UPDATE: The books have all been reserved! I've emailed the lucky new owners, thank you all for your lovely emails I got HUNDREDS! I am crying reading them all and I'm sorry I can't reply to each one individually!
Ok, so I'm too late for your books. Fair enough, I'll take them as recommendations. In return I'd like to suggest some books for you to read, none of them are about philosophy specifically but they all have philosophy within them. If you've already read them then you should make a video about the philosophy they contain (because why not?) 1. Njals Saga (my favourite). If you decide to read this I'd recommend you listen to the Saga Thing podcast episodes about it in conjunction just to keep things ordered in your head. 2. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller (you've probably read it, so...video). 3. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway (it will take you about 1 afternoon to read and it's great). If you choose to ignore this that's fair enough but read Njals Saga anyway. It is one of the greatest works of literature ever written but is often overlooked in lists. Oh and I forgot to mention Musashi...and Beowulf...and...
I'm in awe (and envy) of people who are able to read many books per year. It takes me a really long time to read and process info so when it comes to factual/philosophy books it's only a few pages at a time..
It's all about making it a habit. Plan to read a certain amount of time each day, say 30 minutes at first. And stick to it, don't fuss about how many or little pages you did. Before you know it you'll have finished multiple books in a time you never imagined you could. And once it's a habit, you can start increasing the time you read. Besides, the more you read, the faster you'll get at it.
Leila Ahmed's work is essential but I think it needs to be contextualized. Some additional recommendations: Asma Barlas offers a critique of religious patriarchy rooted in the Qur'an. Amina Wadud analyzes notions of womanhood within the Qur'an as well. A more secular but also challenging piece of work is Saba Mahmoud's account of women in religious movements in Egypt, and her opening chapters really challenge assumptions about solidarity and feminism with respect to Muslim women and their autonomy + self-definitions of liberty. Kecia Ali and Aisha Chaudry do an excellent job documenting patriarchal thinking in the Islamic legal tradition. Khaled Abou Fadl does as well but from a religious point of view (like Barlas he critiques religious misogyny through Islam itself). So if you're interested in sociology, legal history, and religious philosphy around Islam and women then definitely give the works of these authors a read!
Another fantastic myth buster is "chaos of empire" (also known as "India conquered") by Jon Wilson. I reckon it's especially enlightening for British people
I always prefer books with highlights (notes not so much). Especially if I know something about author of said highlights. In this way I read "Picture of Dorian Gray" which was my girl friends at the time which allowed me some additional insight into her. Second that I can remember was my fathers copy of Thus spoke Zarathustra which was all more interesting seeing which parts caught his attention.
RUclips: would you like to watch a video with 13 book recommendations? Me: looking at the 56 books I still have not read and opening my notebook on the 9th page of recommended titles: Yes!
E-mail sent. It'd be great to use these to help teach my nephews and my daughter about philosophy. I have some of the "generic" texts (ie. the easy to find bookstore Nietzsche, Plato, Aristotle, etc, compendiums, but it'd be great to have a more diverse group of books to use and to have for them.) Thanks for this opportunity!
Hi, I'm wondering if you could write a list (every once and a while) of books you would recommend and a brief reason why. This would be of interest to people who like to visit the library and want to read something interesting. Could it be on a downloadable pdf because the youtube won't allow copy/paste. Thank you in advance. 😊 📚
this video is nearly 3 years old and when I went to amazon to check "What terrorists want" out (which will of course be purchased at a local book shop) the recommended still go "Antifactist Handbook" "Orientalism" and "Women and Gender in Islam" haha
Right. Even not olly's. Obv I have some respect of his opinion as a viewer.. But even just a random persons notes add to the book for me. As long as it doesnt cover the text
I'd love to have some of these books, but when I looked international delivery costs, I realized it would probably be cheaper to get them from book depository.😨😑
I'm just stoked that you mentioned What Terrorists Want again. I've been trying to remember that title since you first reviewed it but I couldn't find the video again. Can't wait to read it.
A new book I am interested in looking at is "The Human Planet: How We Created the Anthropocene" by Simon Lewis and Mark Maslin from the University College London. It comes with Ellie Mae O'Hagan's seal of approval (she also does a podcast with Owen Jones that is worth checking out). I noticed it when it was promoted on the BBC website under "A manifesto to save Planet Earth (and ourselves)" - as well as giving a view on how our energy demands have evolved over the history of human kind, it also dicusses topic's such as Universal Basic Income (with apparently evidence to show people will be more likely to protect their environment with the support of UBI). It seems like one of those books that would give a good indication if those in the know about these things are taking the right approach for the collective action needed to solve the problems climate change has brought about.
Noooo why do I see this video now Also, the secondhand section of the bookstore is where I go to find my niche esoteric philosophy books, I think that would be fine too next time you have too many books. Or you could just send them all to me ^w^
Looking for some new books to read, especially to try and get me back into philosophy. Luckily I already have Why I'm No Longer Talking To White People About Race, but the others sound very interesting.
The 10 books of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson plus the 3 book prequel? Why yes, those are 13 books I might like. Alright watching this for real now =D
Lolz. I would buy some, but I myself can't justify any more books due to the sheer amount of bloody shelf space (and because the shelves are full, spaces in my room where towers of them are stacked up) they take up! I recently brought a whole new bunch too, so I reeeally need to cull/start reading things before buying any thing else. How annoying. :/
This video was such a good idea! Whenever you read a new book, if you think its worth sharing buy another one duplicate the notes and do a sale or giveaway or whatever you'd like. I'm sure whatever you choose, your fans would appreciate more solid and useful fandom stuff from you.
I have this feeling that since I am seeing this video 2 hours after you've uploaded it that all the books are accounted for. I wish I could tell myself to buy the books, but I have enough on my plate as is. Since this kind of shows that you'll need more books in the future, and since I know your feelings on capitalism, have you ever read Naomi Klein's Shock Doctrine? It's not philosophical, but the historical context is great for people that find Capitalism abhorrent.
Damn, there are a few of those I would love to have, namely the Antifa Handbook and Chomsky's The Manufacture of Consent... but sadly, I'm an impoverished writer living la vie bohème, so perhaps I can find it in a Take-a-book, Leave-a-book...
When all of the books have been given away, it would be nice of you to simply put a comment saying that all of the books found new owners. That way you won't receive a shower of e-mails
"...that I'm probably not going to have to read anymore..." AS IF THAT'S AN EXCUSE TO GET RID OF BOOKS, YOU HEATHEN... ...OK, I'm going to watch the video now.
Paul Mason has recently done a 4 part series of short videos on Marx on the "Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung" youtube channel. Each video has a couple of thousand views. Maybe showing him some love might mean he'll do a similar series on Post-Capitalism? Edit; I personally think that anyone south of the midlands should listen to Mason's Post-Capitalism Audio Book ;D
UPDATE: The books have all been reserved! I've emailed the lucky new owners, thank you all for your lovely emails I got HUNDREDS! I am crying reading them all and I'm sorry I can't reply to each one individually!
that was annoyingly quick
I'm sorry! I underestimated how quick it would be, I thought I would need the whole month and that even then I'd have some left over!
No bother, I still have to finish reading Negative dialectics anyways

