  • This realistic hickory leaf painting is getting me into the fall color spirit with this bright gold hickory leaf painted realistically. I'll also use a sepia and gray ink pigment pen to line in the details first. So come and long and see how I did it.

I'm so pleased that you painted Hickory leaves. I consider these leaves to be an underrated Autumn treat. Hickory has a delightfully shaped leaf and beautiful golden-earth color that is overlooked by many.

Another incredible piece! I find that a lot of my students like to immediately jump to doing dark values instead of building up the layers from very light to the darkest. I also reinforce what you said. The drawing is extremely important in a "still life" such as this one. Always enjoy your scriptures. This one actually has a connection to your work . Being aware of light is so important when painting. John 1:5-- In Him, was life, and that life was the light of mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Have an incredible Advent season!

I just want to thank you. A Lot of your techniques remind me of Illustrations I grew up loving as a child. By the time I got to art school they were so out of fashion, I don't think I could find a how to book in the Library that would have covered how you do what you do. These leaves were amazing. Thank you. You always find a way to re-energize me to move forward again.

This is inspirational, and SO useful! Yesterday I gathered some beautiful dried, gracefully furled leaves that my fig tree had shed for winter, and I had zero inspiration on how to render them! They're so attractively rolled and curled, cupped, with fabulous shadows. Now I can tackle the challenge!

Hi Steve! In Italy too fall is late. Your painting is amazing, wonderful choice of colours and I appreciated the lesson about how to correct mistakes. Botanical paintings are the thing that I paint better, and I love the design that nature offers, without becoming crazy to show them in the perfect outspread way that many botanical artists do. I love botanical paintings not too set up (I don't know if the translation is right, I mean too perfect, not relaxed).

@@FuriedHearts I don't think Arches differentiates between paper sold in France and paper sold elsewhere. I've bought Arches in Ireland, Austria, Germany and France and they've all been the same. The only thing that looks different here is the colour of the cover. Otherwise, the cover is identical. Arches always has French and English on the cover as it is here. I think it is just the lighting.

Most of what of what I am finding to purchase have a thin, adjustable base and I do not want one with drawers. Can you tell me the maker of it? Take a look at Sueellen Ross's book Paint Radiant Realism in Watercolor, ink & Colored Pencil (Northl Light Books 1999). It's for the advanced artist but contains lots of information.

Try Claudia Nice. She has several books on the subject on Amazon. Also, right here on RUclips, artist Peter Sheeler makes good videos on the technique. I also have a playlist for line and wash in case you haven't seen them all. ruclips.net/p/PLiMPR1KaCr-kWhvPYCWTycnEqXvVBNyDZ

I have a question, is there a way to remove watercolor on hot press?
