    History of Swayambhunath Temple
    Facts of Swayambhunath Temple
Swayambhunath stupa is a shiny white temple at the top of a hill in the north-west of the Kathmandu Valley. Swayambhunath is also considered a sacred religious Buddhist site in Nepal.
    Swayambhu means "Self- Existent one".
Legend has it that Swayambhu was born from the seeds of a lotus flower, which was spread in Naagdaha Lake by The Bipasvi Buddha, also known as the first Buddha.
There are four stars in the swayambhu stupa, Lochani, Marnaki, Pandura and Aryatara. There is a 315- steps ladder at the entrance of Swayambhu Chaitya. Near the Swayambhu Chaitya, there are idols of Sneha, elephant, peacock, horse, and eagle. It refers to the five meditative Buddha's arms. Right in front of the stupa is a big Bajra, which is believed to have been built by King Pratap Malla. When it comes to describing The Swayambhunath Stupa, the white gumba represents the whole world and it is believed that the eyes built around the stupa are watching the world and protecting humanity. The question mark sign between the two eyes is conveying the message of unity.
Swayambhu is also called Monkey Temple because the gods came into existence "Manjushree" spent time on the hill where the temples were established. Manjushree should have cut his hair short, but instead he let it grow long and his head was full of lice. These lice then turned into monkeys. There are many monkeys living at Swayambhunath Stupa. As Swayambhunath stupa is home to many monkeys, it is also called Monkey Temple.
Thus, the 2000-year-old Swayambhu Chaitya is a very sacred place for all devotees.

Please make a correction to your title, it is not a monkey temple ok. It is Maha chaitya, a Faith of Buddhists. Of course, few monkeys live in a jungle but it doesn't mean that it is a monkey temple Haa?
