Mike and Angelo S11E4 (1999) - FULL EPISODE

Flight of Fancy. Angelo's saving up for a mega-expensive dream holiday to Egypt, but when Daphne Fawkes-Bentley gets wind of this she decides to take Mickey herself to see the Great Pyramids - and leaves Katy to book the tickets for her. What could possibly go wrong? This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 26th January, 1999.
This is the first episode I've uploaded from series 11, and the sharp-eyed amongst you will have noticed something different about the eponymous Mike: he's now a she. Following on from Matt Wright (Mike the First) and with Michael Benz (Mike the Second) having left after the previous run, the writers had to come up with a third Mike to keep the title of the show at least nearly accurate - and ultimately they settled on Michaela, niece of neighbour Daphne. The young actress portraying Mike the Third is Gemma Gregory, who has since made a bit of a name for herself on Made in Chelsea. Before all that, though, she can point to roles in Great Expectations, The New Adventures of Pinocchio, Gypsy Girl, My Family, and The Crust, plus apparently quite a bit of model work - but this is where it all started for Gemma (according to IMDB, anyway). So what do we think? It's probably not fair to judge on one episode alone, especially as for large sections of this particular edition through no fault of her own her part is confined to just keeping quiet and laughing to herself, but on the whole she carries it all off well and doesn't seem out-of-place. I wonder why she only lasted the one series.
(Of course, this wasn't the first time the young star of the show had been a girl: in between Mike the First and Mike the Second we were treated to most of a series with no Mike at all, and Ellie was Angelo's partner in crime for a bit.)
Anyway, back to this one specifically, and this is an absolutely madcap farce of the highest order. (Which isn't a criticism, by the way.) But even though there isn't a great deal of nuance to the plot, with Angelo messing up and needing to redeem himself through increasingly outlandish methods and accents, I have to admit that even three-quarters of the way through, I still had absolutely no idea how they were going to dig themselves out of their hole and resolve the story. It's excellent writing when it keeps the viewer guessing. Also, listen out for a good flannel pun that's easily missed.
Needless to say, the recurring guest star playing Daphne is the amazing Elizabeth Estensen - the original T-Bag, of course - and even though we can't see her face for most of it, she's as brilliant as ever.
