yea... noo.. i could never agree on this ... sorry ... if ask me a question, and i answer it while scratching my nose, thats cause my damn nose itches, not because Im lying...
"No we didn't torture the detainees in Gitmo" *shaking her head*
HA HA HA HA
After so many years with liars and still not lying good.
Could be that, or could be her way of giving a message on purpose.
If she were shaking her head yes, that'd make sense.
Because there are no such thing called torture in US Military but "Enhanced Interrogation".

We didn't torture: we just broke them psychologically a fate worse then physical pain. You can set broken bones but a broken mind will never be fixed.
Their minds were broken LONG before we got our hands on 'em.
And many an elderly Vietnam vet came home broken and is still suffering from PTSD, 40 - 50 years later.
Most of their minds are already broken that is why it is so easy to do so
