It worked, that out of nowhere reveal is the reason I became a JoJo addict, you just never know what to expect with this series, and David Productions knows how to take advantage of this.
One of the many problems I had with part 1 was that it would introduce characters, and they would never have an arc or get developed, William Zeppeli for example is a mentor character, teaches hamon, then has a kind of forced emotional moment shortly after his introduction, then he dies. I cant be too mad at part 1 though, as it is Araki's first jojo part and him stepping into the unique kind of writing.
I think p1 handled william zeppeli well and I love how well he ties to the fate theme of the series. (Tho I idk if you have watched the anime or read the manga. I'm inclined to agree with regards to the anime) Him accepting his fate and facing it head on even if he already knew, was quite badass and I thought his death was very tragic. He was a father figure and an anchor for jonathan. He was the one build him up after he lost his home and his father. So jonathans reaction to his death def got me. Also not every character has to go through an character arc to be considered good (look at most p2 characters or some of p3 characters). Tho I do actually think that zeppelis entire story went through an arc. As for the others: speedwagon went through a character arc, poco went through a character arc and jonathan himself went through a way more elaborate character arc than his descendant joseph in his own part. Throughout the entirety of Part 1 I kept thinking to myself "yeah yeah so when does he get the big coat and hat?" and then by the ending I was just like "oh".
I’m not gonna say Phantom Blood was perfect but I don’t think it was bad as some people make it out to be, things definitely get more interesting afterwards but first time watching it I was already hooked and still look upon it fondly. Also in terms of the dub idk I didn’t really have a problem with the accents I thought voices in general were fine.
Yea part 1 is good, it's that some people get bored of watching part 1 and stop at like 1 or 2 episodes of part 2, it'll actually makes more sense why the story is pacing so fast and not that much development is in it when you reach mid way of part 2
@@himajongte I thought the ridiculousness of the story and the fast pace was part of the show as a whole, you know, since it's a bizarre adventure. So I really enjoyed part 1 because I wasn't expecting a deep emotional story, but rather something bizarre and fun. Now, a year later....I have a joestar birthmark tattoo and Josuke Higashikata is the best character of all time.
I thought it was decent at best and thankfully I stayed around because if Jonathan's death shook me to the core, Joseph then came in and hooked me in completely and it was smooth sailing from there.
47:18 it's actually goofier than laser eyes (can't believe I just said that) apparently the 'lasers' are actually liquids shot out at such high velocity they can cut through most materials.....yes, that's right, vampires in jojo can literally cry bullets.

In defence of the whole not showing what the mask actually can do AND the leaf glider thing. I would say that it really grasps at the bizarre situations that the show goes through. It sets up the extreme ideas and sudden changes in abilities or at least ways to use them that emphasise later battles and/or problem solving scenarios . The first time I watched those scenes it didn’t really ruin it because I was already encapsulated by the insane story. Which in later parts becomes more apparent and grows the “just go with it” feeling more out.
same, plus when i saw stuff like that i just kinda laughed and went "wtf haha" and then they make fun of themselves as well by slowly making the explanations more overly complex and long until eventually getting to a point where they go "fuck it, bullet deflecting oil"
Something I think would be interesting, would be if in those "Engrish" moments in the sub were inverted in the dub: instead of speaking in butchered english, what if those lines were in butchered japanese?
SPOILERS FOR PART TWO AND BEYOND: I really like how when stands get added they (at the start) feel very simple and kinda like a progression of Hamon like how hermit purples still has a lot of characteristics of hamon and then we start seeing stands that get weirder and weirder. Like comparing part three stands to part 6/7 stands are completely different. And I also really like that Araki abandoned Hamon for the stands because it lets him to be more creative with the design and the power of the stands, like we woudnt have civil war from part seven or heck even Foo Fighters without stands
Tbf, It was shown that hamon had HUGE possibilities like: 1. Extending limbs 2. Walking on wather 3. Converting any liquid into a weapon 4. Literal carbonation 5. Conductivity 6. Knowing the future 7. Killing the undead Etc, etc, etc, etc... I think the real problem layed in the fact that limits to hammon were never added in part 1 and because of that, I am pretty sure araki restricted himself in part 2 from doing dumb nonsensical BS with hammon like the "Knowing the future" thing again, while stands are much easier to put limits to since every single one of them is a different world, and with those limits you ask yourself stuff like "Man, how is jolyne going to escape from C Moon?" BOOM, mobius strip, didn't feel like BS because we knew what stone free was able to do and yet we never thought of the mobius strip And most stands dont have anything to do with some powering energy, so in that sense, they're better than hammon
In the manga, he does smash some zombies here and there with his sledgehammer. Dude's got balls though ! No powers and he still assists JoJo and Zeppelli through this horror show !
