I think people don't understand how versatile this show is to balance the tones so perfectly. Handling the external scenes with Darcy and Woo and Rambeau all looking inside this crazy "sitcom reality" is a hard enough suspension-of-disbelief. But then we also go INTO the sitcom world where we have plots and lines with hidden meanings, subliminal clues that something else is going on, and the complete change of mise-en-scène each week, perfectly matching the sitcoms of the era.... The costumes and sets, the practical effects, the camera angles and color grading, the types of humour and the way dialogue is written, the topical themes and structure of the writing, all have to change every episode, plus they had to introduce the outside world which is set in the MC-freaking-U which has to be consistent to what we've seen in the movies... but ON TOP OF ALL THAT what impresses me is the delivery Elisabeth and Paul give. Each episode they have to reorient their characters to a new stage and a new format and a new era... while staying consistent as Wanda and Vision. Paul goes from the formal dry humour of the 50's working man, to the slapstick in episode 2, to New Panicked Dad, the a more relaxed family man... while also maintaining that he is a Synthezoid hiding his true identity and starting to become aware of something being wrong. Elisabeth goes from the perfect newly married housewife of the 50's running into problems hosting dinner parties and trying to fit in at charity events to a stay-at-home mom of the 80's who loves her children and teaches them about life as they get into shenanigans... but she has to also play these subliminal moments of shock and confusion, anger, brokenness, and defensiveness or terrifying rage when she's tested... and at any moment they have to slip into it. They have to act differently each episode while still being the same character and they have to be able to switch modes at any moment and I am AMAZED how well it translates.
I think your description encapsulates why they had to start the series with 2 completely straight sitcoms, with just the slightest hint of sinister. Because one basic tenant of the old sitcom genre is that changes happen every week that are usually unexplained and that time in not linear one week Lucy is living like a pioneer and baking bread and the next week she's working on clay sculpture and pregnant... They couldn't just do one episode and then introduce sword, they had to do a second black & white episode to cement this meta-genre-narrative where the unexplained changes are a part of the story, as much as any old sitcom. And then when they did introduce sword they had to go back to the last thing to happen in the mcu and then have half an episode where the characters do nothing but engage with the sitcom as though it were a little more than an unexplained tv show.

@Emely Galindo I read somewhere that Pietro is dead-dead and even Wanda can’t “bring him back”. Darcy said she’s recasted him, which means he’s different from the AOU Pietro in their world, so he’s probably from the X-Men world or a multiverse. Which would make sense because Spider Man 3 is already exploring the Multiverse thing.

Seriously...this can explain how the X-Men become a part of the MCU. Wanda's magic is starting to merge the timelines, meaning the Fox Marvel movies will become part of the Disney timeline, especially now that Disney owns them. This is how they could bring back Hugh as Wolverine...even have Deadpool become a part of the MCU. Seriously...Deadpool 2 was predicting this when Wade started messing with the timelines.

I gotta admit my favorite part of the episode so far was Wanda and Vision fighting. It felt almost normal to see them finally fight. A normal couple has their arguments, but ever since the series started they've been so head over heels for each other that it didn't feel real. And we got to see them talk to each other too, attempting working out their problems through communication.

But every relationship, even strange ones, need communication for it to work. Wanda might have been lying to him so we don't know if she was practicing good communication or not BUT it's a start. :)

I was extremely shook when I saw Pietro. Also Billy and Tommy are so cuteeee they're like little angels.
And that fight scene between Wanda and Vision tho- episode 5 was scary, freaky, exciting, nerve wracking and suspenseful all at once

All of us latchkey kids from the 80’s have traumatic memories from when dad would come home angry and fly up in the air, and mom’s eyes would glow red and she’d fly up to meet him. It was a different time, before the internet, and this show captures it perfectly.

The reason there are no kids in Westview is because she can’t control them. When the twins were in their cribs crying, Wanda said”Why won’t you do What I say?” something like that. She doesn’t even have control over aging. Agnes Knows that and I am pretty sure she killed Sparky to force Wanda to bring it back because her twins would ask. Also pretty sure Ralph is Mephisto or someone evil

I agree. I think it's because, adults, unlike little children, have experienced trauma similar to Wanda's. Think about it. Wanda created this pocket reality because she wanted Vision back, she was grieving over him. Monica says she felt like she was drowning, she felt grief, when she was in the Hex. Adult also experience trauma and sorrow, unlike little kids who are pure and unburdened. Which is why Wanda can't control the kids. But I wonder....where the hell are they now?

Anyways, I'm SO excited for the Halloween episode. Especially the scene where Vision goes above the town and has that unsettling conversation with Agnes

New theory: Agnes IS Mephisto. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer genderbent Mar-Vell in Captain Marvel; who's to say she didn't do the same for Mephisto? Also, notice how Norm doesn't say "Wanda" when Vision wakes him up from the trance. He says "her". So could this mean that the whole "Wanda controlling everyone" thing is a red herring? More evidence: every time the twins aged up, she was there. And I'm willing to bet she killed that dog just to get Wanda to use her powers.

@@AlexG-jk8tc That’s what I’m thinking. If it really is Pietro, how did he get through the barrier after Wanda strengthen it and without Sword noticing? It’s more likely that he was already in there as someone else.
Also, when Agnes hears Wanda might be able to raise the dead, she reacts with curiosity rather than confusion. Almost like she's interested in seeing how far this can go. Everyone else has seemed frightened when Wanda's control over them weakened. Agnes was just totally casual about the whole thing being fake, and the one time she's seemed agitated was when Monica was intruding in the town. I don't know if she's manipulating events, but it's very suspicious.

okay like... my theory is that evan peters’ quicksilver is a red herring. like wanda seems like she barely believes he’s pietro herself. i think he’s someone dressed as an alternate version of quicksilver, whether he’s mephisto or whoever else is behind this.

I think he’s just an alternate version of Pietro who got pulled into this by Wanda. She didn’t fully realize it (she snatched an alternate version of her brother without knowing what he looked like), hence the lack of recognition
He’s from an alternate universe I’m pretty sure. Cause I’m pretty sure Wanda’s gonna be the one to introduce the X-Men in the MCU or the stories just different and they just re-casted Aaron but I’m pretty sure it’s both.

The comedy aspect of the show is SOOO underrated. I think the initial viewing is more for the plot, but the second viewing is more for the comedy.

Protagonists from Avengers movies, whose story was developed in Captain America 3, with a supporting character from Thor, one from Captain Marvel, and one from Ant-Man... and it all feels as naturally cohesive as it should be. That's what I love about the MCU.

It's interesting how Wanda's solution is to magic them to sleep, while vision thinks they just need more time.
It shows their underlying ideologies. Wanda, experiencing grief, thinks "I can take control" Vision on the other hand is logical ordered and methodical, when he makes a mistake in avengers two he accepts that he might need to be decommissioned, a complete opposite to Wanda.
The best line I've heard so far on this show is, "Who's the popsicle?"
