It's funny, all the other streamers had a really hard time with these settings and first thing I saw most of them doing was to be heartbroken when they found another player's cap close to them. And I think that psychological warfare is a thing in tournaments, so losing that in the first round made most of them do mistakes, like not being aggressive enough, etc. You were actually surrounded by caps and not in a pristine position, still, no bitching from the position and it was war from start to end. I loved it!
Attitude is a very large part of ones game. In competition I'm not approaching it from a perspective of me deserving the win. Because that is a recipe for disappointment. I have to take the game for what it is and play my seat to the best of my ability. That way if I still lose, I can be happy that I played my best game.
@@TheKillPeteStrategy Have you read any of Ryan Holiday's books like "Ego Is The Enemy"? I read while watching your games and damn does you saying that correlate exactly with the point of the book. Love the videos Pete!
I’ve got to say I was really disappointed with round 2 of this tournament. I was eliminated, after winning the first round decisively with 3 kills - I came last on the second round because I simply had to leave as the game had been going for 2.5 hours with 0 players eliminated and no player (except for myself, desperately) making moves. I think a mode like capital conquest with these settings should be at least round 4 as it seems the only discriminator for this round was how much time can you sink into this one round
100% roll on that blue cap is lower than 515 so you can save troops by using the blitz slider and only hitting with the minimum troops required to get 100% roll.
I noticed this as well, it's so bad that this is a thing we need to consider, the game should automatically blitz with the number of troops that gets to 100% roll
It’s just tough - the expectation that you have a calculator on you and can use it to figure out how many troops you need to attack with in 60 or (let’s be real it’s more like “30 or”) fewer seconds. It would be better, I think, I’d the blitz slider automatically did it.
I want to thank you for making these vids. I don’t even play risk and you have me hooked. Your play by play analysis definitely is something else and not only am I learning as I watch but also entertained as some of the predictions unfold on the screen.
I think if white is familiar with pete's content, they made a masterclass play hitting purps offcap troops. It put him into killable range, and pete hates caps enough to take 2nd and two very happily rather than play a stalemate. A very good way to try and get themselves first in a three player game. Either that or they didn't realize purp was cardblocking. Either way an entertaining game for prog caps, always a welcome surprise!
Nice work Pete, i love how fog reduces the audience for oopsies... this is what differentiates a good player from a great player, to read whats happening inside the fog...
I think the only way to prevent a stalemate in this situation is the cards progress in bigger amounts. It seems dumb to me that the cards continue to only increase by 5 once you get into triple figure sets!
That's 1 option although I think I'd rather they just nerf caps' defense bonus which is what makes Caps-Prog stalemate when other Prog games don’t. Even Fixed Caps can stalemate for quite awhile if you're not on snowbally maps bc it’s too effective to just turtle in your Cap :-/
@@acallan1 But if you nerf the cap defence then you would just die in the early game I think (eg if it was 2X troop count to take the cap you could easily ruin someone's game with an 8 rolling 4 in the second turn). I also don't think it makes sense to nerf caps when that is the point of that game mode.
@@ItsThatVogue it is def a balancing challenge between simplicity of the mechanic & balance in the early/mid/late games. I'd be OK w/ the defense mechanic being more complicated in favor of protecting small caps w/ very diminishing returns for large caps which drive stalemates personally, although I suspect SMG might take the simple approach of just capping how many troops a capital can contain as it mostly accomplishes that goal w/o any complicated balanced blitz algorithm changes for Caps only

Man the round two has been wild. Kylted essentially got blocked in West Africa. He placed his cap there and then another player capped at South Western Europe. Kylted basically got to be a spectator, eventually he rammed his stack against the South Western Europe player and then took 4th. Meanwhile Qlwl gets the luckies cap 2 position hold on a +15 and a portal cap to boot. What made the game extra sweet was that no one really attacked him meaningfully the entire game. I would almost say that in this mode. In a 3 player stalemate, the best move is to have the most caps. If a player has most of the caps, the other two players, if they wanted to win would want to slowly take those caps, without sacrificing too many troops. It may also be a good move. To sacrifice your own troops, in order to feed a cap, to the other player. Wich may not be beneficial to the person doing it, it's not the same as giving up a bounty. It merely balances out the board, in wich the 2nd in third player aren't fighting to get second, amd of course, as you know. Players that try to hold onto multiple caps. Have to split they're troops. It might seem counter intuitive to feed a capitol to another player, but it may actually work in some situations. If you widdle a cap down to make it inticing to another player, they may lose and take out a bunch of troops. Wich would then work into your favor. Especially if the other players other caps are behind they're own troops.
I love watching people play games they love and are passionate about, you can tell he really loves the game and I don't even know how this game works but I enjoy watching nevertheless

