Canadian PM Slammed for Pushing 'Sharia-Compliant' Mortgages for Muslims

- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government has sparked a backlash by announcing plans to introduce "halal mortgages" that comply with Islamic financial rules against paying interest. In the recent 2024 budget, the government proposed consulting with lenders to offer Sharia-compliant home financing options like halal mortgages aimed at helping Muslim Canadians become homeowners. Trudeau enthusiastically touted it as "a testament to our commitment to fostering an inclusive society where everyone has equal access to opportunities." Specific proposals include the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation providing Islamic banks funding to offer halal mortgages, potential tax changes for such products, and a "regulatory sandbox" for lenders. While some smaller institutions already provide Sharia-compliant financing, none of Canada's five biggest banks currently offer halal mortgages that avoid interest through alternatives like rental-based payments. The budget also proposed developing more Islamic banking offerings and establishing a national zakat fund for Muslim charitable giving, drawing criticism that the policies unfairly benefit one religious group. Supporters like the Canadian Islamic Congress, however, hailed it as a "historic moment" enabling Muslims "to participate more fully in the Canadian economy."

the aim of trudeau is to promote islam in canada, not the prime minister for all canadian.
The outrageous thing about the demand for halal mortgages is the understanding that the banks, the law system and the whole of society have to adapt to Islam and its rules.
In short they are trying to get out of paying fees and taxes, while taxpayers foot their bill. Same in Australia. Taking welfare obviously is ok

To make Sharia-compliant lending illegal would require specific legislation to ban those products. And that's only going to happen if politicians are given reasons to think that it's a significant problem. So banning them is only likely to happen after they have become mainstream enough to be easily available, and they have been given evidence that they are exploitative.

Islamic Republic of Iran banks interest rate and mortgages are over 20% per annum. If you have cash money invested in Iran you get more that 20% interest. Call it profit or what ever.
What they don’t mention is how they usually do these loans. You borrow 500k and the 30 year interest is 500k. You then take out a loan for 1m and no interest. The problem unless mentioned in the contract. You sell the house for 800k while you still owe 900k on the sharia compliant loan. Does the bank make the profit or do you from the original sale of 500k.
I find this quite interesting. I work in real estate and lot of the real estate agents, mortgage brokers and mortgage underwriters are Arab and or muslim. Who would have known this was against their religion

They basically opened up the way for everyone to have interest free loans. Because you can't make someone prove their religion, you can't prevent someone from leaving islam after the interest free loan

That makes no sense at all. Sharia-compliant financial products are not a better deal than regular ones. And even if they were, restricting them only to Muslim customers would almost certainly be a violation of equality laws in pretty much any Western country.

Anarchism is not "freedom", it is the opposite. Liberty is an environment in which your rights to your life and the pursuit of happiness are protected. That is even one working definition for "capitalism", because the protection of property rights, freedom of association, freedom of expression / conscience etc. naturally lead to people inventing, producing and trading material goods and services. Anarchism is the lack of protection for individual rights because it is the absence of a state that exists to recognize and protect rights at all. Markets cannot flourish in a state of anarchy (you might get cases of individuals trading in weapons or drugs here and there, but you don't get industry and wide-scale economic development). If they could then Somalia would be booming.
