Taking a detailed look back at one of the best films ever made, with one of the best endings ever, Charlie Chaplins masterpiece, City Lights!
City Lights is a 1931 American silent romantic comedy-drama film written, produced, directed by, and starring Charlie Chaplin. The story follows the misadventures of Chaplin's Tramp as he falls in love with a blind girl (Virginia Cherrill) and develops a turbulent friendship with an alcoholic millionaire (Harry Myers).

great video! one of my favourite aspects of the iconic ending is the ambiguity of it. The tramp is smiling, but the music has an tragic tone. They are reunited but to me the implication is that they won't be together, though I like that's it's really up to the viewer to decide. It encapsulates the running theme of Chaplin's work; that the line between happiness and sadness is gossamer thin at times.
One of my favourite quotes from Chaplin, in an interview in 1921; "I like tragedy; it is beautiful. The only comedy that's worthwhile is when it has beauty. That's all there is in life; beauty, you find that and you have found everything. Only it is hard to find."

The most amazing movie I have ever seen and can see a million times. “Can you see now, yes I can see now..” Exposes the fake life of the riches, reinstates the love for humanity above all…

Fine analysis of this great film. I would put his first talkie The Great Dictator on a par with City Lights.

I saw this film for the first time forty years ago. I actually choked up at the end.
Just watched it today, and yep, same response. The plain emotion on their faces? If that doesn't touch you HARD in the feels you may honestly be a sociopath.

I must admit I was ambivalent about watching this as not seen any chaplin stuff for years, but found it really rewarding and your incisive commentary made me wish I hadn't got rid of the complete chaplin dvd box set (making room).
Chaplin was a phenomenal talent and his obsessive control were legendary and his multiple takes and volatile temper also legendary.
    A brilliant review. Great stuff

Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. Chaplin really is timeless, although he was a bit of a nightmare on set it did produce one of the most rewarding movies ever lol

@@JimTheMovieGeek I have mixed feelings about him he truly was a genius (an overused word) but his work and his love of young young women in some respects overshadow each other.
But being a genius has its price.
At least he not prince Andrew who achieved nothing but has same tastes

This was an amazing watch, it's one of my favorite romatic comedies. And such a classic. My favorite Chaplin is Modern Times by the way.
