      walmart and amazon both have free shipping on that turkey fryer, as do several other companies. I'm not sure why you'd need to pay for shipping when so many other places sell the same fryer

    Great Video... Thanks...
    Several years ago I purchased an electric turkey fryer from Wal-Mart. It was one of the Butter Ball Fryers that they sell. I got it for about $ 60.00.
    The turkeys I fried were about 12lbs. I did not need the larger fryer, the one that world fry the 12-13lb fryer was plenty big.
    I used the mix of Canola Oil and Peanut oil from Sam's Club.
    I have fried two turkeys with the same oil. They say you can use it up to 5 times before disposing it. make sure the oil is cold and put it into the original container. Also before storing the oil be sure to strain the oil. I used a big tea strainer with a funnel. That took all of the little stuff out of the oil.
    One good thing about the electric fryer is that you just set the cooking temp and forget it. You don't have to worry about propane.
    The fried turkey looked so good frying I decided to cut up 3 large potatoes and make a batch of french fries ! YUM YUM.. they were crispy and delicious.

    I think the cord is meant to be that short so you don't trip over the cord and spill the boiling oil?:)

    • @SBMfromCalifornia
      @SBMfromCalifornia 9 лет назад +6

      +Aden Claire
      Not really because remember it's magnetic.. so it's designed to pop off. It's short to save on packaging costs.

    • @doobieman69
      @doobieman69 8 лет назад +1

      +Aden Claire That's right. Same reason kettles have short cords.

    • @johnjohnson5857

      the magnet and short cord are both American safety standards

    • @K9Trooper
      @K9Trooper 7 лет назад +19

      The cord is short because the electric fryer draws so much energy. A longer cord causes resistance and will heat up. Causing a fire hazard or short out. The same reason you shouldn't use an extension cord. Length causes resistance and the coupling of the two cords increase heat and resistance as well.

    • @MichaelRGlatfelterJr
      @MichaelRGlatfelterJr 7 лет назад +5

      K9Trupper is right about the cord. You can always you an appliance extension cord. They are made with a heavier gauge wire and plugs. Just make sure to match the amperage of the extension cord to the amperage of the appliance you are using. They sell them at The HomeDepot, Lowes and other hardware stores.

  • @bigwes8989
    @bigwes8989 12 лет назад +3

    The short cord is a safety device. It's made so people or pets can't trip over it and spill oil. The magnetic connection is also on there for the same reason. That's why they don't want you putting an extension cord on it

    it all depends on where the fryer is. If you have a lower counter it should be easier. I unfortunately had to cook in that area of my kitchen. It was 19.78 lbs and took a little effort lowering in slowly.

  • @BillMan2002
    @BillMan2002 11 лет назад +7

    You can use it with an extension cord, Just make sure the Cord can handle more amperage than the cord on the frier itself

  • @xirtamtech
    @xirtamtech 7 лет назад +1

    the reason for the short cord is because of the AMPs that the electric element draws. It will make the cord hot, and if it were longer, it would melt. You CAN use an extension cord, but it MUST be a very thick one (larger gauge) to match the distance. Never use longer then you need, and use as big as you can get.... and monitor the cord for excess heat.

    How much oil did it take to fry the turkey? Was emptying it as easy as you thought it would be? Were you actually able to reuse the oil or was it a one time use only?

  • @cookingwithjackshow
    @cookingwithjackshow  12 лет назад

    It only uses 2.5 gallons. Yes, emptying it was a breeze. I put the oil container on a chair and set it under the spout. I let it drip in and at the end I tipped the whole thing to get the last few drops of oil out. It cleans easy but takes about 15 minutes to do it all.

    I own the newer version and freaking love it! I first used it last Thanksgiving, but have used it several times since. I took it to my lake house and had a huge fish fry with it and it did amazing! It's the lazy man's propane fryer. No need to watch temps, and you can use it anywhere!

  • @TheRealSmithFamily
    @TheRealSmithFamily 10 лет назад +13

    They redesigned this fryer. I have the newer style. The biggest change is when you remove the heating element and control, behind it is the drain now. The lid is now a solid piece of stainless and gone are the vents and useless window. Otherwise the unit is unchanged.
    The KEY is to dry the bird thoroughly and make sure it's close to room temp before submerging it into the oil. I also tip it slightly when removing it to get the oil out of the cavity of the bird.

    The one thing I really like is when you fry chicken normally you dip in egg then dip in flour. With this turkey you fry it without all the dipping which gets your fingers all messed up with sticky flour. Great review!! I have never tried fried turkey but I am sure I would just love this!!!