You can actually see green hiding behind blue when taking his card at the beginning. He attacked the portal and then again into the useless bonus. If you payed attention to it you would of gotten the kill. Edit: well played!
Damn in my round 2 game, we set the new record ,so we were told, almost 9 hours, I got second with no kills (I missed the kill on 3rd place because of one stupid pathing mistake, those hours didn't do me well) I survived though cause the winner didn't want to hunt my several thousands stacks across the map for additional hours😂. I switched my main activity to series and RUclips on my laptop after 4 hours into the game. I hate these settings and will never do something like this over that time ever again🤣
Just spitballin' here. Maybe if caps game mode also included "hero" units? If you're attacking from a territory with a hero unit, you can roll an extra die. Everyone could get 1 at the start, and if you capture another hero, you could put them in the same territory and roll 2 extra die. Probably not the best idea. But I feel like this game mode needs some form of incentive to be reasonably aggressive. Or maybe just change the tournament point system for caps to 1 point per placement position and 5 per bounty (or something like that). IMO, 5th with 1 bounty should be worth more than 2nd with 0 bounties.
What keys do you press do the quick attack from one to the next to the next country. You do it quick and in 60 sec games it would be really handy if I could do that. Thank you!
Would it be beneficial to leave small stacks in places ppl can't see like 20-50 stacks, so when they try to either take you out or they are just looking around to see what's there it cost them troops or they stop poking around
Why is it good to have a portal cap? I am not too experienced with portals, but wouldn't it be more likely for people to attack your cap if it is on a portal and not somewhere else that is more closely guarded?
55:00 black was there to kill. it would have hurt your cap but three cards and a bounty wouldn't have been bad either. Black stopped taking cards on purpose before he was killed because he was the fish. He skipped twice and then finally took a card.after he took that card he was 💀. Either by you, blue, or purple.
I don't really know how this round was 9 hours for some groups. As soon as my cap hit 1000 troops, I just started slamming everything I got per turn and from trades into a cap trying to 2v1. I'd much rather progress the game than wait for someone else to dc or suicide. edit on just getting to the point where you said its unempathetic to say it's the players fault that these games stalemate: I'd have to agree that the guys with one cap each are not benefitting from trying to start slamming troops into a cap, but had white started doing that on one of you, the game would've absolutely progressed even if he lost the bounty for it.
Found your channel watch vampire chicken who got me interested in risk and mentioned yeah. I'm more into chess and got to say I find it funny how you guys complain about a 2 hr game when I've played chess games triple the length or weekend tournament of multiple 2 3 hr games. You got to find your enjoyment in the thinking and planning along with the it's a tournament and you play it the position to death as they just might slip I totally respect that play at the end.
I think the difference between a long chess game and a risk stalemate is that you're still actively thinking where for most of a longer caps game it's just take a card and pass.
Not completely true I have plenty of games of chess where I'm up a piece, winning but my opponent plays to there outs that don't really exist so you slowly convert a easy win over an hour. But, I do think it's crazy you don't have a max time clock for these games even if it's a 3-4 hour clock just so everyone can plain better. I also don't see why a stalemate rule could be created somehow to help end games where everyone just card and pass like 3-5 times in a row or something.
Pete: "This is blue's game to lose."
Blue: *Completely botches his position*
Agree but pete's move was hella risky.

We tried hero units once on the table top. It was OP agressively.
Watching this in 2024 I can’t believe portals are already over a year old feels like they were added yesterday
Also I miss the old risk draft sound
Wow what a round i enjoyed this intense match for full 2 hours lol
Maybe if bounties worth more points and positions less in this game mode, people would make more moves and avoid this situation
I have an idea to improve these settings : do not allow capitals to be on fixed portals.
These long ones are tough to watch never mind playing, keep the pain train going Pete. Good game, good luck.
🙏🙏🙏
There was a point black skipped for multiple turns in a row that Pete didn't notice.
What keys do you press do the quick attack from one to the next to the next country. You do it quick and in 60 sec games it would be really handy if I could do that. Thank you!

Great stuff from the Peteman after one of the worst cap rolls I’ve seen. A bit of luck after that but good play got you the result.
Would it be beneficial to leave small stacks in places ppl can't see like 20-50 stacks, so when they try to either take you out or they are just looking around to see what's there it cost them troops or they stop poking around
I think off cap troops tend to get hit
Good job as always Pete
Thanks Dubes!
You look really nervous before starting the game, then back into your stable self. Good luck in the tournament!
Yeah I have to flip the switch when I'm competing. Can't let the nerves get the best of us.
14:20 and the Western Roman Empire is strong but greedy, haha!
So greedy
Why is it good to have a portal cap? I am not too experienced with portals, but wouldn't it be more likely for people to attack your cap if it is on a portal and not somewhere else that is more closely guarded?
coulda tried adding a few troops to that territory you needed opened and slow rolling white. maybe then he woulda hit that territory
Yeah that's a good move.
After 3 hours I decided to hell with my game. I checked back later in our group. It was an 8 hour game
Black went from 3 portals to 0 so fast
Man! Capping on any of those would have been way better
Risk is becoming very 🔥
55:00 black was there to kill. it would have hurt your cap but three cards and a bounty wouldn't have been bad either.
Black stopped taking cards on purpose before he was killed because he was the fish. He skipped twice and then finally took a card.after he took that card he was 💀. Either by you, blue, or purple.
Was it bc blue had more cards that you killed him first? Purple looked like a good kill there.
34:57 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yikes 🤣
What if there was a maximum amount of troops you could put on a cap. Like 500 or so?
Gotta respect the 69 card block 😂🤣
It almost worked too!
Oh wow lucky break. 59:51
Pete, how do you feel about these settings and their ability to stalemate?
Watch any of his caps videos and you'll have a lengthy explanation on why they suck.
Currently 40 minutes into a 2 hour video and hear "...upside there is there might not be a stalemate." Poor past Pete doesn't know what's coming.
2 hrs is good
Some of the games this round went over 11 hrs
Any money involved in these tournaments ? May be inclined to become a grand master if so
I put 1500$ in prize money up for my tounrmanent this season.
Great game.
🙏
