@felicityfajkovic6228 He has to believe Erin and stay in denial for his own mental health. She is all he has left. This is very common in partial family annihilations.
@@lisas8244Exactly. In psychology, it’s called “cognitive dissonance” - when a person’s beliefs are so intrinsically tied up with their sense of self, that to deny those beliefs would cause their mind to completely fracture and destabilise. So when something happens which presents them with new information that contradicts their previously held beliefs, they can’t change their mind, because those beliefs aren’t just regular beliefs - they’re such an intrinsic part of that person’s sense of self, and such an important part of their life and their being, that in order to protect themselves, their mind has to find a way of reconciling that new information with their old, previously held beliefs - even if the two things completely contradict each other. This creates a dissonance between the new information, and the old beliefs - but no matter how illogical or irrational it is, no matter how many mental gymnastics a person has to do to get there, they will do it, because if they don’t, their mind will literally fracture. Cognitive dissonance can be a major trauma or stress response - such as in this situation. That being said, cognitive dissonance isn’t always a major trauma response. The brain can utilise cognitive dissonance as a sort of “mental comfort blanket” for any sort of situation where new information conflicts with a person’s sense of self/worldview to such a high extent that the person simply cannot handle facing reality…so their mind creates a protective illogical worldview for them (a sort of “mental comfort blanket”, of sorts) to help them face the cognitive dissonance between their old worldview, and the new information that they now have to face. For example, imagine a person who advocates to stop climate change…but who owns a business that pollutes prolifically and never recycles; a person who litters all the time, and flies everywhere on private jets to make deals with equally as unethical companies. Now, this person may truly, deeply believe, and care about the fact that climate change is man-made, and should be mitigated. They may be well-read on the issue, and lecture people about it. But they may also continue to do things that are harmful to the planet, and that they could easily modify in regards to their lifestyle, and business practices. This is where their cognitive dissonance fits in. They live a type of lifestyle that is important to them, their friends, family, and their image, and so is extremely important to their sense of self. However, they also care about the planet, and so those values are also important to their sense of self. But all the books, studies, and meta-analyses that they keep reading are telling them that their business and lifestyle are major contributors to our planet’s demise. People online are telling them that they’re the bad guy. So what do they do? Do they make changes? Do they stop their bad practices? I hope most people would…but in the example that I’m giving, this person doesn’t because their cognitive dissonance sets in. In this example, there is a dissonance between the fundamental core of their sense of self (their lifestyle, business, and climate advocacy), and the knowledge that they are the very problem that they care, and lecture, others about…and as a result of this, cognitive dissonance sets in, and the person’s brain makes huge leaps of mental gymnastics, simply because their brain cannot reconcile how they see themselves (which is as a businessperson, an entrepreneur, someone with a lavish lifestyle that impresses the people around them, and a good person who is a climate change advocate) with who they actually are (which is a hypocrite, and perpetrator against the very values they claim to uphold). And so their brain cushions them from the stress that this truth would cause them, and they continue to pollute the planet while pretending to be an advocate - all the while remaining thoroughly convinced that they are actually a good, beloved person who is helping the planet, and that everyone who criticises them is just a troll. People’s brains utilise cognitive dissonance for a variety of topics - from the extremely serious and trauma-related to the more superficial. If you’ve had a conversation with a human being, then you have almost certainly had a frustrating (or sad) conversation with someone suffering from cognitive dissonance about a certain topic. And someone has probably spoken with you about a certain topic that your brain has decided to cushion you from, as you remain completely unaware. All of us suffer from cognitive dissonance, in regards to some topic, in some area of our lives - hopefully not because of anything too majorly traumatic, and hopefully not for a selfish or hypocritical reason, like the one I gave in the example above. Sometimes people suffer from cognitive dissonance as a mechanism to protect oneself from traumatic experiences. Perhaps a parent wasn’t the good person we thought they were, and wanted them to be. One well-known example