prob only because of my sisters obsession and peer pressure through showing me many memes from the show, i instantly became a chainsmoker as you said in your analogy lmai
The thing that you made Zepelli talk 2 times and both times its fricking Super Mario 64. As an italian we went from "Its-a me Mario" to "*angry talking* and maybe some no no words"
This is seriously one of the best videos covering JoJo's I've ever watched. HELL! It's one of the better video essays out there due to how eloquent and fair you are with presenting the ideas of what makes JoJo's special. Most video essays are either too short with the writers failing to reach the conclusion they would logically get to or are BLOATED beyond reason to pad out the video with as much repetition as possible. I'm likely going to return to watch this video in its entirety again because of how well written the script for it is. Saltydkdan! PLEASE MAKE MORE LONG FORM VIDEOS LIKE THIS!! YOU ARE SO GOOD WITH THIS FORMAT!
Speedwagon isn't useless, the moment he gets a lucky break, he literally dedicates his life to helping the family... and after he dies even. Speedwagon is just, he's a brother, the kind of brother that you want on life.
@@Saltydkdan Sure, he’s pretty useless to the actual story in part 1, but it’s likely that at least Zeppeli would die if it weren’t for Speedwagon’s hot and steamy army abs to heat him up.
Quick critique of your mask critique, I disagree that it being magical comes out of nowhere. I mean… look at it. It shoots spikes out upon coming into contact with blood. The first time I saw it, I knew for certain that it was somehow magical. I feel like if you’re watching a story and it lingers on an ancient mask that looks and acts like that, it’s extremely rational to assume it to be magic. Or at least have some king of ancient magical properties. The fangs and blood thing gave me enough prior info for me to go “yeah, that makes sense” when it turns out to be a vampire cosplay device. And I by no means mean anything bad by that, just something I personally disagree on. Love the video by the way, keep it up mr dkdan.
I'm definitely giving this Director's Cut a watch, I loved the original video since it was thanks to that video that fell into the rabbit hole. I had heard of Jojo around the time that part 3 was airing but paid no mind to it and it wasn't until part 5 where I grew interested. The first clip I saw of part 5 was the Grateful Dead and Beach Boy arc, showcasing Bruno going to extreme lengths to outlast. There wasn't much action but seeing what Bruno did, literally unzipping his heart and banking all on his stronger resolve to pull him through gave me excitement to watch the show. Though despite that I was still reluctant, mostly cuz of it being a new anime but also cuz I didn't want to skip nor go through the first 4 parts, but seeing this video and seeing all twists and turns only in part 1 I knew I was going to enjoy the show. And thus I proceeded to binge part 1-5 and now I got to enjoy part 6 with everyone else.
Phantom Blood’s adaptation was like if in Battle Tendency we went from Santana, to Kars. No whamuu, no esidisi. Just Santana and Kars. I feel like they should re-adapt it because phantom blood was pretty long, and they skipped over so much.
Nah it didn't skip THAT much. It skipped a lot tho for sure. A more accurate comparison is if they adapted Battle Tendency but skipped over the character building scenes and most of Joseph's training.
I never paid attention to where Phantom Blood began or at least forgot, so as someone from Liverpool I cannot believe that Dio is effectively a scouser this is such a revelation haha! Great video all the same mate, glad to see Part 1 getting some love :)
Part 1 had a great ending, and while Jonathan didn’t develop beyond being a one note character, his ending arc was incredible, and made me feel sad for him in the end. Though I’m pretty sure he’s technically around in the series as an angel since when most JoJo characters die, you see their spirits go off into heaven because JoJo, but still, a great ending nonetheless.
14:42 I can understand I once mistook killing someone in front of your daughter as motherly love, forcing your son to kill investigators as father son bonding and forcing someone to eat a raw hamburger out of a paper bag as a corporate buy out.
