Thank goodness for a more objective review from someone I trust! Like others have commented, everyone else gushing and oooh-ing and ahhh-ing about these are sent free stuff and just want to keep getting free stuff. Lol.
Gah! I needed you today. 4 days into the school year and my preschooler and first grader are back at home and in qurantine for the next 10 days or until we get their test results back. I needed something to make me smile today.... "These pens better wipe my ass" accomplished that goal for today. THANK YOU
I have all three sets and I love how when they are dry you can go over them with another colour and it works so well. I'm very light handed so have not had any problems woth spattering. I use a paintbrush for delicate blending and the blender pen for bigger areas. I think each each to their own, we all get on with things differently :) I appreciate your honest review
I always feel vaguely vindicated when your opinion matches mine. I’ve been begging the people in groups to hold off on these until people who aren’t affiliated with A&O have tested them. Always appreciate your no-nonsense approach and honesty, Cindy. I won’t be buying theses, I’ll stick to my Poscas 👍🏼
Thanks for this honest review. A lot of big youtubers and instagrammers that I follow that reviewed these on their channel were sent the pens for free and are big Archer & Olive people in general, so they gushed about them. I like the brand too and own and use many of their journals but it still felt a little inauthentic. I bought one set, the .7 mm jewel one, but only because I had a specific monthly theme in mind. BTW I love your consumerism rants and feel the same way. I can honestly say I use everything I own, and only allow myself to buy stuff with a specific purpose in mind, not just to have all the things. Minimalist flex: I only own 15 rolls of washi. And I’ve used them all.
I was totally one of the ones who asked for you to take a look at these and I am SO THANKFUL you did. It's about the only honest review of this product I have seen. Honest in that you really took the time to explain them and talk about how they work and compare to other items.
When these came out, I didn't realize they were paint pens -- I thought they were brush pens. I'm SUPER glad you reviewed them, seeing as you've had so much experience with paint pens in general in your career, so you can really give us a good review. Thanks for the video!
I feel like the fancy packaging is pushing the high price point. It’s a big box and would take up more space than I care to use on my desk & I STOPPED hoarding packaging boxes no matter how good it looks. The recycling company got a ton of boxes one day and my shelves breathed life again 😂 If you take all 10 of these out of the box and keep them in a pen container like I do with pens of any type - they don’t look like a $30 pen set. They do look nice though. Reminds me of mildliners - I love white pen bodies. Not sure if I’ll go for these but if I did I would get the jewel set. That is a really pretty color set. My biggest thing would be wanting to know how long one of the pens lasts before running out to justify the price. Thanks for the review Cindy! Always appreciated!
I was never going to buy these pens, but nowadays I'm really enjoying watching your pen reviews even more. At a time when everyone's planning videos are a little more fraught, these can be so fun to watch! I'll bet more people are buying art supplies for their kids to use at home, too. Have you thought about suggesting a starter kit or something like that? Also, I wonder if maybe now is a great time for you to make a video about all your years working in grocery stores. Many more people seem to be respecting how important grocery workers are to keeping our lives running (in a way that was previously almost invisible to some). Obviously your experiences were in the Before Times, but so much must still be the same?
Plus you cannot buy just one pen if you run out of your favorite color, and you can't refill them. Not very eco-friendly. A handful of pens for that price? In a giant box
Thank you so much for this review! They had a few cons for me from the start ( price, cannot buy individual colours etc) but they are gorgeous colours and I love paint pens so I was debating if I should pick up a pack or not. They are hella expensive, with shipping and currency exchange, they come out to almost 65$ for me, the shipping is insane to Canada (and thats with the cheapest shipping which is 15$, the shipping goes up to 55$ depending on how fast you need them)! I've only seen reviews from people affliated with archer and olive and that can be hard to trust ( even the bujo people I watch often and trust). It is nice to get a review from someone who wasn't sent them for free and who doesn't have an affliate code for them. So as always, I appreicate your honest opinion, you have saved me 65$ haha thanks!
I'm not in the market for acrylic paint pens, but thanks to this review now I know a lot more about them than I did when I bought a Posca white pen to use as a white-out pen awhile back! And I also know I should give Posca another try. Thanks, Cindy - stay safe.
Thank you for such an honest review and for offering suggestions to try ONE first. I’m someone who sees something cute and buys all of them and then don’t use them so this was such a nice reminder.