of cognitive dissonance occurs in cases of extreme cults/religiosity - when cult leaders claim that the world is going to end on a particular day, and nothing happens, you would expect most of their followers to leave the cult behind. However, to the astonishment of scientists, far from becoming more skeptical in these situations, most cult members (regardless of the cult) almost always become even more zealous believers! This is because these cult members have usually dedicated years, or even decades of their lives to these cults, cut off their families, given all their money to the cults, engaged in hard labour, and made their belief in the leader’s prophecies such an intrinsic part of their being and sense of self, that to admit to themselves that the cult leader was not a real prophet would literally cause their minds to fracture. So to protect their brains from this highly stressful situation, their brains create a nice little comfort blanket for them in the form of cognitive dissonance. And yet, although we may not all suffer from cognitive dissonance to that much of an extent, we still all suffer from it - every single one of us. The scary part is that none of us are able to know how cognitive dissonance is affecting us, or how much it is affecting us. It is possible to eventually find out, but doing so takes an immense amount of introspection and work on oneself, and even then you may still suffer from cognitive dissonance in some areas of which you are unaware. You have to be very willing to listen to the constructive criticism of other people, of professional psychiatrists and psychologists, and be willing to take things on board that you might not want to hear - and that’s after spending years establishing a long relationship with a very good professional who you can trust. That’s why it is really important to be as aware as possible of cognitive dissonance, to always try and work on oneself, to question oneself; and to make sure that one’s arguments adhere to the Laws of Logic, and are as scientifically accurate and reputable as possible. It’s also important to take pride not in seeming to be right, but in holding as accurate knowledge as possible about the universe. Too many people these days don’t care whether they’re right or wrong - they just want to appear right in front of others. However, I think there is great value in being proved wrong by someone who has better arguments than you do. I always appreciate it when someone demonstrates that I’m wrong about something, because they’ve allowed me to discard inaccurate beliefs, while embracing new, more accurate knowledge. I think that wise people shouldn’t need the applause of others. People should just want to gain as much accurate knowledge as possible, about as many topics as possible; and share what they’ve learned, while also hoping that others will share what they have learned with them. And that, I think, is the best way to ward off cognitive dissonance…though no one can ever truly be free of it. The less one thinks they are susceptible to it, the more likely they are to be its victim.
I first heard about the Caffey family on Dr. Phil and was also surprised that the mastermind was a teenaged girl. However, ever since I started reading studies talking about women and crime, Erin's case is not at all as isolated or surprising. According to a lot of these articles, women who kill plan everything out and specifically target those that are close to them. Even the belief that women serial killers being rare is a wrong and outdated opinion.
@@cheridehart7771 I think she might best be described as a domestic terrorist. Although had she not been incarcerated could easily have made the jump to serial killer.
I’m a parent and I understand that Terri doesn’t face the cold hard truth. No parent wants to believe their own child is capable of such pure evil against her family. I believe Erin is evil. Look at some serial killers, they can be the nicest people and turn it off all in one fell swoop. She has no remorse. The only thing Erin regrets is her father living.
So instead of learning you stupid vagina you choose to basically no matter wat these products can do thell always be beyond reproach. Yeah right. My fucking kid do this shit I light em up-myself. All y'all worthless offspring. Sick.
@candacehandyside903 Actually she has been astonished that her father has stood by her. As much as a sociopath can feel remorse, the unconditional love that her father has shown her has made her feel shame. What the father has chosen to do has actually had the effect on her that him being filled with hate and bitterness would never have achieved. Now she has to live every day with the fact that she had this awesome, loving dad all along and every time she sees him she is faced with the reality that she destroyed his life. It's a bitter pill to swallow even for a bonafide sociopath. Karma is real.
@@lisas8244 I’m fully convinced she doesn’t have the capacity for real emotion or empathy. She has her dad wrapped around her little finger. Until she comes clean and admits she was the ringleader, her chances of getting released when she’s 59 are slim.