I'll admit, my induction to the cult of JoJo was not exactly friendly, my friends basically pinned me against a wall, held my eyes open and forced the first episode on me (joking obv, they just wouldn't shut up about it so I went along with them so they'd stop), but even after that I was genuinely interested in the show. The first episode leaves so much that you can't help but be interested in it! And from there I experienced JoJo on my own and found my own love for it. It really is a great series and I honestly do recommend watching it for yourself if you ever get the chance, which is incredibly easy since both Netflix and Crunchyroll have it to stream. As for Phantom Blood itself, my thoughts mirror Salty's more or less. It's just a prologue to the Bizarre Adventures of Jonathan's lineage, and most of the info here is necessary to understand the later JoJos. Plus, with it only being 9 episodes it's not that hard to binge in an afternoon so you can get to the good shit in Part 2 and beyond. JoJo is something that I dearly love and I'm glad it's getting the kind of coverage it does. It's honestly a fantastic series that I feel deserves it and I'm more than open to sharing it in ways that will get people to watch it on their own terms. One of my closest friends just started watching it recently and he's been loving it too. Araki is an incredibly creative person with a clear passion for what he does and what he likes, and I feel David Productions does a phenomenal job of portraying that with their beautifully animated scenes, the incredible voice talent they hire, *and my fucking god those OPENINGS* TL;DR JoJo good, you should watch it with a friend.
Fun thing to watch Baoh the Visitor. It's basically a OVA based on a Araki manga he did when JoJo was just getting started. It's got psychics, cyborgs, parasites that give people super powers, and some good ol fashion 90's anime gore.
I just watched it fairly recently. I find Phantom Blood to be my favourite because I like the conciseness of the series. The other series are good but I think the dynamic between Dio and Jojo as hero vs Villain is more interesting than the other series.
True. The brother dynamic is better than every other hero and villain dynamic. There's nothing nearly as interesting between them regarding future Jojo parts.
I remember watching one of the older versions of this video, and it's the point that got me to actually watch JJBA. I had heard of it before, but wasn't sure I'd like it. Now I'm a fan for life. Thank you, salty.
I wholeheartedly agree with the notion of most of the cast being one note characters. Most of my friends that haven’t been able to get into Jojo cite Phantom Blood as the place where they stopped. I have started to tell people to start on part 2 and then go back if they have the time because it is incredibly important to the overall story but it can be somewhat shallow with no prior knowledge of the overall story.
love seeing a video about jojo made by a fellow deranged person, the damage this series has done on my brain and love how you point out how fucking wild ep 1 part 1 is
WOAH, WAS THAT A JOJO REFRENCE? Jokes aside, I throughly enjoy action animes as is Jojo was no disappointment to that factor and I really loved it as a whole
JJBA is one of those things that's more enjoyable when you go into it *knowing* it's gonna be crazy. If you think it's going to be somewhat serious or whatever, you'll either be pleasantly surprised or thrown off your guard so hard you'll hate the show because it wasn't what you expected
your comment about dubs made me happy because i cant read fast, so i watched the dub and i understood and enjoyed JoJo far more than the sub ever could.
This video + other videos managed to get me into jojo around this year (currently at part 4),so yeah thank you salty for getting me to watch the show about buff men posing
“Man what even is this england 1868 bullshit” (Skips forward to time being accelerated to a point of infinity until the universe ends and restarts) (Skips back) “England, 1868”
The way I like to describe Jonathan is that he’s likable, but not interesting. It makes it so I can look back on part 1 fondly but it makes actually sitting through it a bit of chore.
Part 2 was the best out of the hamon parts, because it had the time to learn how to properly use it. part 4 for the stands, because they had time to explore just how powerful stands are.
And now,eventually,1st of December 2022 Stone Ocean ends and who knows when the fuck we'll get animated Steel Ball Run So I hope this Jojospective does continue! This was fun!!
i thought the leaf hang glider made sense, since hamon travels best through things that are or were alive, and can be used to stick things to each other via conductive current. kind of like joseph's hair shield. or the wine hamon cutter which uses a liquid fermented from grapes, or even joseph's wool hat web
Something funny to mention is that Yukako is (afaik) the first yandere and also (afaik) the first popular one too. Araki literally made tropes that lots of people use today. Props to him
If someone ever forced me to write a jojo self insert I would write my OC as starving to a point of invading dio’s life and eating him then dio takes control of them from the inside and the story continues on as usual like nothing ever happened.
Honestly can't wait for the Battle Tendencies episode, my second favorite part and my top favorite opening, Bloody Stream is fucking golden. Great work, salt-man.
With the Jojo history portion, you did make one mistake I couldn't help but notice, before the anime there were *three* forms of Jojo content that were available in North America. The two you mentioned (Heritage for the Future and the OVA series), and also the part 3 manga, which had some localized names replace the ones Araki originally wrote. The distribution began as early as the mid 2000s which is how I started the series.
I watched parts two and three expecting you to make new videos for them. You cursed me with the inability to stop watching JoJo just because you lured me in with the promise of new videos on the topic.
