    I don't know why it is that music theory is often made so complicated. The way you teach it, it obviously doesn't have to be. Thank you so much!!

    • @qorilla
      @qorilla 4 года назад +26

      Maybe because many teachers themselves don't have it clearly conceptualized in their heads.

      Music theory is complicated when you put everything together, but if deconstructed piece by piece then it’s easy to learn.

      +Lorenzo Tosi Also, it's a very pleasure to follow, no stupid faces and shit, examples all the time..all great!

    My piano teacher always said I had talent, but I ignored all the theory. Your lessons have really helped fill in all the gaps I created with my laziness. This lesson especially helped me to understand why I like the minor scale and its various incarnations more than the major scale. It also helped me to understand how some of my own music ventures never felt catchy or creative enough while trying to use minor scales. Thank you so much.

      +x1PMac1x Yeah once you get used to some of the subtleties in minor keys you realize you can do some really cool stuff with them. Good luck with everything.

    For some elaboration on why its called "natural", a natural minor scale is constructed out of the same notes as its relative major scale, but starting on the major scale's 6th degree.
    E.G. in the key of C and A minor respectively,
    C D E F G A B
    A B C D E F G
    Likewise, with, say, an A major and F# minor scale
    A B C# D E F# G#
    F# G# A B C# D E
    I hope this gives some clarification, as michael sort of skimmed over that a bit

To be able to give such clarity and insight into these age old subject matters, you are an exceptional teacher and most of all, someone who truly live and breath the subject. There are many good teachers out there but for me, you stand as the best. Thank you so much for enlightening me, almost 60 now, who plays a bit of guitar and piano.... music has a completely different dimension and meaning now for me after watching your music theory videos. if you play harmonic minor but start on the 5th note, you get phrygian dominant, a common arabian/egyptian sounding scale

    • @johangambleputty7658
      @johangambleputty7658 4 года назад +10

      @@jocabulous I believe you are thinking of a scale we use in Byzantine music for tones 2 and 6. The Phrygian dominant is very close, however, to make it more authentic play F# instead of F. So, G, Ab, B, C, D, Eb, F#, G. That's as close as I can get to explaining it in western notation, as byzantine notation is different (smaller intervals).

  • @ohwhen7775
    @ohwhen7775 9 лет назад

    I had never actually looked into why the melodic minor scales changes on the way down, but it makes sense now, because by going down the harmonic way you're essentially introducing the last few notes of the major scale which would confuse the listener I take it. Nice one man, you have a way with words when it comes to explaining theories, clear and to the point.

    Finally got it, thank you! Quick question: I'm playing guitar and there is this thing (I hope) called "phryigian dominat" which is basically a harmonic minor that is played in a different key then the root node. Do you have a video where you explain why this is (and why it sounds so damn tasty)?

    • @moadot720
      @moadot720 5 лет назад

      *Phrygian Dominant. Also, it DOES exist! It's the 5th mode of Harmonic Minor. I have a joke about it, too! However, Melodic Minor and its modes are WAY better than Harmonic Minor and its modes. Here's the video that started the Phrygian Dominant joke. It's on my "memez and jokez" playlist, and the intro is HILARIOUS!!!! ruclips.net/video/aCZezZf9bi0/видео.html And by the way, it most likely sounds good to YOU, because of the augmented second that's in all of Harmonic Minor's modes. But to me, that, the fact that it's a mode of Harmonic Minor, and the fact that it sounds "exotic", like it's from some dumb other country (I'm racist), is why I don't like Harmonic Minor or its modes.

      How about the egyptian/new Zealand #5 bb7 harmonic/ melodic secondary dominant sus4 fusion scale?! (Can you imagine dropping THAT in at band practice ?!!! -if only I'd not made it up and it was real lol)

    Hi Michael, not only is this video brilliant, but so are the comments below! I really appreciate your effort to educate and clearly you have a knack for it. Your explanations are very clear and really make me want to learn more. I've been brushing up on my theory for the past few weeks while I save some pennies to buy a digital piano. My new piano will arrive in a few days and I can't wait to get started! I used to play the drums as a kid/young adult and believe I have a good sense of rhythm/timing which I think is important. Thanks again!!

    OMG at the harmonic minor scale i was wondering WHERE have I heard this weird scale at?? I've heard it! I prematurely concluded it was from some spooky song. But in reality it was from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time in the water temple! If you go to the Water Temple Theme (literally youtube search this) you can hear @ 1:30 on sheikah(username) the harmonic scale being played!! It's mind boggling that the player was CLEARLY just playing that fancy scale... WOW!! THANKS FOR TEACHING ME THIS I ALMOST CLICKED OFF YOUR VIDEOS.. I really enjoy the virtual piano everyone has on the screen which removes your fingers(although having both is always best to see the hand shape) but I stayed on. I admit I was confused. But I just rewatched it again to make sure I didnt miss out on the whole purpose and it was very informative. GOD BLESS YOU THANK YOU!

    Really fantastic explanation of the three minor keys. The leading note in the harmonic minor has a very oriental sound. The melodic minor as a sort of middle ground. Well done