Terry better get a clue. He may, when he’s older, find himself the victim to a nefarious plot by Erin to inherit the whole shebang. Now wouldn’t that be nice for her? I don’t think the years have mellowed her out. She feels “entitled” to be protected and coddled.
Terry has PLENTY of time to make arrangements for all of his intrests/belongings to go to his new family, and to prohibit Erin from profiting a single cent.
I think it's difficult for Terry. He was attacked, witnessed his family being murdered, then discovered that his daughter was the one that ordered for the entire thing. He's grieving for the family that he lost and for the daughter that he loved. Sometimes, it's difficult for people under normal circumstances to realise the truth regarding somebody they loved. That includes Terry who seems incapable of coming to terms with what happened to him and his loss... and that included the actions of his daughter who seems to not care about what she did. It's not that Terry should get a clue as much as Terry needs to get help to understand what happened to him and come to terms with both his grief and pain. I believe that it's difficult for this man to see his daughter as a conniving murderess that feels no empathy for what she did (did you watch the Dr. Phil episode regarding this case... she was so cold).

Sad and tragic all the way around, and especially since I just lost my dog after 14 years, I was so sad about Max.
she went and had sex with the murderer right after. if that doesn't show her hatred for her family i dont know what does. after it was done and she knew don't Charlie "blowing smoke" she had sex with him. to question one killers ability to trade your kids for his while wasn't trading your sons and simultaneously life to be on the side of your daughter who had them murdered is just ignorant.
I think God did help Terry live. Not to stand behind his daughter, but to bring her justice. Doesn't seem fair that she gets out at 59 and the others won't while it was her idea. The whole thing is messed up.
16:55 , Can someone explain this part to me? Is it literally just charlie’s friend asking charline and erin to come round or am I missing some undertones. Thanks.
I hope it is mental torture for Erin, she's getting out in several years time, lot's of time left to contemplate why she sacrificed her entire family. I read one of the boy's was offered $2,000 to take part, he took it in order to pay chld support he owed. What a mess these young people created in their early lives. So sad for the wife and young boys murdered by these mentally unwell young men, so many lives ruined, and for what?
I live in New Hampshire, USA. I have a couple of ideas for podcast: 1. Pamela Smart had her teenage lover murder her husband. She was his teacher. 2. Christopher Benard murdered his sister, niece and nephew in his home.
Apart from it being an insane plan, I'm stunned that Erin and crew thought murdering her family was a better plan so she could be with Charlie, over and above everything else. Unless you're a criminal mastermind, then it's very unlikely you'll get away with it, and in this case it seems they had absolutely no idea of what would happen after committing such an act. Admittedly, presumably they didn't expect Terry to live, and perhaps Erin had intended to say she wasn't at the house at all that night. But regardless it shows just how immature they were, not even giving a moment's pause to how their own future's may hang in the balance, it would seem. I've seen her interview with Piers Morgan and can see how ppl may be swayed by her butter-wouldn't-melt little girl act. But she's exactly where she should be as an evil, lying, manipulative murderous person. I guess Terry has to reconcile with what's happened to his family any way he can, and if continuing to believe in Erin and love her is the way, then so be it. He doesn't need to explain himself to anyone.
It is not strange in the least; my mother gave me a home education with only books and an exam once a day when she wasn't on hospital shift as a nurse. I've never had a computer, and do not miss it. Prefer a hardcover to a Kindle tablet.
I mean, i dont know what i would do without youtube in particular because my daughter is great at math and i suck. That plus my husband having a weird work schedule could end in disaster if i didnt have youtube to help sometimes lol. That said, theres a lot you can do without computers!!!! I guess technically you could say my family does it basically computer free. We use thr occassional youtube video when my seventh grader needs math help, i cant help and my husband isnt available, but thats basically it as far as what we need computer/internet wise. Both girls do watch some science/history documentaries on streaming services but if we didnt have internet/tablets i could probably find the same ones, or something comparable, at the library if needed.
I did something similar to homeschool but unlike the story we did not have a computer because of financial issues. I was tutored by my grandmother who used to be a teacher back then. It was just plain old books and photocopies of pages from books we couldn't afford.
I don't know how Terry could give her a minute of his time. She's an evil psychopath. She doesn't deserve to have him stand behind her. He should have gone in, said his piece then walked out, never looking back. That's what she truly deserves. I would do that with my daughter even though it would kill me but when somebody is that far gone into psychopathy and has no empathy or basic respect of others and they will feel entitled to receive the attention of supporters, not remorseful or grateful. I wish she had been 18 when the crime was committed so she also could receive the death penalty. A person who can carry out something like this on her own family no less, is not redeemable and has no value to anyone on this planet.
The father certainly has the wool covered over his eyes ,did he not hear how she thought its was so Awesome seeing house in flames after them all being murdered...hope she rots what a malivative nasty piece of work Rip to all those that perished 😢
I have a difficult time believing that last account of a surviving page from a favorite book of Terry's wife with the edges burnt just fluttering against a tree? You see, I've lost everything in a fire! A piece of a photograph, stuck to several more, due to water damage from the firetrucks is possible after sifting through several feet of soggy ashes. But not Months later after the Property is Bulldozed over. This is made up to make a guy feel better. Perhaps, this is where Erin inherits a piece of her Father? And why he finds it so easy to believe her version of events? Even after Erin smiles at Dr. Phil when he asks her if it was her idea and plan to Murder her Entire Family? And why she nodded yes while whispering; " no ". The human Brain doesn't lie.

