It's a makeup sponge, you can get them in most drug stores.

H E L P ... I'm looking on youtube to find out if I can draw in great details with graphite on professional wood panels that have a white surface? I do inexpensive graphite portraits on good quality paper, but many of my customers do not have their drawings professionally framed but do it themselves. That bothers me because I want my work to be archival. The questions are: Can I do a photo realism style with lots of flesh detailed shading but on professional white wood panels instead of high quality drawing paper? Will the graphite adhere to the wood surface and thus become archival? If so, what would be the best way to seal the drawing to insure it might not flake off in the future? H E L P I assume that as you said, your method here might smear my photo-realism drawing. So maybe there's a safe spray that would work on graphite over wood?

I think this method of sealing my panel would smear graphite. I only use it for a very light line drawing to prepare for a painting. I know SILVERPOINT or METAILPOINT drawing is done on a smooth gesso (white painted) wooden panel, try looking up those techniques.

Claybord is your friend. The graphite will look great on it and you can do mixed media if you want. I used Liquitex acrylic spray gloss varnish to seal the bord when I'm done and it locks down graphite (it's permanent, so do it when you're really, really done.) I have not yet tried just using a fixative on it as my experiments have been aimed towards doing a detailed, done drawing and then tinting it with acrylic gouache.