Philosophy Tube damn i wanted that copy of antifa
Your notes actually added value in my book. Told me what to pay attention to instead of me having to do it.
Labor Theory of Value proven right again!
Bruh
wow a philosophy channel recommending books and not just Peterson lectures?
Lmao this comment aged well
Simple Human Why? What happened? I haven’t been really up to date with Peterson
@@Bunndog Nah just because he did an entire video dismantling Peterson. Peterson is same old same old.

Lol, that is where i get all my books for kindle. Surprising how people dont know it exists.
In this video: Ollie presents a Craigslist ad in an effort to turn clutter into cash.

As a long time viewer, it’s nice to be reminded of books you talked about in the past
Hi, I'm wondering if you could write a list (every once and a while) of books you would recommend and a brief reason why. This would be of interest to people who like to visit the library and want to read something interesting.

annnd now my Amazon whishlist got bigger
Bookshop .org is a much more ethical site to purchase books through. They work together with local book stores run by humans not lizards

I've found that charity shops in university towns can be treasure troves of great books.
Man I would love to own some of those books and five bucks is a steal but oof, those international shipping rates tho. Hope someone else enjoys them

Why didn't I find your channels any earlier 😭
Damn my internet is down so I barely got here. I would have loved some of those books, highlights included
My day was looking really rough, and then I saw a notification from RUclips. "Please... please let this be from Olly." And BOOM! Wish granted!
What are these bo-oohks you're talking about? From you're description they sound like pdfs or something?