Okay I can’t wait for part 2 ! I will tell you you’re not gonna want to pick out every single fight for the next parts, even though I feel like the run time will still increase dramatically 😭
Personally, I see the Sub’s Engrish, and the Dub’s Accents to be one and the same. An auditory flair that is only experienced in that version’s language. To say the Sub’s Engrish is a positive but the Dub’s accents are a negative just feels hypocritical to me. It’s perfectly fine to like one and not the other. I admittedly do just that, I hate the Engrish in Part 1, but I would never say it’s a detractor of the Sub version. It’s just not what I want from Phantom Blood.
Read the description for more info, but I’m bringing this series back and more scripted stuff for 2022. Ive been dying to make a re-edit of these original videos to update them a bit, so enjoy this “Director’s Cut” lol

I think the real problem layed in the fact that limits to hammon were never added in part 1 and because of that, I am pretty sure araki restricted himself in part 2 from doing dumb nonsensical BS with hammon like the "Knowing the future" thing again, while stands are much easier to put limits to since every single one of them is a different world, and with those limits you ask yourself stuff like "Man, how is jolyne going to escape from C Moon?" BOOM, mobius strip, didn't feel like BS because we knew what stone free was able to do and yet we never thought of the mobius strip
And most stands dont have anything to do with some powering energy, so in that sense, they're better than hammon
This gives me hope Part 2 will come eventually
I love Speedwagon so much. He's a character that absolutely does nothing for the first part. But god he's such an amazing guy.
In the manga, he does smash some zombies here and there with his sledgehammer. Dude's got balls though ! No powers and he still assists JoJo and Zeppelli through this horror show !
I saw JoJo in the title and I clicked as fast as I could
I [Made in Heaven]’nd it
Mission is a success. I decided to give Jojo a shot after this review. Just started Stardust Crusaders, and I'm loving it so far.
I love how you proved your point of spoilers being undetectable until the context is given with the gag at 46:26
im so hyped , these past two months ive binged through all eps from part 1 to 4, and im so happy its still has an ongoing fanbase
prob only because of my sisters obsession and peer pressure through showing me many memes from the show, i instantly became a chainsmoker as you said in your analogy lmai
Yeah but we aren’t talking about Part 2 onwards, this entire video is an introduction + Part 1
@@Saltydkdan Sure, he’s pretty useless to the actual story in part 1, but it’s likely that at least Zeppeli would die if it weren’t for Speedwagon’s hot and steamy army abs to heat him up.
@@shmargletheone1378 ah good thing he is alive
I remember the first time I watched the anime, I was so surprised by the color changes and I loved it.
In case anyone doesn't know and is curious, the Snoop Dogg reference is "Doggystyle"
Yeah.
This is so relatable in that 90% of my media discoveries come from seeing a random tumblr post and thinking "that looks kinda neat".
@@nuibaba280 yeah I will always hold this against p1 anime. They treated it as some sort of prologue instead of its own thing.
Then id have to see jojo die again
@@dumboiii yes
@@ramimoussi7438 definitely disrespected
I love this video! I was introduced to Jojo recently and I absolutely loved the series.
can't wait for salty to talk about part 3 :D
FINALLY A CONTINUATION THANK YOU LORD SALTY... oh it's just a mash of the first two together....
Araki is an incredibly creative person with a clear passion for what he does and what he likes, and I feel David Productions does a phenomenal job of portraying that with their beautifully animated scenes, the incredible voice talent they hire, *and my fucking god those OPENINGS*
TL;DR JoJo good, you should watch it with a friend.
Jonathan my hero
Literally cannot wait until jojospective 2. Battle Tendency is my favorite part.
As someone who literally just finished the series. I love looking back to the start
I remember watching one of the older versions of this video, and it's the point that got me to actually watch JJBA. I had heard of it before, but wasn't sure I'd like it. Now I'm a fan for life. Thank you, salty.
Dire is everyone's favourite character because he has the ultimate combination of attack and defence
Dire has one of the best lines in jojo You fool...
You fell for it! Thunder cross sprrrit attack!
I wholeheartedly agree with the notion of most of the cast being one note characters. Most of my friends that haven’t been able to get into Jojo cite Phantom Blood as the place where they stopped. I have started to tell people to start on part 2 and then go back if they have the time because it is incredibly important to the overall story but it can be somewhat shallow with no prior knowledge of the overall story.
reliving the jjba obsession i had years ago oh my GOD
love seeing a video about jojo made by a fellow deranged person, the damage this series has done on my brain and love how you point out how fucking wild ep 1 part 1 is
WOAH, WAS THAT A JOJO REFRENCE?