I’ve been watching a lot of art and bujo videos this year and have definitely been getting the itch for some paint pens. I kept hearing about these, but was astonished at the price. I’m glad I saw your video before attempting to get any of them. I can always trust your reviews since you’re never sponsored by anyone, and you explain why you like or dislike things. I would’ve been pissed to get that packaging since they claim it’s eco friendly (I doubt the padding or the blending palette parts can be recycled), and that box is waaay excessive. I also didn’t like how the blending pen barely held on to any of the color. So whenever I decide to get paint pens, I’ll most likely stick with Posca. Delayed thanks for this video!
I've been waiting for your review. I became uninterested in them shortly after they were listed on the site because I found out they were just a paint pen. But I really enjoy your reviews and was not disappointed. Great review!
I so appreciated this video. I'll admit, I preordered these pens (all three .7 tip sets), having never used a paint pen before in my life. I was drawn in by the colors and by getting a preorder discount. I also went into it having my doubts because honestly, small biz/woman-owned biz or not, A&O is not my favorite brand. I believe in getting what you pay for and A&O is overpriced. By a lot. I'm going to have fun with these pens and I love the colors, but they're never going to be my go-to pens. They're too inconvenient to use. I noticed when I was trying to get them started that the points bent (?) a little and I also noticed a lot of spattering (which I learned from your video is par for the course with paint pens. Good to know.). I also thought the packaging was way excessive. What the hell am I supposed to do with those boxes and the padding??? I have no desire to get the bigger tips and frankly, I think they could have included both tip sizes since you can swap out the tips. Will they eventually just sell replacement tips I wonder?
Thank you for explaining the scratches! I thought I was doing something wrong and watched tons of videos and no one else mentioned that! Thought maybe I wasn't shaking enough but only happened with some! Then I thought maybe it was the tip so I replaced it. Still happened. Glad it is a paint pen feature and not a user error LOL I bought these from A&O when they had a big clearance on them and paid an average of $9 for each set. I like them but would never pay full price.
i just absolutely love the COLOUR range. the new warm and cool fall sets as well are just stunning. it tempts me mostly for that reason over any other paint pen.
Have you seen the micador paint pens? They come in 4 packs of 6 colours summer winter autumn and spring! The winter set are white and greys not great but the other 3 sets are good!
Yes I’ve been waiting for your opinion on these. I don’t know if I like them or not, but I buckled and bought all three. I’m actually uploading my vid on them soon too. Thank you for always inspiring me 💖
Thanks for always doing real life honest reviews. I’m going to try to get a couple fun colors I like at Michael’s and not spend so much on a pack. The price is definitely intimidating and I’d rather buy excellent quality watercolors that I will use much more. ❤️
Cindy, how is school going for your family? My teenager is also doing distance learning for now 🥴🥴🥰 Lol he is ready to go back, like your kids. Hope you’re all doing well! 🥰
Between the blending surface and the foam holder, it doesn't look like you can just chuck the packaging in the recycling, and as a hard-core packaging chucker, the obnoxiousness of having to tear out the non-recyclable bits way outweighs the fancy packaging for me.
For that price... these pens better do my taxes. Joking aside, thank you so much for this review. I was finding myself itching for a shiny new bullet journal from A&O (do I need one? no. Are they pretty? Yes.) and I started eyeing these paint pens. I'm so glad I watched this review. I'm tucking my wallet back into my purse and backing away slowly, I don't need or really even want these pens (OR a new bullet journal.)
I impulse ordered these after seeing all of the positive video reviews D: I was able to send them a cancellation e-mail before they shipped out my order so hopefully the'll be able to refund me, but I knew I should've dug harder for your review of these before I got swept up in the shiny new pen high. Gonna save a shit ton of money and buy the new Pentel Brush Pen colors instead, because I actually use those bad boys. Thanks for your honesty and really forcing me to be mindful about the pens I buy! (:
I’m suprised you said that the posca uni markers are cheaper. Because in The Netherlands they are as expensive as the archer & olive and in some shops the posca’s are more expensive.
I feel exactly the same about the packaging, totally excessive! I use a ceramic plate for mine. I still have the packaging the pens came in, just taking up space. I find the size is too ridiculously big to put on my desk, so I took the pens out. I just haven’t felt brave enough to chuck them out yet 😳
In my opinion, they’re not expensive. There are 10 pens in each box. The box is 35 dollars. That’s 3.5 dollars per pen. I live in Norway, here i pay about $5,35 for a Pilot G2 0.5 nib.... but that’s import fees and stuff that’s added on to the original value of the pen..
It makes a raised surface. It comes out pretty thick. I like the texture it creates but my books are usually all messed up from over using watercolour anyway
Hi Cindy, can you have a look at planners that is easy to get around the world and which are cheap. I’m looking for a planner for next year but I can’t find any that are not over £40. I appreciate your opinion. Thank you xxx

