  • Al Davis, and his wife, Maisie, were friends of Randy’s his whole life. He tells of just a few of the escapades of Al’s, as an outfitter, guide, hunter. Despite many heart attacks in the field, he kept on keeping on. It is said that the only way he knew to come out of the mountains was in the dark.

Randy, your recall of names is outstanding. I'm about your age, and I'm lucky to remember my own.😆

Sometimes those ole mountain horses have more sense than humans.
I had a sorel gelding, Buddy, that was fairly mountain savy. I was hunting elk on the north slope of the Poudre River in northern Colorado once with him. The fog rolled in fairly thick one afternoon and I got turned around in an area that I was quite familiar with. I was certain I was headed toward camp and this gelding was giving me a big fight. He kept wanting to go perpendicular to where I wanted to go. After about 3 hours, I figured out that I was lost. I hoped that my horse knew where camp was and I just pitched him the reins. He took me back to camp in under an hour.
Another time I had this same gelding trying to find a horse somebody lost in northern Colorado. We knew the location of where the horse had run off from camp but not much else. So Buddy and I headed out in the same direction. I caught a glimps of the lost horse from about a mile away and hit a trot, heading directly at the spot I saw the horse. Ole Buddy kept wanting to take a trail that I thought was wrong. I finally realized that he might know a thing or two and gave him his head. If we had went on the trail that I wanted, we would have had to go around a 150 foot drop-off. The trail Buddy took was a little longer but was fairly easy going.
I was back at my trailer before dark with the lost horse in tow. After we caught the horse I told Buddy to head for the trailer and he took me on a path that was the best possible route.
I wish I had 5 more just like him...

Wonderful record of the culture, values, and people of western North America.
I have my own precious memories of the “old timers” I to get a tear in my eye when I think of them.

I worked up there in 1970 & 1971 and remember a lot of those names. I was only there a short time, but what a great time it was! Crossed Sabres was a beautiful lodge! I worked two summers and one hunting season at Elephant Head.

There's a good old story! Al was a tough one, that's for sure ! I just saw that another man got mauled but escaped with his life by a grizzly bear in the grand tetons. I still find it hard to believe that SOME folks go into grizzly country without a dam big pistol for self defense. The game department has shut down a whole mountain since. The fellow is extremely fortunate to have lived, and that's all that I have to say about that.
God bless you and yours, Mr
    Randy.