That "Father's Day" letter was so patronising! If my kid had participated in the annihilating our family (including me), receiving drivel like that would pretty much seal their ⚰ in my mind. I understand teens' brains are still developing, but there's a line to teen rebellion and Erin very much crossed that line. At least she can date who she wants now.
dude there is no normal teen that does this shit...i m 28 now and never ever have i heard anyone doing this shit in our teens, she was just a fake piece of shit
What a bunch of nitwits those juveniles were, ruining their lives and everybody else's. Sad part is that they can't blame their actions for what happened on a history of drug abuse. They acted pretty much in a stone-cold sober state of mind. That father is ignoring the fact that his daughter showed no evidence of being drugged according to the toxicological tests and that her garments did not reek of smoke as they should have had she been inside a burning house like she claimed, making her a liar. He does not want to accept the fact his daughter is a calculated cold-blooded killer who goaded that group into murder for her own selfish ends. What kind of leader of a Christian Church is he, anyway? If he had any belief in what the Bible states, he should know that all is not hopeless and that there's going to be a resurrection so it means that he could see his dead family again instead of saying he will never see them again. Apparently, he has no belief in the religion he's trying to teach to others. While my aim is not to pick on him, I did hear some inconsistencies in this video I wanted to address, and now I'm done with it.
Interesting, she could have had the dog killed to prevent him from alerting the family.... but she was ok to let the dog live, and not her parents and family. Awful absolutely awful
The letter she wrote to him is chilling. It's clearly created to minimise her own role, and to manipulate her father. I get that he'd want to believe her but I don't think God says you should blind yourself to reality.

Jesus said we must pray every day the pray he has taught " .....but deliver us from evil". People don't comprehend that Jesus who is God in flesh still told us to pray this. This story is the reason why!
This poor man can't wrap his head around the fact, his daughter was the mastermind! What kid thinks taking out their entire family is actually an option? A PSYCHOPATH! Apparently it's easy to get three teenagers to do the deed! These kids didn’t have a brain or common sense between the four of them! Not one of these dummies put a stop to this! They're all psychopaths, I couldn't ever do what they did! As I'm sure the majority of society couldn't either! May the Caffey family RIP!

I will never, ever, ever be able to understand how people are able to believe in a God that's supposed to be omnipotent and wholly benevolent. There are few things I'd like more than to have faith, but I CAN NOT. How can anyone?!? I feel like the brains of truly religious people must be wired completely differently than mine.
First of all: People DO get away with things like this all the time, so its just naive to think that its beyond the realms of possibility.

The reason I comeback to these podcast once in a while is because of the twist. Love listening to you
What a psychopath! She's a absolute monster.
What specifically made the psychologist/psychiatrist (I forget who evaluated her) stop believing her and know that she was lying?
Their education and their experience dealing with these sorts of people, I reckon?
I wondered the sake thing. The nature of the crime is enough to change a professional opinion about her?
Unfathomable. Unfathomable. Horrifying. Heartbreaking.
41:45 After the commercial.
I was not expecting that plot twist of Erin being the mastermind.
@@TiffWaffles Erin was not a serial killer.
@@cheridehart7771 I think she might best be described as a domestic terrorist. Although had she not been incarcerated could easily have made the jump to serial killer.
@@cheridehart7771Tiffwaffles did not say Erin was a serial killer. She’s saying women are just as capable as men when it comes to killing others.
While I believe in forgiveness, and if that’s his path, I won’t fault him. But the fact she asked her ex boyfriend to kill her parents, and even her dad hearing it for himself and still believes it was all Charlie’s idea shows how manipulated he has been by Erin. She even tried telling him to not listen to Dr. Phil. She is broken. I hope she never gets released.