I wish I had found this video before I bought a set. These are awful, especially for how much they cost. I’m able to just fill in like 2 boxes on dot grid before having to the shake the pen again like crazy to get more paint out. Even just writing one short word with these is such a frustrating experience.
Really does take 85 years to get them going... I like them but I am glad I only bought one set. I can't get my head around how costly they are. The pens are socially distanced within the packaging though ;-) which is the ONLY reason to use such a ridiculously big box. Oh I also had the same issue with a tip pushing in the way your yellow one did - I contacted A&O and sent a photo and they sent me a replacement pen. oh man, I hope they are ok
I'm pretty sure it's just a normal back-to-school bug. My 6 year old catches everything within 50 square miles and shares it with his little brother.
Not interested in these as they are WAY overpriced! I just like listening to you talk about them;) good to see you Cindy!

I hate excessive packaging, "eco-friendly" or not.
SAME.
Reminds me of the UNI Emott felt tip pens - 5 pens for $15...wha?! Just get some Stabilos.
@@StatGoddess I managed to get 40 Emotts for £25 which was a lot more affordable. These are crazily expensive though.

I grab up the sharpie paint pens on sale. They seem to be more reliable and a steadier flow. I, too, burn through white pens.

I just got your lettering book in the mail, it's so cute!!

I was never going to buy these (hello spendy) but your review was the bomb. And so many hot tips on how to use acrylic paint pens.
You should make an pen person peeve video! That would be fun to watch.

Posca is my favorite! Perfectly opaque!
$35 now... buy Posca instead, or Amazon has Artistro paint pens with similar tips and they are great too $20 and more colors!
Been waiting for a review like this! +$30 for 9-10 pens since white comes in all of them. I would never. Also the packaging reminds me of mildliners!

Not over priced in the art pen world. Not hella expensive at all.
I was waiting for her to say they were $150+ for a set. But I guess you can get good pens for cheaper than these so 🤷♀️
@@amypennebacker4941 in the planner world you sure can get good pens for less. In the art pen world Copics are almost 10 bucks a pop.
How do they compare with the Flysea Acrylic paint pen? 6.99 for 12 or 10ish for 24 on Amazon?

Is posca a water based pen as well?
Do paint pens leave the color elevated or is it a flat application?
It makes a raised surface. It comes out pretty thick. I like the texture it creates but my books are usually all messed up from over using watercolour anyway

The aesthetic of the pen looks very mildliner-esque??
the color sets also seem to mimick the colors?

Id rather have the price point come ,down than pay for all that fancy packaging. They could charge at least $5 less I bet with simpler packaging.
I hate when companies put money into packaging. We don't paint with cardboard
They would be more affordable if they had used simple packaging. A chunk of what you are buying is actually the packaging and not the product.
