This went on for about a week til I could get ahold of my bank in Oregon and find out why my card was frozen. No one gave me a dime.

I am French-American, just a little heads up when you try to get people to do an interview with you. 1. Say hello before anything else, even if you say excusez-moi this is considered bad manner and very impolite, 2. be formal Say something to the effect of "Bonjour Madame, ça vous dérangerai de parler avec moi deux minutes s'il vous plait" .
Btw the French don't hate Americans, the media shits on and makes a caricature of the states. They don't like America (for many reasons) but if you're chill and show you have culture, you'll be fine. Don't say you're American, say you're a new yorker or you're californian. The associations will be a lot more favorable than just saying you're American.