I'm crying as I'm listening to the confession regarding the little brothers 😭😭😭😢😢😢

Everybody seemed surprised that Erin was in on it and that was the FIRST thing I thought. Maybe I"m watching/listening to too many of these, lol. Especially Casefile, where they tell it in such a way that you are actually waiting for the twist. Sad and tragic all the way around, and especially since I just lost my dog after 14 years, I was so sad about Max.
I could listen to you read the back of a paint can.
#TiL If you punish your daughter and she doesn't react, you're already dead.
she went and had sex with the murderer right after. if that doesn't show her hatred for her family i dont know what does. after it was done and she knew don't Charlie "blowing smoke" she had sex with him. to question one killers ability to trade your kids for his while wasn't trading your sons and simultaneously life to be on the side of your daughter who had them murdered is just ignorant.
They sounded like good well balanced people. I hope that Terry and Max were okay.
Terry married again and has four children.
I think God did help Terry live. Not to stand behind his daughter, but to bring her justice.
Doesn't seem fair that she gets out at 59 and the others won't while it was her idea. The whole thing is messed up.

Good story. Wtf is with am ad every 30 seconds.
16:55 , Can someone explain this part to me? Is it literally just charlie’s friend asking charline and erin to come round or am I missing some undertones. Thanks.
God didn't take his family. His daughter and her cronies did.
The Dad still stupidly believes his daughter didn't plan all of this.
I was thinking about this exact case some days ago.
I rather have the death penalty. Life in prison would be torture.
@@margaretr5701 yeah I agree with you on that.
That letter she wrote is psychotic
Brilliant 👏👏👏
I live in New Hampshire, USA. I have a couple of ideas for podcast: 1. Pamela Smart had her teenage lover murder her husband. She was his teacher. 2. Christopher Benard murdered his sister, niece and nephew in his home.
Thanx Edinburgh lass.
The Death Penalty is also murder. Killing another person is never appropriate. Civilized countries have abolished it
Apart from it being an insane plan, I'm stunned that Erin and crew thought murdering her family was a better plan so she could be with Charlie, over and above everything else.
TOO MANY ADVERTS
Very, very strange that they did not have computers in their home, especially for home school!
Who else loves the way Casefile says his 'double D' on some words ending in the letter 'D?'
I certainly do.
Happy Father’s Day? Seriously?!
Well, he did remarry and has four more children.
Tooo many ads.
I sure hope she never is released until she tell The truth, because the truth will set you truly free! Can I get a amen!
She was scared when she found out her Dad didn't die. She knew she was going to get the death penalty.
I'm glad for us Erin will be a very old woman when she's released, if at all. She is truly a danger to anyone she's around.
"It's not your fault. If anything, it was mine."
Jesus f**king Christ.
I wonder how the murdered family members would have felt about the DP. They took away their lives. They should give up their own.
Omg with the fucking ads!!!!

I really tried to listen but the adverts kill this channel
I'm far from a pious man, but I can only admire the strength that religion can give to people
Interesting, she could have had the dog killed to prevent him from alerting the family.... but she was ok to let the dog live, and not her parents and family. Awful absolutely awful
I'm horrified
The letter she wrote to him is chilling. It's clearly created to minimise her own role, and to manipulate her father. I get that he'd want to believe her but I don't think God says you should blind yourself to reality.

I will never, ever, ever be able to understand how people are able to believe in a God that's supposed to be omnipotent and wholly benevolent. It's been said a trillion times before, but I'll say it anyway: With all the extreme suffering in the world, such an entity simply cannot exist. There are few things I'd like more than to have faith, but I CAN NOT. How can anyone?!? I feel like the brains of truly religious people must be wired completely differently than mine.