The lid on mine has a hinge in the middle that lets the lid fold up and my basket is mesh instead of a solid basket with holes. Hi Jack We love your show, that would be myself and my 8yr old daughter and my 9yr old grandson who lives with me. My question is now that you have tried the deep fry turkey and also cooking the turkey covered with parchment paper, which way do you prefer? It seems to me both ways your turkey turned out great, very moist. Keep the videos coming, you do a great job!

  • @inspector941

    I have the smaller version of this fryer. Love it. I like to cook a whole turkey breast that I first inject with a marinade. Not greasy and very moist. And of course, this electric fryer is much safer then the outdoor propane-fired fryers.
    Even if the cord was a foot longer, that would help. I have used a heavy-duty appliance extension cord with mine and had no problems. I keep the cord up and out of the way so there is no chance of it getting in the way.

  • @bmartin2949

    I've asked a few different maintenance guys at various places i've worked at. the reason they recommend not to use an extension cord is because a lot of people don't have a high enough rated extension cord for stuff like that: for a tv, or a radio, something like that would be fine, but you're using a significantly higher wattage. go to your local hardware store, and ask one of the folks there for the highest power cord rating they have. That'll be able to handle the current your machine needs. it'll probably be more than you think it should be though. the 15' i bought was something like 50 bucks, but there's a lot of copper in it, so it really does make it worth it. any complaints about it since the filming?

    Hi Jack, I have the same deep fryer as you, and I followed your instructions for deep frying my turkey. The joints and some parts of the turkey were still raw, and it came out dry. Tasty, but dry. I put it in the oven to get the turkey fully cooked. Everyone enjoyed it, however, I knew it should have been better. This coming Feb, we are going to do it again, do you have any suggestions about what I can do better. Thanks Big Nosh!

    My wife bought one and, like you, I thought the cord was ridiculously short. We had to buy a roll around cart to put it on in order not to waste counter space while it cooked and to be able to reach an outlet. And the magnetic break-away safety plug was a bit of a pain. The weight of the cord alone is almost enough to disconnect it. It heats the oil wonderfully though. At $10 a gallon, the oil needs to be used until it's repulsive.

      My 15 lbs fresh butterball came out really tender and juicy with a beautifully crisp skin. I used the peanut oil blend that home depot carries.

    Although, I will say that if you needed to use an extension cord, a way around it would be to use the extension you need, and then zip-tie any slack so that the 'path of least resistance' for the cord would be the magnet. That way, in a fall...the cord wouldn't extend to allow the fryer to reach the floor with the plug still in. Not sure if that makes sense...but it seems to be a way around the short cord problem.

    honestly the washer dryer is just considered more counter space when cooking. I use it all the time. I never am doing laundry while cooking. They just don't happen at the same time. The whole neighborhood was originally designed in the 60's and the women cooked and did the wash. I'm surprised they didn't cram a bed in the kitchen, too. LOL

    Great Video, I was able to purchase one at Meijer here in Michigan on clearance last year for around 30.00 and it was a steal..I love mine, turkeys come out juicy every time but the peanut oil is a bit pricey to begin with but it's worth every penny!!

    I might have missed it, but did you do anything to the turkey before frying. Seasoning? Injection?

    I use mine with a extension cord every time. The reason they tell you not to use an extension cord is because some people will buy a cheap low gauge cord. I recommend at least an 14 to 18 gauge cord and you will be fine. Most often I use mine outside and use a 25 foot cord.

      I believe you meant a 14 - 12 gauge extension cord.

      +netnole ! 14 GA @ 15' is probably the max I'd go. 16-18 GA is too small.

      It's all about voltage drop
      It depends how far the outlet is from your mains panel ..... At 1650 watts (this appliance's rating) and standard acceptable 5% voltage drop you could use a 75 foot long extension cord if the outlet was RIGHT at the mains panel ... if you have 25 feet of wire (inside the walls from the mains panel to the kitchen or outdoor outlet) ... then a 50 foot 14 gauge extension cord would be fine (for a couple examples) ...
      If you ponied up the expense for a (difficult to find) 12 gauge extension cord, and the house uses 12 gauge wire (which is popular in new homes) ... you could run 100 feet total house wire and extension cord combined.
      Hope that makes sense :)

    The fryer has metal sides... The ground prong prevent the metal sides from electrocuting you if there is a short in the wiring.

    you can use an extenton cord. they just dont want to risk saying you can and someone uses on that is underrated as that pulles over 1000w

  • @TheOGMattBurns

    You CAN use a heavy duty extension cord, just make sure it doesn't get hot. The reason the factory cord has that magnetic feature, is so that it breaks away easily if you trip on it. It prevents it from tipping over, or falling off the counter and burning the crap out of you. I think it's required by law, since I haven't seen ANY fryers without it.
