The basic way to do it is acquire the patched game and then just pick a server, make an account, and play. Some servers, such as Rain Server or Mezolounge have their own specific client with whatever sort of custom content the server has in it. I suggest checking out the Rain discord server here discord.com/invite/rainserver if you specifically want to play on Rain, which is the server I play on. Odds are you will be able to find people much more helpful than me there.
