Such a shame that such a fine, internationally recognized opera house orchestra could not (or would not), for whatever reason, source the right instrument for the solo piccolo part. A major constituent of the aria's character is immediately changed by not having the low D flat and C that Britten writes for on that instrument, albeit unorthodox.
