    Each month The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) hosts a Meet the Scientist Webinar featuring a researcher discussing the latest findings related to mental illness.
    In May 2017, BBRF featured the research of Dr. D. Bradford Reich of McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He presented BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER: DIAGNOSIS, COURSE, AND TREATMENT.
    Dr. Reich briefly reviews the history of the concept of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), the symptoms associated with this disorder, and how these symptoms may change over time. In addition, he presents some of the theories of how patients develop BPD and some of the treatments shown to be effective for borderline patients.

    I went to the doctor the other day to get a referral for a psychiatrist. I’ve been diagnosed with depression and anxiety for years. I wrote a very long list of my symptoms and had him read it. I told him I think I have bpd. He argued with me and told me my symptoms are normal symptoms of someone with depression. Yet I have almost every single symptom in this video

      Exactly,I have bipolar 1 But I am experiencing borderline personality disorder also.I told my Psychologicist last week let talk about BPD and she promise me.We talk to today and she ignored me.I told her next session we must talk about borderline personality disorder for my diagnosis of it along with bipolar 1.So next time she call for my session I will let her talk and talk less because I feel ignored anyway.And if she continue to ignore me I will fire her and get another Psychologicist.Because I constantly feel worst after I talk with her.

      BPD research is obtuse. How close do you fly to bipolar 2 before you start interrogating the evidence harder? BPD research needs to take off the bipolar blinders and be more suspicious of the ballooning similarities. It's like watching a driver drifting into the other lane. The way things are headed BPD DSM 6 will just be a straight up copy paste of bipolar 2, but the BPD researchers won't even notice. We have better science than this, it's like BPD research occurs in some kind of vacuum.

    • @scarletsletter4466
      @scarletsletter4466 3 года назад +3

      This is absolutely my view on BPD. I'm a neuro, not a psychiatrist, but in the scope of practice I've worked with a psych who frequently treated BPD with generic buprenorphine (Subutex is the name brand you mentioned). For reasons that are not fully understood, buprenorphine tends to stop a wide range of impulsive & addictive behaviors. It's used for opiate addiction, obviously, but it's also seen success for alcoholism, gaming/ gambling & other compulsions & behavior disorders. Now, we could argue whether this is happening as a result of blocking the opioid receptors, therefore the patient doesn't feel as much reward from the behavior or drug of choice, OR, whether the use of the opioid simply improves the patients' sense of well-being & reduces the impulsiveness, basically creating "space" for the patient to respond thoughtfully, much like mindfulness meditation.
      I'm a functionalist, so I don't really care much about the mechanism of action as long as the medication is safe & effective. We've seen patients getting good results on just 1mg of buprenorphine daily. I certainly can't diagnose anyone or recommend meds over the internet, but any of you who are struggling with this should consider asking your physician to consider low dose buprenorphine. The generic in the US can be purchased for about $10 per month, even without insurance

    • @loopbasedzero
      @loopbasedzero 3 года назад

      @@scarletsletter4466 perhaps with Biden's new leniency on FDA regulation of Suiboxone prescribing there will be more Suboxone out there, and more willingness to use it off label. The important thing, in my mind about the mechanism of Suboxone is the agonist antagonist structure of the drug. It used to be that prescribers thought that the value was in Naloxone to block the effects of opiates, however the value appears to be in the buprenorphine to actually assuage an opiate receptor deficiency in the patient.

      Omg. That you would mention this… Is amazing. I have positive the same thing. That INFJ is a result of nurture,
      I wrote this to my closest friend after sending this video.
      This is me. Sadly, it is nurture, (or lack there of). Coupled with I think, genetics passed down. I will overcome it, but relationships do not seem to be my strong suit.
      I am_INFJ/T
      “Turbulent. Which is in line with borderline, BPD. I don’t see how a relationship would be sustainable, and yes, abandoned as a child. I had several caregivers who are not my parent growing up. And often unwanted. So when learns to people please,
      Walk on egg shells, what does helped me, has been self-determination, and surprisingly, stepping out of my shell through musical performance. No one can deny art. Thank you Sarah and all

      Me as well. Same.
      Art kind of helped me, self determination, to break out of the shell I was placed in. I hope you enjoy this, I am BPD. No one can deny or take away what you created yourself. It will make people envious of you. But for me, just cultivating art help me stepped beyond the smallness I was told to stay in.