Jokes aside, I throughly enjoy action animes as is
Jojo was no disappointment to that factor and I really loved it as a whole
Damn you Salty. Last years summer you got me into this hellhole of a series
thank you for motivating me to continue part 2 ❤️
Salty: Hamon is absurd and has no clear rules
*Hamon Beat has entered the chat*
the unscripted jokes and memes are hillarious but the scripted stuff is just as good if not better keep up the good work salty
YOOOOOO I’m super excited to see this! As a Jojo hyperfan I’m happy to see Salty still taking about it.
Salty: It's like having a sandwich, without the bread
Me a true JOJO fan: sir.... ISSSSS THAT A JOJO"S REFERRRRRENCE????
*Says that the sub has a tendency to be more unintentionally funny*
Meanwhile: "This'll definitely put the sting of defeat in his soul"
55:44
I think I've heard of that somewhere before... I think it was a book series?? About feral cats? Or maybe it was dogs.
for Jojo part 1, I actually love the Dub more
especially Dio's VA cause HOLY shit he's amazing
Awesome to see this series back!
bro SPOILS
Jonathan dying genuinely surprised me because like
We're not even halfway through the season holy
This video + other videos managed to get me into jojo around this year (currently at part 4),so yeah thank you salty for getting me to watch the show about buff men posing
This is a great christmas present, Salty. Thank you!
i appreciate that you dont shy away from criticizing the show, I hope that continues if these are to return.
Its good to see salty makein more videos more frequently more betterrer
PART 2 IS NEEDED I FUCKING love friendlocke but... I NEED PART 2 OF THIS
“Man what even is this england 1868 bullshit”
(Skips forward to time being accelerated to a point of infinity until the universe ends and restarts)
(Skips back)
“England, 1868”
The way I like to describe Jonathan is that he’s likable, but not interesting. It makes it so I can look back on part 1 fondly but it makes actually sitting through it a bit of chore.
I can’t wait for you to do a jojospective of part 2 it’s my favorite and what really got me into it
YES, glad you remember this video series, I remember watching the first version of this video on a car ride.
Part 2 was the best out of the hamon parts, because it had the time to learn how to properly use it. part 4 for the stands, because they had time to explore just how powerful stands are.
And now,eventually,1st of December 2022 Stone Ocean ends and who knows when the fuck we'll get animated Steel Ball Run
So I hope this Jojospective does continue! This was fun!!
Can't wait for the rest of part 6 to be animated, also neat to see funke mentioned here
BRO I JUST STARTED WATCHING JOJO A FEW WEEKS AGO YES
i thought the leaf hang glider made sense, since hamon travels best through things that are or were alive, and can be used to stick things to each other via conductive current. kind of like joseph's hair shield. or the wine hamon cutter which uses a liquid fermented from grapes, or even joseph's wool hat web
Finally I've waited for hundreds of years waiting for this exact moment. Now I shall commence my Made in Heaven plan and achieve Heaven
I still remember when my friend said that part 1&2 were bad I was a bit pissed bc he made fun of the two parts that had the best character Speedwagon
15:50 - 15:58 that was some EXTREMLEY clever foreshadowing
Over *The world?* *Time?*
Something funny to mention is that Yukako is (afaik) the first yandere and also (afaik) the first popular one too. Araki literally made tropes that lots of people use today. Props to him
Every time you appear on my recommendations, I get more and more proud of myself for subscribing to your channel
Ngl, you and a few other you tubers have made me want to watch Jojo, and I honestly don’t regret it.
"Thunder cross split attack" is all im gonna say on dire.
holy shit thank you i was just looking for some long form talking to listen to while playing games this is perfect i love jooj
I watched parts two and three expecting you to make new videos for them. You cursed me with the inability to stop watching JoJo just because you lured me in with the promise of new videos on the topic.
Was confused because I swear I saw it 2 years ago, that is because i did. Nice re-edit man
I just thought that The voice actor that said “goodbye jojo” sounded like abridged cell from teamfourstar
I am so excited to see you do more of this kind of stuff. It’s something I think you’re really good at!
Okay I can’t wait for part 2 ! I will tell you you’re not gonna want to pick out every single fight for the next parts, even though I feel like the run time will still increase dramatically 😭
God i love the limited 3d in this video essay. Its so charming
This video really made me admire even more Part 1, despite of still being one of my least favorite arcs from Jojo. I enjoyed a lot this video!
oh nice! ive literally only watched part 1, so this will be fun.
