Hi. Have you planted your fruit trees far enough away from the fence? That rootstock can grow to a height and width of 12-15ft which will mean that as they grow it will be difficult for you to harvest the fruit - a good deal of it may well be over your neighbour's garden. I hope you don't mind me mentioning this but if they do need to be moved now is the best time to do it.
@ElliotNMatt Could you consider 're-locating them in the grass at the top end of your garden? Over the years you will need to carry out pruning as well as harvesting and it would really be much easier if you are able to walk all around the trees.
Also I covered the edges of mine as there quite sharp when leaning over them when planting or picking crops, any old tubing cut in half makes a great edging n no more sharp bits , if you have any spare wood or strong object I would put it to brace the middle part as this will make it stronger n not buckle when adding soil, good luck I’m sure it will look great when you have a bumper crop ❤
Wonderful, keep doing these gardening vlogs 😍 Been following for a few years and love the gardening vlogs, especially as I didn't have a garden. This year is the first year of having a considerably sized garden, so I'll be picking up tips from here. 💛🐾
Elliot, the farm where I pick berries puts them out AWAY from the wall. Both raspberries and blueberries grow to be quite big around. To assist with the acidity in your soil, manure goes a long way. In the Fall, I always put a layer of fall leaves, gathered in garbage bags. The good garden store does sell potting soil. I find that it’s not as robust as needed for in ground items. They recommended a different product more conductive. Also, there is special soil for trees that have the necessary nutrients. Because I only grew flowers, you’d have to inquire about fruit bearing tree soil. I think for the first few years, twice is sufficient - spring and fall. When I did my pear blossom tree, we did a water bag for ~ 60-90 days as it was so much warmer. Connecticut’s ground is mostly frozen now.
@ think about that when you plant. I know you bought “babies”. But like with the trees, they are going to need room. I.e. raspberries creep and spread runners. I did not realize that with lilies of the valley. The runners grew everywhere. When I pulled part of the plant up to move, then I had 2 complete areas where lilies were established. Not to mention, where I didn’t want them. It is quite a learning cycle. It seems like gardening becomes a daily task
Amazing, thanks a lot for all the very useful info. Just wanted to ask if you have had a look at what plants are harmful to cats. We got the list from the cat protection website and had to remove a lot of plants like spring onions, daffodils, even our beautiful hydrangea that seem to be harmful for cats.
Actually the soil you tested is acidic. 7ph is neutral. Over 7 is alkaline and under 7 is acidic. Though the accuracy of those stick probes isn’t superb. Best of luck.
Elliot think the green would look better for the raised beds when you get all done the dark will make your garden look smaller where as the light green which you have on the inside will make the garden look bigger. X
Trees need to be well away from the fence. They will growso far and then stop fue to lack of space! Blueberries need soecial soil not just ordinary soil. And they will not fruit fir about 2yrs!
@@habracken8004 it works through Galvanism. The two different metals create a sort of charge when exposed to the soil and moisture. The little photoreceptor cell on it is for measuring light levels.
Thank you Elliot I found that really interesting, glad to know I’m not the only one that finds putting together flat pack confusing 🫤. I’m out to prune our apple trees this weekend 😊

I thought about this too. I don't think he is leaving enough space between the fence and the apple tree.
Yes, I don’t have the room to plant anywhere else as it would cast too much shadow. Neighbour won’t mind harvesting from the other side.
@ElliotNMatt

Small garden problems, the big trees behind them would cast too much shade. And they in turn would cast too much shadow further into the garden
I mentioned this as well. So many things to think about. The 2 trees and fruit bushes could use a great portion of the backyard grass area.
Fantastic Elliot really enjoyed this vlog thankyou 😊💖
Elliot, maybe you could use those pegs they use for anchoring tents for your raised beds to keep them more stable.

Good luck!! As long as you are having fun & you can sit & watch everything grow. Very satisfying.

No space to do this really but can always dig up and move if need be

Wow, Elliot! I felt sorry for you! Putting stuff together like that can be tough!
A battery screwdriver would make quick work of that. A game changer!! 🇨🇦

Can the lawnmower make it through the gap between fence and planter
Going to bark it

Is the piece of wood for going across the middle of the raised bed? 🤔 Hmm, probably not - too long 😊
Too long so I don’t think that was its purpose
Acidic is pH 0 - 6.5
Neutral pH is about 7
Alkaline pH is abouve 7.5!!😢
Could that soil tester be solar?
Couldn’t see any solar panels on it
