      Agreed. Something happened between about 91 and 94. It's like the entire game changed overnight. Yeah, I know there are conspiracy theories, but whatever the case, it changed really fast. All of a sudden you couldn't have music like this be mainstream anymore. I don't know exactly what happened, but whatever it is seems to have permanently made hip hop less than what it could have been.

      I'm a mixed dude (half North African and white and look Puerto Rican/Hispanic) and grew up poor in the hoods of DC/Maryland. I naturally was around lots of Hip Hop in the 90's but once Nirvana's Nevermind came out I got into Rock then into punk rock, heavy metal, GO GO (DC music!), Blues, Jazz and for Country some Johnny Ca$h. As long as the music sounds good I like it whether it's popular or not. I grew my hair out long, wore my favorite rock band t shirts and also naturally had an Urban ebonic talking side to me while not sounding overly Urban to the point of not being able to understand what the hell I was saying 😂 I also love Hardcore music like Madball, Agnostic Front, Cro Mags, Bad Brains (are considered punk rock, reggae and Hardcore which is what made them so special other than the fact they were 4 black dudes from DC that wore long dreadlocks like Rastafarians but played some of the most manic and aggressive punk rock you could ever hear back in the 80's!).

    I appreciate these artists so much more as an adult....in my youth gangsta rap was everything, and the "alternative rap" was an afterthought...Every rap song talked about "my nine" and "smokin a fool"...wich is fine, i still love gangsta rap...but seeing the devastation of violence in the streets makes me appreciate that these men tried to go a different route with their lyrics!
    Think about it...most of them KNEW they werent gonna make crazy money if they werent doin gangsta rap..yet they chose to do conscious music anyways.

      That's a plus Cuz! I think about it as you laid that out - with NWA, Eazy, Too Short, E-40, Spice One, Compton's Most Wanted, Cube - it went on and on. Then you had Illegal, EPMD, DMX, Naughty By Nature, Eric B and Rakim, LL, D-Nice, and others like BlackMoon, Gangstarr, Jay Z and Nas, AZ and your girl Foxy, it went on and on from Gangsta Bangin, to Underground, Hip Hop Hardcore... then there was Public Enemy and Kane.
      But the Native Tongues??? That was Heaven! They were a sanctuary! They, along with Christian artists like Kirk Franklin, BeBe and CeCe Winans, even some R&B Artists - they balanced the Street Digest of Gutta Reality. GOD I miss them all! Every one of them!
      The Jungle Brothers, Leaders of a New School, Tribe, Queen Latifa, Moni Love, Digable Planets, Common, Phacyde!

      Not Old School. This is like third gen Rap. You had Sugarhill, Spoonie Gee, Treacherous Three, Grandmaster Flash + as real original old school, then RUN DMC, Schoolly D, etc as "New School," then you had this, which is "Golden Era" ca. 1987 (starting roughly with My Melody, IMO) up to about 1997 (Blahzay Blahzay, IMO) after which you get into Gangsta Rap which I never cared for. Definitely some arguments where the borders are but that's the basics.

      It had it's share of problems, but human brain is built so that it tends to forget all the negative things. For example, in the 90's the world suffered its worst depression. Many people lost their jobs, their homes and their marriages. People were involved in debts and suicide rates were at all time high. Crime waves sweeped accross the world. There were several genocides committed all around the world. Bullyting wasn't a regognized problem yet in schools or in work places. Women (and men) got sexually harassed on a daily basis. Gays/trans etc. were still treated as a sickness and AIDS killed you within a year or max two.

    • @Hausbrauen
      @Hausbrauen 3 года назад +9

      @@Sc0pee Nah... nothing you mention is unique to the 90's -- *that's just the cruel world we live in every decade, and nearly all of that is far worse today.* The 90's was the greatest time to be alive for many people, myself included. Regardless, when someone looks upon any period of time fondly, try not to rob them of that. Some people falling on hard times right now need all the positive memories they can get.