    Ummm, a lot of this is wrong. A lot of people with BPD are very aware of the needs and emotions of others! That's because a lot of BPD patients are empaths. BPD is a spectrum disorder. That is extremely important to mention. My family member who has low spectrum BPD is always aware of others' needs and emotions. And his own. He is also an empath. He also has always known who he is and isn't prone to arguments and chaotic relationships ( he actually hates arguments). In contrast, I had a high-spectrum BPD boyfriend. Totally different deal. Disappeared on me constantly. Kept saying that he didn't know who he was as a person which I didn't understand! He was manipulative--- he told me that if I would buy an expensive Italian made semiautomatic coffee maker (with my own money) he would not marry me, because I was proving irresponsible with my $. I drove a 20 year-old car and lived in a bachelor/one room apartment. I was NOT irresponsible with my money. He threatened to break-up with me if I would spend money on certain things, even though it was my $ and I wasn't buying anything expensive. If I compare my family member who has low-spectrum BPD to my ex-boyfriend who has high-spectrum BPD it is like day and night. My family member is emotionally sensitive and so was my boyfriend so they have that in common, but my boyfriend would not allow me to talk about certain things because he didn't want to hear them/discuss them and he would threaten to throw himself in front of a train. My family member has never done that. Never. My boyfriend didn't stick with therapy and did a lot of self projection on to me and also seemed to twist what the therapist said in the sessions to whatever pleased him. He also didn't take his meds properly. He was addicted to alcohol and pot. He ripped into me because I didn't drink nor do pot even though he knew that from my match.com profile and I had also brought it up numerous times in person. I was also on medications which were metabolized by the liver and I could not take a sip of alcohol because the result would be hepatocellular safe or death. He didn't care about that but rather said that he wants a girlfriend with whom he can have a drink after a long day at work. He pursued me like crazy on match.com and I rejected him a few times before giving in. Even then he wanted to meet right away and I said no, we have to talk on the phone to get to know each other better first. My family member has never ever acted like that and is compliant with treatment. Very different people both with BPD but varying degrees of BPD. It makes a world of difference. I am not saying that my family member is a saint because he is not--- he is afraid of arguments, hates chaos, doesn't know how to always stand up for himself and is still seeking love and approval of his cold, uncaring (to say the least) parents. But he doesn't disappeared on his girlfriends. He doesn't force them to drink or smoke pot. He isn't manipulative like my ex-boyfriend.

    The abusive background is severe sexual abuse, often in very early childhood.

    • @ConnieWobbles
      @ConnieWobbles 4 года назад +7

      That's not always the case. Not everyone with BPD has experienced sexual abuse. I personally believe that most people with BPD have experienced a form of abuse, but that can be in other forms such as emotional neglect or physical abuse that's non sexual and simply violent or invalidating. I believe most of the evidence points in the direction of a form of abuse but there are other issues that are listed such as issues with attachment as a baby. I'm no expert, just listing what I've learnt so far.

      Connie H The current research shows 99 percent cent of BPD sufferers who present to psychiatrists have a sexual abuse history however that only is revealed after in the second or third year of therapy.

      Hi Margaret, that's interesting to know. I haven't come across that type of statement as yet, but I take on board what you've said. I myself have BPD and didn't experience and sexual abuse, and I have a family member who also experienced non sexual abuse, so we must be in the percentage who didn't experience it. Most of the info I've come across so far has mentioned sexual abuse as being common, but lots of other causes have been listed on everything I've read, or watched, so I'm surprised to hear your views. But as I say I don't consider myself in any way knowledgeable on the research, I'm still learning and mostly understand my own struggles with it atm.
