    Armstrong wasn't terrified in the scene you saw him in, he was traumatized because they were using his alchemy to trap Ishvalan's to be shot against the walls he made

    The anime cut down the atrocities and the intricacies of the civil war SIGNIFICANTLY. in the manga, this one episode is an entire volume. It goes in depth, it's so rich and intricate. It drives home the horrors of war

    You're right that you'd seen the Iron Blood Alchemist before. he's the one that gets killed in Scar's first appearance. He traps him in a metal box, not expecting him to be able to escape, only to be surprised by his destruction.

    This episode portrays war well, for the side who won and the side who lost. But really, no moral person on the side of Amestris feels they won anything. Particularly Riza because she knows that she can't hide behind the "just following orders" justification. She knows that one day Amestris is going to have to pay for what they did to Ishval, because a crime of that magnitude can't just be ignored. And she's accepted that she's going to be one of the ones paying.
    Also, it makes perfect sense why Bradley does not believe in waiting for a so-called God for salvation. Where was "God" when the state was brainwashing him and those other little boys into being human weapons? 11 test subjects before him died to the stone, but his desire to live defeated the other wrathful souls until only he was left. From Bradley's POV, if your instinct is to rely on something unseen and unprovable, then your desire to continue living is weak.

    • @alreadyblack3341
      @alreadyblack3341 2 месяца назад

      But Amestris was co-opted. This'd be more like trying Manchuria for crimes the Japanese committed using local manpower. If there wasn't a literal god wannabe controlling things from behind the scenes, you may have had a point. But as it stands to reason, the utter dominating control of inhuman beings doesn't lead credence to the fact that Amestris is at fault here. Especially considering what we already know, Amestris only took to expanding and committing mass military atrocities AFTER Bradley came into power. Even more so, Envy is the literal cause of all the Ishvalan riots in the beginning of the War of Extermination. If I wanted to go even further, technically Amestris is a Xerxian puppet state that's been turned into a march. "Following orders justification" when you're only options are pretty much, die on the front lines, look into something too deeply and get left behind or getting disappeared, and finally my personal favorite getting turned into a philosopher's stone.

      @@alreadyblack3341 Amestris was doing this before Beadley was born. Edward may have said that things only turn toward the militaristic once Bradley came into power, but that is factually untrue. Olivier quickly mentioned that the country started off incredibly small and kept absorbing neighbors into itself until it formed the circle that it is right now. And Falman listed over half a dozen major wars, aside from Ishval.

      He is quite the intelligent man-child. Loves a good conversation, but if you don't give him one, it's boring. And he loves a good symphony to get attention. One of my fave episodes. If you're gunna write genocide, don't just gloss over it as a convenient plot device. Go over the horror, of it and truly condemn it. I think this ep gives us empathy for Ishvalens and a critical look at our protagonist characters in the military too, but their regretful and responsible perspective justifies rooting for them. Call me crazy but upon rewatching I hate Kimblee less than I did the first time. He actually makes some good points. He isn’t really any worse or more guilty than the other soldiers like Hawkeye or Mustang, just because he didn’t pretend to feel bad about what he was doing like they did.

    • @SnowyWolborg
      @SnowyWolborg 5 месяцев назад +7

      You also have to at least on some level respect how realistic Kimblee was about the situation. Let's just be honest, we already know for a fact that Amestris is pretty much always in military conflicts with each one of their neighbors at every direction. Edward himself said things only started getting worse when Bradley came into power.
      So, anybody who goes into the military expecting anything less than to be sent into combat, killing other human beings who bleed the exact same blood as you, is just simply naive. Mustang, Hawkeye, Armstrong, and Hughes had these young, lofty ideals about how the military existed to protect people, only to find out the harsh reality that they were simply being turned into massacre weapons.

    • @Cyrinil142
      @Cyrinil142 5 месяцев назад +7

      It was cut from the show but, as I recall, at one point during the extermination, Kimblee caught Armstrong letting some Ishvalans escape. Kimblee killed them all, of course, but then he *didn't* report Armstrong because he respected that at least Armstrong was risking himself to do something he believed in. Kimblee's killing people because he wants to. Armstrong was protecting people because he wants to. The people who were committing genocide but *didn't* want to; Kimblee has no patience for them.
      Also "gotta overthrow the government because I'm the only one who will put *me* on trial for war crimes" is a pretty baller motivation.

    • @SnowyWolborg
      @SnowyWolborg 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@Cyrinil142 Exactly. One has to remember that despite Mustang's ambitions, he does not _always_ hold true to his own values. Which is exactly why Master Hawkeye did not want to teach him flame alchemy in the first place. He knew that Roy was the kind of person that could be misled with power. If Roy actually does manage to obtain the office of fuhrer, holding himself accountable for his actions during the civil war is the only way he can unquestionably prove to the citizenry that he's going to walk the walk.
