- If you love the Washington Commanders (formerly the Washington Football Team, Washington Redskins, Boston Redskins and originally the Boston Braves) and their colorful history, then you're going to love this terrific two-minute video by NFL Films which chronicles the uniform color history of the Commanders uniform from their first season in 1932 in Boston to roughly 2013. Narrated by Scott Graham, one of the great voices of NFL Films, this video features three uniform history experts: Joe Horrigan who is VP Communications and Exhibits at the Pro Football Hall of Fame where he has worked for more than 35 years; Michael MacCambridge, author of "America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation" and many other books as well as editor of the massive "ESPN College Football Encyclopedia"; and Scott Sillcox, sports uniform historian.
If you are a huge Commanders fan, you might be interested to know that the 16 pieces of original artwork used to create the Commanders’ uniform history poster -- the actual hand-painted watercolor paintings -- are available for sale at Heritage Sports Art www.HeritageSportsArt.com . When you watch this NFL Films video, you will see 5 of the 16 actual painted uniforms -- and you can actually own that original artwork! Спорт
I know the yellow helmet only lasted two years, but it's commonly used as their throwback helmet, and I'm surprised it wasn't referenced

Thanks for the comment - the interesting thing about this little project was we were asked to discuss the team colours, but not the team history or logos. It actually made it quite hard and occassionaly we'd veer off topic and mention logos, but for the most part we talked about the team's colors vs the uniform history.
Thanks!
Scott
Robert Cherkauer I heard the yellow helmet was designed by the late coach Vince Lombardi to be almost similar to the Green Bay G logo on their helmets during the Packer era.
Scott Sillcox even though you were talking about colors, what do you think of the name and logo
Reed R
I'm not challenging your comment. I certainly remember the yellow helmets('70 & '71I believe?), but I have not seen them since.
@@ungartothemax20166 OMG is that all you have to talk about is a name and logo there is more important things in this world than a name and a logo
This aged well
I really like the burgundy helmet with the gold arrow. I don't know why the team owners got rid of them.
Vince Lombardi brought in the yellow helmet that was only worn for 2 seasons
How about any up date video ???
Hi WW -- Thanks for the note and I agree that it would be great to update, but there's no budget. So these videos are at least a snapshot in time and at some future date we'll see if we can figure out how to do a cost effective update across the board. Thanks - Scott
Actually the team's pants have gone through several changes.
Here on 2.2.22
Redskins should go back to their burgundy trousers and wear white at home. they won all their 3 superbowls in that uniform.
we did
Member we did
I just realized that lol
HTTR!
How'd the name change and the video is 7yrs
Hi Jonathan - thanks for the note. Because the franchise changed their name to the Washington Commanders from the "Washington Football Team" and before that the "Washington Redskins", I felt I needed to follow suit. I wish I could easily update the videos themselves, but that would be a huge undertaking and expense. Maybe the good people at Tide will consider getting NFL Films to do an updated version in the next couple years. Many thanks again for your note - Scott
It's definitely cool it just looked like How the Simpsons predicted things
Keep the name Washington Football Team, it basically tells the NFL Elite, that you shame me into taking The Redskins name away, so I am going to pick a strange name to give you the middle finger.
Now they’re Washington commanders
Thanks for the note Arturo - these fun little videos were created in 2012 and capture a moment in time. It would cost a ton of money to update them, so instead we're leaving them exactly as they were in 2012. Maybe one day soon we'll create a whole new set! Thanks - Scott
I still wish they'd switch to the white over burgundy look for all games. At least for the road games. The white over gold look is just yuck. Looks like someone squirted mustard and ketchup on them. Hail to the Redskins!
well they did know, not sure if its true, but I heard that it takes three years to get a uniform change, maybe that's the whole uniform, and not just pants
Dan Hanna same thing basically with steelers, but packers road looks pretty good though
Can Dan Snyder mess this up, like he has everything else?
it will change soon
Mike Youngblood I hope so
Mike Youngblood yeah sure has
I hope so
Mike Youngblood
You & ungerhead call me when it does.
Well Washington Football Team was not what I had in mind.
I wish the Redskins would go back to wearing the WHITE jerseys with the BURGANDY pants for their home colors, but at least they ARE NOT wearing those HORRIBLE gold pants anymore, but I DO wish they would wear white jerseys with the burgundy pants for their home games though
RED SKIN BURGUNDY
I think for the new name for Washington should be Thunderbirds. It honors both Air Force and the Native American culture.
(Update) they could also call themselves the Washington Hogs
burgundy and gold there not just colors they're racism.
Mitchell Cleveland W
Mitchell Cleveland and the name and logo must be changed
Who let a White man in here
L
🤣🤣🤣
Now it’s the Washington Football Team 😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂
Hi Goldeneve - Thanks for the note. I have been waiting for the team to announce their new name before changing all my references to their old team name. It's a lot of work changing the team name and I'd prefer to make the changes once and not twice. But if they seem to be sticking with the Washington Football Team for this season, I will likely change it now and then change it again later. Thanks again for the note - Scott
Marshall was also the Biggest racist in NFL History
Mike Youngblood W for knowing that. The Skins were also the last team to integrate.
The only way they integrated was that then Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy who served when his brother was President, forced Marshall's hand if he wanted to play at then new DC Stadium and he traded for Bobby Mitchell. The facility was later renamed after RFK after he was assassinated in 1968.
@@infinitetundra what do you mean by: "The Skins were also the last team to integrate"?
UngarToTheMax
He means the the Skins were the very last all-white NFL team
('63 or '64?... somewhere in there).
They’re now the Washington Football Team as the old racist logo has been retired
LMFAO and you are One of the people that made it get retired you are not a native American you don’t need to be calling it racist when you ain’t even a Native American this is the exact reason why our name is retired Native Americans loved our name there was a 5% out of 100% that didn’t like it and all the other people that didn’t like it was just white and black liberals and what they would do was white and black liberals would protest about the name and then whenever they would interview somebody on a new station etc. they would interview one of the 5% of the Native Americans that were offended by it to make it look like a bunch of people were offended by it
They are not just colors, they are racism
Yep and the 49ers name should be gone too, shamefull that they honor those cunts. The 49ers slaughtered 120,000 native Americans during the gold rush by 1870, it was the worst slaughter in United States history.
Says someone who not even native american
