I missed out on a KX1 two years ago… and it haunts me. I love my KX2, but want just ‘one more’ radio… the KX1. My other QRP radios are great… the QCX Mini(s) 20 & 30m, the MTR3b & a Weber 20/40 MTR dual-bander… Such obsessions are beyond most peoples understanding. But when bitten by the QRP bug, you just have to scratch that itch. Now I know you understand. (I watch your videos). So for now, I’ll continue my quest for my KX1. 72 de W7UDT (dit dit)
Love that little rig. I think you’re right about using a ground radial just to bleed off the rf. Almost sounds like it’s running the chassis of the rig. That looks like a peaceful place to be.
Tom, wanting 30m for the MTR3B with this antenna I used a micro banana plug to make a link for 30m in the 40m EFHW. I used 3/16" para cord to make a strain relief. Very good addition for less than an ounce. FB on KX1.
I agree with bleeding the ground with a radial. The LED display and the OLED you had on the TRsDX both multiplex at about 400Hz so the camera picks up the moving of the LED activation along kind of like taking a picture of a plane prop.
Great video. I may try to visit Tuttle next month if we get the time. It doesn't look like it is that far from Black Mountain and the trails don't look too tough for my bad knee.
@@ThomasK4SWL Thanks. I am also considering the BRP, Vance and AT as well as Sandberg and Dupont. If my AX1 arrives it will help. My bad knee will require frequent rest breaks when hiking and I could quickly use those for activations. I do need to see which of those places have cell phone service.
The random easily opens more bands if you use the tuner. Adding an optional link to make it 85ft over all instead of 41ft gives even more bands if desired. The EFHW is awesome when you don't have a tuner. Either add traps or a combination of traps and links to expand resonant bands. Yes build both and experiment. With your skills it will be fun to see what you come up with. Would be great with theTruSdx
Posted video and over 170 views in an hour - amazing! Another day of 95+ here in SoCal, so I'm just working today. Nice to play your activation on the side so I can live a little today - thanks! Also - what video do you describe that pad you attach the radio to?
The thought has crossed my mind. There are only a few locations I visit regularly that have the mobile internet access to support that. I will consider this someday, though, just for fun!
Is your flight board hinged? I’m sure you cover it in a previous video, I need to go find it. While I’m on v3 of mine and love it, a hinged flight board would fit in my smaller backpack and be way more in line with my 2022 downsizing mantra. W1ND
Hi Thomas, You mentioned that your antenna wire was all but invisible when in the air. I'm curious as to what type and gauge of wire you are using. Could you provide a link? Thank you!
The type I used with this antenna is Wireman 534-Antenna Wire, 26 AWG Copper-Clad Steel Stranded Jacketed. Use gauges anywhere from about 26 - 16; the latter being speaker wire. Much of my wire is stuff I find at hamfests and thrift stores.
Gotta love CW. I had some spots from you show up on my phone today but I was at work and didn't have a way to try to hear you here in NW New Mexico.
Next time! :)

I really like the gazebo location you found! 72 Scott.

It's not far at all--maybe one hour? The trails there are very doable. There's even a gravel road you can walk if you want a smoother surface.

That paddle ?! GREAT
Really enjoy the videos, Thomas. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! 73 de N4AAJ
I’m still trying to decide whether to build my K6ARK kit in the 49:1 configuration or as a 9:1 with “random” wire paired with the ZM-2.
Buy 2 and do both - affordable experimentation. I made the 49:1 and will get the 9:1 with CP done in a few weeks.

Good stuff! I'm listening to you now on 30 meters. Question, have you ever thought about doing a live RUclips broadcast? W5HRH

Found the article in QRPer that mentions it’s origin as a sketch desk.

Of course it's only a counterpoiseless antenna until you add a counterpoise.
You worked Kc9il but logged him has kc9if. I think you were distracted with your phone while working him.
Yes, others noticed this as well and I need to correct this. Actually, my brain will often hear an L and log an F. Y and Q are similar for me. :)
Nice activation Thomas. Ed WD8JVV
