He will probably do a good video on how but it might be a little while so here is how I do it so that way you can do it the same way at the beginning of next year. This might be a little long. but it will be worth it. this will be a how to for companion pass for 2023 to end of 2024. I will sign up for the Southwest Business credit card usually around November 1st. I sign up for the business card first cause it doesnt count against your 5/24 and it usually has a higher spend limit to reach your bonus. (Note: that if the bonus isnt 100k I would wait a month or so to see if it rises.) The reason I go with November 1st is so I can take my time to get to the spend limit for the bonus and it helps spread out applying for the regular southwest card. The number one thing to know is you dont want to meet your spend limit for the bonus until after Jan 1st!!!!!! So if the reward is 100k points for spending $5k in 3 months then you would sign up on Nov 1st and go over the $5k on like Jan 5-10 just to be safe. This way the bonus points dont hit till after Jan 1st. Thats how I do the Business card part. Now you will have 100k points out of the 125k-135k that you need. For the rest of the points I honestly just see if I have any purchases for my side business that will get me there in the first couple of months. That way I dont have to always sign up for another card. But if I do need to sign up for another card cause I know I have a flight booked for early Feb or March (cause this is the best time to get out of the cold and go south) then I would sign up for one of their normal Southwest Cards. I would do this around December 1st (atleast 30 days after the business card). Then again I would wait until after Jan 1st to hit the bonus spend limit. So I would track my spending on those cards to get them with in about $500 of the the spend limit and then not use them again until around Jan 5th and I would just buy some gift cards totaling the amount left I needed to hit the bonus points. Now I have anywhere from 150k-180k Southwest points which will trigger your companion pass right away. Now you have companion pass for the longest time possible. Since companion pass is for that year and the following year. Now for the fun part. If you are married you can do this for them after the two years that you do it so you guys will always have companion pass. So if you do it this time and have companion pass for 2023 to the end of 2024 then you would sign your wife up for a business card on Nov 1st 2024 and a regular card on Dec 1st 2024 and hit the spend limit on her cards for those on Jan 5th then she would have the companion pass for two years and you can cancel your two cards (transfer your limits if you can to another card) then you would have a two year break and then you just do it all over again in 2027-2028. Just make sure that you are able to pay off your cards each month and not carry a balance to pay interest on. Hope that makes sense for as long as it is. He will probably get something out before the end of the year but I just wanted you to know so you can maximize the deal for the longest period of time. Have a good one!

Do you have a video on the southwest credit card I received and offer to get the CC and get 30K point and a companion pass after I spend $4K. That no problem but I am not sure how SW really works. Does the companion always have to be the same person?

Man, you're on top of things, Max! So, would you get a 20k points boost if you have both the biz and personal Southwest cards? And I heard those boost points aren't redeemable for flights, is that right?

Doesn’t look like it. Per the terms, only one 10,000 point boost no matter how many southwest cards are associated with the rapid rewards account. That would be great though.

Per terms you only get one 10k bonus towards companion pass qualification and the points aren’t redeemable for flights

I have a question! So I signed up for personal card this month June 2023 for 60k and 30% off flight promotion. If I don't earn 135k total this year, do I have to start over in earning 135k again, not the remaining 75k, for 2024 in order to get companion pass? Do I lose my points that I earned so far in 2023?

It’s disappointing that the airlines are ‘bonusing’ and placating to non-business travelers and co-branded credit card holders. They should have a way to identify those that are getting points through flying and provide a better opportunity for achieving companion. A bonus would be changing the way they count flights to include each segment of a one-way flight. Yes, you can play a game and book each individual segment, but they don’t allow you to link those flights in case you are carrying a golf bag. People are surprised how many of us business travelers are loyal to Southwest.
The sad part of business travel today is the number of businesses requiring their employees to use a travel booking site. Southwest flights were considerably more expensive than Delta, AA and United from February - August. You can blow through your travel budget real quick if you maintained that blind loyalty. Sometimes that books to a company card, not personal. We have received the short end of the stick this year for sure, and this announcement exacerbates the overall sentiment among business travelers. This is not a good change for me personally. I’m sure I’m not the only one that is of the same opinion.

Great post Max and good info as always. you helped me earn the Companion pass last year (good through 2023). Loving it!
How can I earn this again? Can I cancel and apply for the same cards?

You are eligible for a new bonus on personal and business SW cards 24 months after you received the last bonus. You would need to cancel your card before applying for a new one.

Great video Max! So question, I’m preparing to apply for a SW credit card to get companion pass. Can I apply for both a business and personal cards at the same time that way I can hit the bonuses on both and receive companion pass that way? Or should I wait and do them a few months apart?

We already get 9000 points a year for our SW credit card, so do we now get 19000 or just an additional 1000 and they raise the minimum to 135000?

The 10k points you get are only qualifying companion pass points. You don’t get to spend those points on flights they only help you towards companion pass status
